The Hot Nerd #2
After waiting for twenty minutes, I finally got through to someone with our IT department, who assured me someone would be up shortly to look at the laptop.
She apologized for the delay, but they had been understaffed and just hired someone, so they’re trying to catch up now.
While I waited, I rolled my chair into Rachel's cubicle, and we sat and watched funny animal videos together.
“Um, excuse me, ladies. Sorry to bother you. I’m looking for Allie Roberts? I was told there seem to be some system issues needing to be looked at.” A warm tenor voice asked from behind us.
“Oh, yes, hi. That would be—” I started to say as I turned around and stood up.
Any words I had to say went right out the window as I came face-to-face with the most handsome man I’d ever seen.
He was dressed in black slacks that seemed to form to his legs, and a crisp white button-up with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and god, those forearms.
His hair was neatly styled with some of the curls flopping over his forehead and onto his black rimmed glasses.
Rachel shoved my leg, and I shook my head to get me out of the daze I was in.
He slowly took me in from head to toe, and I watched as Adam's apple bobbed while he swallowed and slowly pushed his glasses up his nose.
Why was that so hot? I continued to stare into his ocean blue eyes at a loss for words.
“Uh, I’m gonna go make some copies of this really quick.
You needed those copies still, right, Allie?
Be right back!” Rachel said as she got up, slightly pushing me forward as she did, and headed toward the break room, definitely not where the printers were.
I shot daggers at her back as she walked off.
The traitor left me all alone. If looks could kill, she’d be down and out.
He finally broke our stare off, and a river of words started to flow. “Hi, sorry. I’m Spencer. You’re Allie? You need the laptop looked at. What seems to be wrong? Don’t you worry, we’ll get you back up in no time.”
I let out a huff and threw my hands up. “I don’t really know, to be honest. I keep getting error messages, and it won’t stay connected.
I tried rebooting it, but it only helped for half a day.
” I tried to remain calm so my voice would come out smooth and collected, but on the inside, my stomach was in knots.
How did I handle this? I all but openly gawked at this man at the gym, and just now too.
Now I find out he works here? Do I bring it up or say nothing? God, I didn’t know what to do.
“Okay, let me um, let me take a look. Do you mind if I take a seat?” He asked while gesturing to my desk.
“Yes, yes, absolutely. Sorry, I don’t know what’s wrong with me!
Here, let me move some of this out of the way.
” I started to move my water and notebooks—somehow managing to not drop anything—so he had more room to work.
“Okay, there we go! Sorry, I try to stay organized, but sometimes it doesn’t happen.
I feel like no matter what, I’m perpetually an organized mess.
” I laughed nervously and stepped out of his way.
As I moved, I took in a deep breath, accidentally inhaling his cologne as I did, and my god, he smelled absolutely delicious.
“That’s okay, totally understand that. Alright, let me take a look here so we can get you back up and running.”
While he clicked around on the computer, I pulled my phone out and texted Emma. I didn’t know if she would respond since she was in the middle of a shift, but I desperately needed her to.
Allie: You’re never going to believe who’s working on my laptop at work right now
Em: Hmm is it someone famous?
Em: Pete Wentz?
Allie: Ha Ha Em. Why would Pete Wentz be in my office?
Allie: No he isn’t although with those muscles he could be
Em: NO WAY..THE GUY FROM THE GYM?!??!
Allie: YES! HE WORKS HERE!
Allie: Idk what to do.. Do I say anything or just pretend I don't know who he is?
Allie: My anxiety can’t handle this
“I think I have it fixed for you. It seemed like there was a recent update that went out, but for some reason, it didn’t want to go through on your computer.
Just needed to be pushed through manually, so it should be good to go now.
Easy fix.” Spencer said, startling me out of my mini freak-out.
I almost threw my phone at the poor guy because I was so focused on texting Em.
“Oh! Okay, great! I’m glad it was something simple.
You’re amazing. I mean for fixing the computer.
Not that you aren’t amazing as a person, I’m sure you are amazing…
I’m going to stop talking now before I embarrass myself anymore.
Thank you.” My face was on fire from blushing so hard.
I never felt this out of control around someone, but there was something about him.
I was right, he truly was more gorgeous in person.
Snap out of it, Allie. Do not check the hot tech guy out at work; it isn’t polite.
He slowly stood up, keeping his eyes glued to mine as he pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose again. Why is that so hot?
“It’s not a problem at all. I’d like to think I’m pretty amazing, but hey, what can I say?” He let a little crooked grin show with the faintest pop of a dimple.
Of course, he also had dimples.
He slowly walked toward me and extended his hand. “Just to properly introduce myself. Hi, I’m Spencer.”
I looked up into those crystal blue eyes of his, my face still hot from blushing, and reached out to shake his hand.
“Hi, I’m Allie. It’s nice to formally meet you, Spencer.”
“Allie,” he said my name as if he was tasting it.
He said it like he wanted to savor it. His eyes had darkened ever so slightly, and he looked as if he wanted to savor more than just my name.
“I’m sorry if this is weird, but—” A shrill ring interrupted whatever he was about to ask me.
He pulled his cellphone out of his back pocket and tightened his grip on it when he looked at the screen. “I’m sorry, I have to take this.”
“Oh no, that’s okay, I understand how crazy work can be.” I tucked a stray hair behind my ear to keep my hands busy. “It was really nice to meet you, Spencer. Thank you again.” I smiled sheepishly at him and moved around him to the breakroom.
Why was it that the one man who caught my attention had to work here?
That was like rule number one: you don’t date where you work.
Everyone knows it leads to trouble. However, I was a glutton for punishment and couldn’t help but glance back at him as I walked away and saw his gaze fixed on me as he talked to whoever was on the other line, his eyes darkening.
I was going to get myself into big trouble. I could already feel it.
I walked into the breakroom, completely forgetting that Rachel had ditched me and came back here.
“Finally. What was that about! I could cut that tension with a damn teaspoon,” she all but yelled when I walked in.
“What in the damn hell!” I slapped my hand against my chest, trying to slow my breathing, “Jesus Christ, you’re going to give me a heart attack, you little red-headed gremlin!”
“I’ve been sitting back here on pins and needles waiting! Now SPILL! What’s with the hot nerd?”
“Me and Em went to the gym the other day, and I saw him there. I couldn’t look away from the man.
I mean, you saw him, he's gorgeous, but I didn’t think I’d see him again so soon, let alone at work, of all places!
We didn’t even really talk. He was going to say something, but his phone rang, and I used it as an excuse to run because my brain is short-circuiting and not computing with my mouth.
” I ran my hands through my hair while I let the word vomit flow. I wasn’t sure what to do.
“Well, you do have some issues with not being in control, but that’s beside the point.
” I shot daggers again at her. She waved her hand dismissively at the look and continued, “And I also don’t blame you for checking him out either, the man is fine as hell.
Those forearms? The hands? Goodness. Do you think he’s interested? ”
“I don’t know. Like I said, we really didn’t talk. He had this look on his face that made me think he could be, but I could’ve been reading the situation wrong.”
“Maybe you’ll run into him again. I mean, the company isn’t super huge, and we’ve gone out before and run into other people from different departments.
Plus, you just said you saw him at your gym too, so you could very well see him again.
If it doesn’t work out, though, let a girl know cause I’d like a shot at that. ” Rachel laughed and fanned herself.
“It should be against the law to look that good.” I giggled in response, but then sighed as I ran my fingers through my hair.
“Not to mention, we work together too. I dunno about that, but yeah… yeah, you’re right.
I need to get my shit together. Besides, he may not even be interested, and I’m reading into it wrong.
Also, didn’t you tell me earlier you were swearing off dating?
” Rachel shrugged, and we both headed back out to our desk.
I needed a serious girls' night with Emma to talk this out because I did not want to end up in another shitty relationship.
I was twenty-nine years old, and while that wasn’t old, it was older than I always thought I’d be before I got married.
Every little girl plans their dream life.
Married to Prince Charming, a gaggle of kids, and in my case, all of the dogs we could have room for.
Except that wasn’t how life panned out for me, despite all the planning I did.
