Chapter 6 #2

Checking on the meatloaf, I pop the potatoes into the oven and then sit back down to wait.

It doesn’t seem five minutes before there is a knock on the door.

Once again, I ask who’s there before opening it.

Molly gives me a frown as she walks in with Breaker close behind.

This time I avoid any hugs and just give them a welcoming smile.

“Since when did you start asking who’s at your door?” Molly asks, and I see Breaker take notice of that.

“Well, it’s not rocket science! I’ve been around these guys long enough to pick up on some of their ways and thinking. I might get one of those peepholes for the door.” I think I’ve been clever thinking of that but Breaker soon bursts that bubble.

“You could do that, but I’ll get Bull to rig you up with some security cameras discreetly placed.

While you put your eye to the peephole, some miscreant can stick you with a screwdriver.

Cameras that a visitor isn’t aware of, that is the way to go.

” Breaker takes out his cell and walks from the kitchen.

The oven pings, and Molly jumps up. “I’ll check that. You sit still.”

“Heavens above, Molly. That’s all I damn well do, sit around.”

“Well, that’s not strictly true is it, Jamie? You had a visitor this morning, didn’t you?” I’m just going to raise a ruckus about her spying on me when I see her looking at the flowers on the table. “Dare I ask who they were from?”

“Yes, I had a gentleman caller this morning.” Just as I say this, Breaker walks back into the kitchen.

“If that gentleman was Fury, he’s got fewer gray cells than I gave him credit for. Pres will roast him slowly over a hot coal pit if he knows he’s been here.” Breaker shakes his head at me.

“They were from Bandit, actually. Why would Fury coming here get him in trouble with anyone but me?” Both Molly and I stare at Breaker for his response.

“Ah, well, you see. Erm. Nothing. Is that meatloaf I can smell?”

“Yes, and if you want to be eating it and not wearing it, you’ll spill the beans.” I rest my elbows on the table, cross my arms, and lean forward.

“I can’t discuss what happens in church. You both know that, so let’s pretend I didn’t just make that slip of the tongue, eh? Good girls.”

Molly squints at Breaker before saying, “I think, Jamie, that Fury has been told to give you space. I do know that he’s been given some grief by certain brothers for his actions with Floss.

I also know that he’s giving himself a hard time for his actions.

” Still squinting at Breaker, she has him squirming on his seat.

“I’m not telling you anything in confidence ever again if you’re going to be a tattletale.” Breaker squints back at her.

“I never mentioned you, dear husband. I hear things from my own sources at the club. I too have learned intelligence gathering from some of your brothers.” Molly gives me a wink, and I think she has probably learned far more in her few months than I have in the years I’ve known them.

“Well, despite whatever any of the brothers may or may not have said, I’m saying this loud and clear. Fury did the dirty deed with a dirty skank, and he can keep his dirty dick away from me. I’m done playing second fiddle to anyone.”

Plating up the meal, Molly hands out cutlery and we tuck in, in silence I might add.

Once the meal is finished, Molly cleans up and then we retire to the living room with a coffee each.

I get the ball rolling when I ask for any information that has been gleaned surrounding my accident.

Breaker gives me all the non-confidential information he has, and Wraith’s theory.

“I agree with Wraith, Breaker. It wasn’t an accident, but I have no clue what the motive might be. Have Bull or any of the other officers got any ideas?”

“None of us can think of anyone who would want to hurt you, Jamie. What makes you so sure it wasn’t an accident, though?” Breaker sits forward and waits for my response.

“I remembered a couple of things from just before the accident. I don’t know why, they just came to me.

The driver of the van was wearing a balaclava, ski mask, whatever you want to call those things with three holes in them.

He had a long beard hanging out the bottom of his mask.

OH! And it was gray. I just remembered that, too.

Also, the van's engine was revving louder and faster when he aimed for me. He put his foot down to make the impact harder.” I smile at them both, though why I should be happy to remember that someone tried to kill me, I don’t know.

“That would fit with what Smoker found on the front of your truck.” Breaker tells me of the deep marks from a push bar on my truck.

“Oh my God. They built homemade bars to be sure they got me? I guess I should do a bit more than just have some cameras fitted around the place. Breaker, could you go to my house and fetch my Sig and my shotgun? I’m fully licensed up and everything, but they’re not going to do me much good in a gun cabinet miles away, are they?

” My mind starts to click into survival mode, and other things start to pop into my head.

“There’s a hunting knife with the shotgun and a boot knife with the Sig.

You’d better bring those, and plenty of spare ammo for both weapons, too.

That’s in the bottom of the gun cabinet. ”

“Jamie, how about I run you over there and we just let you point out what you want and I load it into my truck? That might be easier, and while you’re there, you might remember your rocket launcher and landmines, eh?” Breaker laughs, but I soon wipe that smile off his face.

“Hell yeah, I forgot them. I have some C4 explosive and detonators, too.” Crossing my eyes and sticking my tongue out at him, in my favorite face pull, I have Molly laughing along with us.

Two hours later, we’re back with my armory. Not as large as some I’ve seen, but definitely everything that I have, and am proficient with. I used to be a keen hunter back in the day with my dad, and maybe that is something I should look to take up again.

Breaker kindly stripped, cleaned and oiled everything for me before they left, so all good to go if needed. Once again, I’m about worn out from doing very little. Very little by my usual standards, anyway. Time for bed once again.
