Chapter 58

Leo

I need a fag before I go in.

It’s all I got now. Cigs and coffee.

Never been here before. It’s big. Didn’t think it would be this fucking massive. There’s a man at the door staring at me. Since when do places like this have bouncers?

‘We’re shut,’ he says. His eyes scan my body up and down. ‘Can you smoke that away from the door, please?’

‘Isn’t there an event on tonight?’ I say, taking a drag.

He frowns. ‘It’s ticketed,’ he replies, a bit pissy, a bit like I’m wasting his time.

‘Yeah,’ I say. ‘I know. I’ve got one.’

I hold up my phone screen towards him. He takes a second, like he’s checking if it’s a fake. He looks at his watch. ‘Well, you need to get up there,’ he says. ‘It’s started. They might not let you in.’

‘Huh? I’m sure they will.’

‘Oh yeah?’ he says. ‘And why’s that?’

‘Cos it’s about me.’

He looks at me like I’m high. Which is ironic, considering everything. ‘What are you talking about?’

‘The book. Mallory Maddox’s book. It’s about me. I’m Liam.’

He shrugs, like he couldn’t care less. ‘Haven’t read it, mate. Now put that fag out. It’s on the fifth floor.’
