Chapter Fifty-two

T he worst thing someone can be is alone.

Wolff’s words echoed in her ear. Iris leashed Hugo, packed an overnight bag, texted Gabe she was coming over, and set off for Brooklyn before he even replied.

She couldn’t go to the police. She couldn’t risk further escalation until she figured out her next move.

In the meantime, Iris needed to get herself and her dog somewhere safe.

But on her way to Gabe’s, she thought of someone she could call.

Iris dug through the wad of receipts, CVS coupons, and loyalty cards in her wallet until she found the pink business card she was looking for.

It was a long shot, a Hail Mary in case things went really bad.

But it would be better than nothing. She dialed the number on her phone. An assistant picked up.

Iris cleared her throat. “Hi, I’m trying to reach—Yes, that’s right. No, I need to speak with her directly. I can’t, no, I have to remain anonymous. Please, just tell her I’m the friend of the perfumer, she’ll understand. Dead serious. Yes, I’ll hold.”
