Chapter 24 Apologies & Accidental Feelings
Arielle did not reply immediately.
She stared at the message for a full thirty seconds.
Lucian: We need to talk. I misunderstood everything.
She flipped the phone over.
Then flipped it back.
Then locked it.
Then unlocked it again.
Of course you misunderstood. You misunderstand professionally.
Outside her room, someone laughed loudly. The crew was already moving. The village woke up earlier than dignity allowed.
Her phone buzzed again.
Lucian: It’s important.
She exhaled.
Typed.
Deleted.
Typed again.
Arielle: We are both busy. Say it here.
She placed the phone down like it might explode.
Elsewhere: Lucian Cross, Formerly Confident Man
Lucian had not slept.
He sat in his office with his jacket still on from the night before. His tablet lay open on the desk, paused on a clip of Arielle laughing while covered in mud.
He had watched it four times.
Not because it was dramatic.
Because she looked… unguarded.
He hadn’t seen that version of her in years.
Maybe ever.
His phone vibrated.
She responded.
He straightened immediately.
He typed slowly this time.
No ego.
No pride.
Lucian: I accused you of things that weren’t true.
He stared at the screen.
Deleted it.
Typed again.
Lucian: I should have trusted you.
He sent it before he could overthink.
Back in the Village
Arielle read the message while walking toward the communal kitchen.
She paused.
Not because it shocked her.
But because it was simple.
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just that.
Behind her, someone bumped lightly into her shoulder.
“Oh! Sorry!”
Lin Yue.
Of course.
Arielle steadied her. “It’s fine.”
Lin Yue’s fingers lingered a second longer than necessary before pulling away.
“You woke up early,” Lin Yue said softly.
“So did you.”
Lin Yue smiled. “I couldn’t sleep.”
Arielle studied her face.
There were faint shadows under her eyes.
“You’re thinking too much,” Arielle said gently.
Lin Yue blinked.
“…Am I?”
“Yes.” Arielle reached out instinctively and adjusted a loose strand of hair from Lin Yue’s face. “You frown when you think too much.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Somewhere in the distance, a spoon dropped.
Lin Yue’s brain stopped functioning.
?? Viewer Comment Thread Begins:
“HELLO??? DID Y’ALL SEE THAT HAIR TUCK???”
“Wait why was that so intimate???”
“She only does that to her sons.”
“Why did Lin Yue freeze like that…”
“Replay it. Replay it NOW.”
Lin Yue swallowed.
“…You noticed?”
“I notice everything,” Arielle said lightly.
That did not help.
At all.
Breakfast, But Make It Awkward
The sons arrived one by one.
Zayden first.
Then Rhett.
Then Emrys.
They immediately clocked the proximity.
Rhett narrowed his eyes slightly.
Emrys grinned slowly.
Zayden observed quietly.
Lin Yue stepped back as if burned.
“I was just asking her about today’s schedule,” she said quickly.
“No one asked,” Rhett replied.
Arielle shot him a look.
He shut up.
Lin Yue glanced at Arielle.
Arielle smiled reassuringly.
Lin Yue’s stomach did something unpleasantly unfamiliar.
Why does she always smile like that?
Why does it feel like approval?
She looked away first.
Lucian Tries Again
Arielle’s phone buzzed during breakfast.
She didn’t check it immediately.
Zayden noticed.
“Work?”
She hesitated. “Something like that.”
Lin Yue’s ears perked up without her consent.
Why do I care?
Finally, Arielle glanced down.
Lucian: I saw the rehearsal footage. I know now.
Her expression changed—just slightly.
Emrys caught it.
“What happened?”
“Nothing,” she said smoothly.
But Lin Yue noticed too.
And something sharp pricked in her chest.
Uncomfortable.
Unnecessary.
Why does it matter who texted her?
She forced herself to eat.
Today’s Task: Cooperative Challenge
The director clapped excitedly.
“Today’s mission: cooking competition! But—” he grinned, “—you must cook for each other’s families.”
Groans.
Immediate groans.
“You will rotate kitchens.”
The new twist? Another celebrity family had arrived that morning.
The media backlash had been loud.
The director had responded quickly.
Two new families now occupied the other end of the village.
One loud and dramatic.
One warm and friendly.
Balance restored.
Chaos upgraded.
Lin Yue was placed in Arielle’s cooking team.
Unavoidable.
Kitchen Scene (Slow Burn Edition)
Arielle moved efficiently.
Measured spices.
Adjusted heat.
Delegated calmly.
Lin Yue watched her more than the food.
“Pass the soy sauce,” Arielle said.
Lin Yue passed it instantly.
“You’re good at this,” Lin Yue murmured.
“I’ve had practice.”
“With them?” Lin Yue nodded toward the sons.
“Yes.”
“They listen to you.”
Arielle smiled faintly. “They trust me.”
Lin Yue stared at that word.
Trust.
It lingered.
“I want that too,” she said quietly.
Arielle misunderstood completely.
“You will,” she said gently. “You just need to stop fighting everyone.”
Lin Yue froze.
“…Fighting?”
“You’re always braced,” Arielle explained softly. “Like someone is about to take something from you.”
That hit too accurately.
Lin Yue’s throat tightened.
?? Viewer Comment Thread EXPLODES:
“OH SHE READ HER SO CLEANLY.”
“That wasn’t an insult. That was therapy.”
“Why does Arielle understand her better than anyone???”
“Lin Yue looks like she’s about to cry.”
“This dynamic is shifting and I’m scared.”
Lin Yue laughed awkwardly. “You’re overthinking.”
Arielle didn’t push.
She just handed her the spoon.
“Stir.”
Lin Yue obeyed.
And realized something horrifying.
She liked being told what to do by her.
Not dominance.
Not submission.
Just… comfort.
That scared her more than rivalry ever did.
Lucian’s Final Message (For Now)
Arielle stepped aside during filming break.
She typed slowly.
Arielle: You should have trusted me then.
A pause.
Then:
Lucian: I know.
Another pause.
Then:
Lucian: Can I fix it?
She stared at that.
Across the courtyard, Lin Yue watched her watching her phone.
And felt something ugly bloom in her chest.
Jealousy.
Not of status.
Not of competition.
Of attention.
She didn’t understand it.
Which made it worse.
End of Day Energy
The episode wrapped with laughter.
Food shared.
The loud family arguing in the background.
The kind family complimenting everyone.
Viewers arguing online.
?? Long Viewer Comment Thread:
“Unpopular opinion: Lin Yue doesn’t look competitive anymore. She looks confused.”
“YES. She watches Arielle like she’s studying her.”
“Studying or admiring?”
“Stop making it weird.”
“No because why did she look jealous when Arielle checked her phone???”
“I think she wants her approval.”
“I think she wants more than that.”
“Y’all are projecting.”
“Bookmarking this thread for future chapters.”
Cliffhanger
That night, Lin Yue sat alone outside.
Watching Arielle laugh softly with the sons.
Warm.
Untouched.
Unbothered.
Lin Yue pressed her palm to her chest.
Why does it hurt when she smiles at someone else?
And for the first time—
She didn’t blame Arielle.
She blamed herself.
