Chapter Thirteen

Waverly

I’m so happy to see Sadie that I’m almost in tears. We try to talk at the same time and end up hugging more than once or even twice.

“Girl, I know you didn’t think I would just let you disappear. You’re stuck with me.” I wonder if she can tell how close to tears I am right now.

“What the hell are you two doing here, not to sound like a dick?”

“Well, we were at your mom and dad’s house when you called them, and the conversation got all hush-hush.

So, I called Rachel at dispatch; she has a sister that goes to school with us and found out our apartment had been broken into and Waverly had been attacked.

Again. I thought you would bring her to your parents’ house, but when you never showed up, I got really worried. ”

“When she told me, I knew immediately what must have happened and where the two of you would end up. I don’t like seeing Sadie sad, and so here we are.”

“I brought you some clothes, by the way. We stopped by a few stores on the way up. That must have been around the time you were getting this brand-new cast. Look at that thing.”

She holds up my wrist and checks out the new cast. I don’t tell her what happened to my old one, and she doesn’t ask.

“Did you tell anybody where you were going?”

“Really? I’m not stupid, Memphis. The only people we told were mom and dad. Dad says he sent a box of ammo he put in my trunk just in case you needed some more.”

Memphis doesn’t look happy that Sadie and his brother came, but I’m thrilled. Now, I don’t have to worry about Sadie being safe the entire time I’m here, however long that is. If they stay, and I am hoping they will.

“Come out and help me bring everything in.” Boston claps his brother on the back.

The two of them disappear outside, and I start to relax for the first time in days. “You are staying, right?”

She gives me a quick nod. “Boston said he could talk Memphis into letting us stay. Something about more eyes on the problem or something.”

“Good. That’s really good.”

Sadie looks different. She has a glow to her, and I can’t help but think it’s got something to do with how much time she’s been spending with Boston.

“Have you and Boston…?”

“Have me and Boston…? Done what?” Sadie gives me a look that is clear of guile, but this girl looks different from the one that went to that party just a couple of days ago.

“Girl, did you lose it?” I hiss out the last part, not wanting Memphis or Boston to hear.

“Lose what?” That same innocent look sits in her big blue eyes before realization dawns. “Oh my God! Waverly, no!”

Why does that kind of make me happy that I’m not the only one here?

“We just kind of fooled around a little?” Her cheeks turn a bright red, and she won’t meet my eyes.

“What does that mean?”

“You know we kiss and touch and…stuff.”

Stuff? “So, are you two dating now?”

“I'm not sure. Boston hasn’t actually called me his girlfriend or anything like that, and I don’t want to push him or make him think we have to use labels if he’s not comfortable doing it.”

“Not comfortable? I think he’s plenty comfortable. He needs to get his head out of his ass and label that shit.”

She gives me a smile that says I’m silly. “I’m completely comfortable and feel safe with him. When it happens, it will happen.”

This doesn’t sound like Sadie at all, and I don’t like it.

“He saved me, Waverly. And he continually keeps me safe. He does the sweetest things like bring me here to you and just…he’s different from all the other people I’ve had crushes on. This…this could be the real thing, and I just don’t want to fuck it up.”

I cross my arms over my chest and arch an eyebrow at her.

She might be alright not defining the ‘relationship’ with Boston, but I am not.

I will be having a conversation with him very soon.

I am going to hate to kill one of Neve’s brothers, but I will without even thinking about it and rue the action later. We will be talking very soon!
