Chapter 1

*~* Fury *~*

Being told I couldn’t go into Jamie’s room pissed me off, yet I can understand why she does not want me around.

I can’t think of who would want to hurt her.

It just makes little sense to me. She helps everyone, and more than she should.

The club brothers love her and have been doing everything they can to find out exactly what happened and why.

Placing my elbows on my knees, I put my head in my hands and sigh. This has turned into a real shitshow and something I never wanted to happen. I wanted Jamie from the first time I met her, but I’ve known I’m not good enough for her.

I come from a broken and violent home. My father, a drunk who abused my mother, beating her badly week in and week out. As soon as I was old enough I was out of there, and away from them both.

My mother never left him, wouldn’t leave him, and put up with the abuse until she had an accident on the stairs and broke her neck.

I thought he did it, but she’d had a camera system installed intending to have him arrested for assault the next time he beat her.

This is the information the neighbor gave me when I visited her.

The camera evidence showed she had had an accident, though it still left me feeling bitter toward him.

In fact, I hate him. He has contacted me a few times over the years, and three times in the last year.

Each time begging for money for his drinking habit.

Money he never got from me. He got nothing from me.

Jamie was the sun that came into my life. We spent evenings in her small house eating pizza, drinking beer, watching movies or some stupid program I wasn’t really paying attention to. Then we’d make out some before having the best sex of my life.

Why I couldn’t stay just with Jamie I don’t know, but I always had to come back to the whores, take out my frustrations on them. I know I have an anger issue. That’s why I was given the road name Fury, because I’m so fast to get to that point.

I’ve been taking notice of Breaker with Molly, and they are so in love with each other it’s hard to watch.

He makes sure she has everything she needs and is safe.

In return, she makes his life as good as she can.

She never asks him for anything, and yet always has whatever is needed at hand when he needs it.

She also pushes his buttons, and when he reacts, she laughs loudly and freely.

I need some of that, but how do I get it now that I have broken what Jamie and I had?

Hearing knocking on my club room door, I step over and open it. Breaker is standing, looking at me with a questioning eyebrow. “What the fuck are you doing, Fury?”

“What do you mean?” I ask because honestly, I’m doing my best to stay out of everyone’s way. Having a pity party away from prying eyes.

“Jamie is fully awake. She doesn’t want to see anyone except Molly and the other old ladies.

I’m not sure what happened, or why, but Fury, if you want this woman you've got to pull your head out of your own ass.” Breaker pushes me back from the door and closes it behind him. “What the fuck did you do?”

I take a seat at the end of the bed again and rub the palms of my hands over my face before looking at Breaker. “I broke her. Broke her trust in me by coming here and fucking the club girls.”

“You fuckin’ idiot. Did you really think a woman like Jamie, a successful businesswoman at that, was going to put up with that shit?

” Breaker paces back and forth the few steps the room allows before turning back to me.

“I’m going to speak to Molly and see what is going on in Jamie’s head.

You are going to keep your nose clean, stay away from the skanks, but the question is, do you want Jamie?

Are you going to put in the effort? Or am I wasting my time on you? ”

“I’ll stay away from the women, and I’ll do what is needed to show Jamie I am serious, but I want to find out who ran her off the road. That’s what I’m going to be looking into before anything else.”

“Good!” Breaker opens the door, gives me one last shake of his head, and closes it behind him as he leaves. All done quietly, and with purpose.

I have no idea how I’m supposed to put any of this right, but before I do anything else I need the details on how badly Jamie is hurt, and everything about the accident.

Stepping into Bull’s office, I close the door quietly behind me. “What are Jamie’s injuries?”

Bull looks me over, and I wait for him to decide if he’s going to tell me or not. I would happily beat the shit out of him, that though would be a mistake if I want his help to find information about the accident. I lean against the wall, fold my arms over my chest, and wait.

“She has two cracked ribs, multiple cuts and bruises, and a concussion. She’ll be out of the hospital in a few days.

They are keeping her at the moment because she has had some issues with her balance.

It’s improving, but not right yet.” Bull turns back to his desk and taps a few keys.

Turning his head, he looks at me with a questioning eyebrow.

“And the accident?” I ask while taking a step away from the wall.

Bull leans back in his seat, and I can see I’m not going to like what he’s found. “I’ve watched the street cams and I see Jamie driving through town. She’d been to old man Phillips’ place, and it looks like she was on her way back to the practice.”

“Why was she going to see Phillips?” I can’t help but ask because he’s way out of town.

Bull smirks. “Well, the fucker had just come out of hospital and he was trying to mow the fucking lawn. His wife contacted Jamie to sort him out because he always listened to her.”

“Of course, Jamie went like an angel to help them out. Did you see Jamie’s accident on a street cam?”

Bull shakes his head. “No, the camera on that stretch of road is out of action. Looking at the report, it’s been waiting to be fixed for six fuckin’ months.”

“We’ve nothing to go on, then?” I rub my chin as I drop my head in thought. “Has anyone been out to look at the area?”

“Yeah, Wraith went out, and he said it was clean. He found nothing suspicious. Just what you would expect from an accident. But we all know it was more than that.” Bull turns again to look at me.

“You and I both know Wraith likes to dig. Speak to him and see what his gut is telling him. Me? I’m looking at all angles.

I’m digging into Jamie’s business, yet so far found nothing untoward. ”

“I’ll do that. Thanks, Bull.” Walking back to my room where I’m going to freshen up before I leave the clubhouse.

I’m heading out to look at the accident site, and I’m going to go to the hospital.

Whether Jamie likes it or not, I’m going to see her.

I have seen nothing of Wraith this morning, so I need to track him down too.

I’m just walking out of the clubhouse when Cannon, our VP, passes me on his way in. Stopping, he turns to me and says, “Church in an hour. Don’t be late and don’t miss it. Whack is not happy at the moment, so don’t piss him off.”

Nodding I continue walking and straddle my hog. If I have to go to the hospital later, it may work out better. It’s quiet when visiting is over, and I can easily sneak in and speak with her. Yeah, I reckon that may work out better.

Riding toward the accident site, I hear another hog approaching from the rear. Looking over my shoulder, I frown. It’s Ghost. Now why the hell is he following me?

Pulling to a stop at the accident area, I climb off my girl, place my helmet on the seat and run my hand through my hair. All the while keeping one eye on Ghost.

Ghost walks toward me and gives me a steady look. “I’ve been out here twice now, Fury. The only thing that made little sense to me was the tire marks. There was no sign of slamming on the brakes to avoid the collision. We would normally see skid marks, but there was nothing.”

Nodding, I walk over to where Ghost is pointing and listen to the information he has gathered. Considering his suspicion that this was a hit and not an accident. “You think it was targeted because of the way the vehicle didn’t show the damage it should if it were a genuine accident?”

“If you were going to hit a vehicle, you would do something to avoid the impact. Turn the wheel so you veer away, slam your foot on the brakes, in some cases aim to hit before the doors so you are not going to impact where someone may be sitting.” Ghost runs his hand over his neck before continuing.

“Go see Smoker and look at both vehicles, Fury. You’ll see the one that hit Jamie has only damage at the front.

It hit clean on. It wasn’t an accident.”

Taking another look at the area, which is showing nothing, you wouldn’t even know an accident had happened. I look at Ghost. “Have you seen any sign of Wraith? He’s not at the clubhouse this morning, and Bull told me he’s been here looking at the site.”

“No, I haven’t seen him this morning. But we both know he got his name because he’s like a specter, a shadowy figure.

Not much different from myself. He can get in and out unseen.

He’s worse than I am, as he will bring death far faster than I would.

I like to study, learn, and be sure. Wraith is more of a go in, do what he has to do and get out.

He doesn’t always stop and check it out–he reacts.

” Ghost is looking across the field to our right, and my eyes follow his, but I see nothing unusual.

Ghost, however, is frowning slightly, then shakes himself and nods to the bikes.

“Come on, we’ve got to get back for church. ”

“Why are you going into church?”

“Pres told me I had to be available for church, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Shrugging because I’m never that close to Pres to understand what is running through his mind, it’s Breaker who is the one that usually fills me in.

He is pissed with me at the minute over Jamie, so I’m not sure he’ll be helping me very much with information at the moment.

I’ll keep my head down and find out what I need myself.

I do need to catch up with Wraith because he will have information that others may not have.

Taking a seat in church, I watch as Whack, Cannon, and Breaker settle into their seats.

Whack quickly opens the meeting and looks around at all the brothers.

The only ones not in church are the prospects.

I can see Smoker isn’t happy as he’s had to leave the auto shop.

Looking around I see Welder isn’t happy to have left the shop either.

I know they have a full quota of work and have been talking about getting an apprentice, or another mechanic to ease some of the stress.

Whack grabs everyone’s attention. “First thing we need to cover is making Ghost a brother. He would be an asset to the club, and his skills prove he is suitable.”

Saddle, our Road Captain speaks, and I turn to look at him. “I would be more than happy to put Ghost up for brother status. I think we need his skills, and if we are up for new brothers, he’s one we can use.”

“Okay, so who would second Ghost?” Whack asks, and I’m about to say I do when Slider speaks. “I’ll second that.”

“Okay, brothers, let’s see a show of hands and we need unanimous,” Whack states and looks around at everyone.

I hold my hand up in front of me so it’s clear I’m voting, ‘Aye’. One-by-one hands raise until Whack nods, slams the gavel down and turns to Ghost. “Okay, brother. Get your cut from Pens and you keep Ghost because, let’s be honest, it is who you are.”

“Thanks, everyone,” Ghost nods to everyone and sits back in his seat.

Whack continues with the meeting. “This so-called accident of Jamie’s.

Wraith has reported that he’s convinced it is not, and so has Ghost. Wraith has taken it a step further and checked out the vehicle.

It was stolen, and the driver has disappeared.

It makes it obvious that this was a hit.

Why? That’s for us to find out. Wraith is taking the lead on the investigation, and if he asks any of you for anything you do it, give it, or whatever else is needed. ”

“Molly is visiting Jamie as much as she can, but she’s doing most of the admin at the practice, so she’s busy. Can someone check out the admin who is Marie. If she is the admin why is Molly doing her job?” Breaker asks, and we all look at him not knowing anything about this situation.

“Breaker, work with Molly on this, then report back to me. Ghost, you and Riddle get back to watching the asshole Senator. Bank, Pens, any news on the pet cremation business?” Whack leans forward and looks at Bank before looking at Pens.

Bank speaks first. “The financial side is fairly easy. The people are selling the business because they have a family member seriously ill and they want to be there for them. We can afford to buy them out.”

We all look to Pens for his input. “The legal side is fairly simple, too. I’ve got all the paperwork ready. I’ll put it through the channels needed as soon as the place is purchased.”

“We have an appointment to have a walkthrough the place. I arranged for Cannon, Zion, Prophet, and Winger to visit. I felt those four were going to be the ones working it, so they were the ones best to see it.” Bank looks at Prophet who is nodding his head in agreement.

“Okay, you four get back to me as soon as you’ve been. If we are doing this pet thing, then let’s get a move on. Ghost, Riddle, report as soon as you can. I want to know what Haroldson is up to.”

The meeting closes, and we all head to the kitchen where the club women will hand out lunches. It’s normally something simple at this time, but my stomach is growling as I didn’t eat breakfast. In fact, I’ve had nothing since supper yesterday.

Taking a seat and a bite of the BLT, I scroll through my phone and find a contact that I’ve not spoken to for a long time, but the fucker owes me three. Typing quickly, I send the message.

Fury: I want all you can find on the accident involving Jamie Grant. Anything you can find.

Shawn: OK. Should I know why?

Fury: She was run off the road. I want to know why and who?

Shawn: OK. I’ll get the information.

Shawn gets into places that I don’t need or want to know about. I just want the information that will help me protect Jamie. She may think I’m an asshole, and I don’t blame her for that, as I have been acting like one. But that stops now.
