15. Coffee’s for Closers

Coffee's for Closers

My alarm went off at seven a.m., and it felt like I had only slept a few minutes.

We didn’t get to bed till after two thirty, so needless to say, I am beyond exhausted and sore, but in the most delicious way.

Thankfully, it’s almost the end of the week, and we don’t have anything exciting planned for work.

A relaxing end to the week was just what was needed.

“Ugh, five more minutes. I don’t wanna get up.” Spencer pulled me into him and nuzzled his face into my chest, which had nothing covering it because we passed out after our last round. I was equal parts excited and scared after our conversations last night.

He worshiped every inch of me. As if touching me was the most sacred thing he’d ever done. Not only that, but we were official now, too. We could date and not have to worry about backlash at work, and we didn’t have to hide it.

I ran my fingers through his hair and hit snooze on my phone.

I could spare another ten minutes to lie here.

This beautiful man seemed too good to be true.

The morning sun was barely starting to peek through the gray overcast clouds, and the patter of rain was steady against the window. Days like this were ones I wish

“Good morning, sleepy head,” I said as I stretched and continued to play with his hair. “We probably need to get up. Want some coffee?”

“Mmm, yes, need coffee,” Spencer grumbled as he wrapped his arms around me tighter.

“I thought I was a bad morning person. You may be worse than I am. What kind of coffee would you like?”

“Whatever is easiest to make. Do we have to get up?” He tilted his chin up, those sleepy eyes meeting mine. I grinned up at him as I rubbed small circles along his back.

“Unfortunately, we do since we both have to work.”

“Well, at least I get to wake up to a beautiful woman next to me.”

“More like your head buried in her chest, but sure, close enough.” I laughed, causing him to bury his head more, which then turned into him trying to motorboat me. “Oh my god, you did not do that first thing in the morning!”

“Whoops, my bad.” He didn’t seem the least bit sorry. I got up and yanked my robe on. It was only thin cotton, so it wasn’t covering much, but he wasn’t going to get the girls after that.

“You can fix your own coffee then.” I picked up one of the many throw pillows I had and launched it at his head. His arm shot out to catch it and toss the ammunition away. Damn, he was quick too.

“Oh, you wanna play dirty? We can play dirty.”

Before I could even register, he jumped up from the bed and pulled me back down, pinning my hands above my head and trying to tickle me.

Clearly, Dolly wasn’t having it because she jumped up and started licking his arms, trying to get him to stop.

“Okay, okay, girl, I’ll surrender, you win. I’ll leave your mama alone.”

“I’m gonna get you back later, just wait.”

“I love it when you talk dirty to me, baby girl.” That cocky grin he wore made my core clench. I needed to move before we never left this bed.

“So done with you, come on, Dolly girl, let’s go.

” Laughing as I left the room to let her out and start some coffee.

I opened the doors to let the fresh air in, the wind blowing in the clean smell of rain.

Outside, it was gloomy with rain persistent enough it would keep you indoors all day unless you had to leave.

The rich aroma of coffee mixed with summer rain was such a relaxing scent as it filled the kitchen.

Memories already started playing on loop in my head from last night as I leaned against the bar.

How tender he was with me, yet so controlling and rough at times.

The way his hands and mouth reverently worshiped and roamed every inch of me, making me feel so incredibly beautiful and wanted.

I don’t think anyone ever made me feel that way.

I reached up and touched my lips, the phantom kisses still lingering on them.

I grabbed both cups of the sweet, steaming caramel drinks and padded down the hall.

Dolly trotted ahead of me into the bedroom and hopped up onto the bed.

Spencer was propped up against the headboard on his phone.

Something seemed off because I could see the furrow between his brows and the hard set of his jaw.

“I come bearing gifts,” I said in a singsong voice to hopefully ease the tension I could see in his shoulders.

He slowly slid his eyes up to mine as he laid his phone down.

“You’re amazing, have I told you that?” He took the cup from my hand and pulled me closer to him.

Carefully, I climbed into his lap, folding my long legs up to my chest and nestling against his warm body. “What time do you have to clock in?”

“Not till eight thirty, so I still have some time left. Hey, are you okay? You seemed a little tense when I came back in here.” I didn’t want to pry, but I also wanted to make sure everything was good.

Make sure he wasn’t having second thoughts about last night.

I wrapped my hands around the ceramic mug, the warmth seeping into my hands.

He let out a long sigh. “Yeah, I’m okay, just kinda stressed out.

My older brother tried to message me again, and I don’t understand why he’s doing it.

This is the second time this month. It’s been years now, and I don’t know what he could want from me.

We’d never been close, and it only got worse as we got older.

” He leaned his head on my shoulder and balanced his coffee cup on my knee.

His was a hot pink mug that said Girl Boss on the side.

A small present Emma had gotten me when I started this new job.

She loved finding me mugs with some obscure saying, like the one I was using currently.

It had I love DILFS on the side. It was truly impressive how she found these things.

Spencer took a small sip of coffee before he continued. “Not to mention work has been a lot recently. It feels like we’re always putting out fires. One issue gets resolved, and then three more pop up in its place.”

“I’m sorry. Is there anything I could do for you?” I asked as I took a sip of my coffee.

“No, it’s okay, it’s just stressful, is all. Work will calm down, I know, but I don’t want to open that door again with my family. It’s too exhausting and draining on my mental health.”

“I understand, it’s why I block my dad on everything whenever he tries.”

“You make it all seem so easy,” he grumbled against my shoulder.

“It hasn’t always been easy, and there was a time I used sex as a form of self-harm and escape because I didn’t want to face my own issues.

It wasn’t till Emma sat me down and made me have the tough conversations that I realized I needed to change.

What I was doing wasn’t helping anything.

As much as I hated having to talk it out, I knew she was doing it out of a place of love.

Looking back, I know I was being reckless—beyond reckless—and the fact that I didn’t end up with an STD, pregnant, or on an episode of Dateline is sheer luck.

The choices I made after I left Cameron were not good ones, to say the least. Random men, dive bars, and low self-esteem aren’t a good mix. ”

I took a sip of my coffee, trying to forget about those dark times.

The hurt that always lingered from never being someone’s first choice.

The sting that seemed to be a constant reminder when the only text I’d get was at night to see if I was up.

The hollowness of everyone around me using me for what they wanted, and never giving two shits to see how broken and hurt I was.

If someone had looked a little closer, they would have seen the cracks in my perfect makeup, tears that begged to fall, and the young girl who craved to be touched and wanted by anyone.

“Emma sounds like a really good friend. I’m glad that you had her,” Spencer said, bringing me back out of my thoughts as he turned and placed a small kiss on my neck.

“Me too, she helped me through some dark times—times I know I may not have been the best person to be around, she was always there. I’d do anything for her.

We always joke about how we’re each other's platonic soul mates.” I chuckled and wrapped my hands around my mug, willing some of its warmth back into me.

Thinking back on all the stuff Em and I had been through and all the good times we had.

At this point, we’ve known each other for half our lives, which was crazy to think about.

She was around for Oliva being born, so they were like sisters too.

“You know you can always talk to me, though, right? I know you have Carson, and I know this,” I waved my hand between us, “is still new, but if you ever need someone else, I’ll be here for you.”

“I know you will, sweetheart, and I appreciate it.” He kissed the top of my head, and we sat in silence, cuddled up against each other for another few minutes, drinking our coffee as we both slowly woke up. Letting the small tension from the conversation ease away from us.

“I guess I’d better get up and get somewhat ready so I’ll feel productive today.”

“Yeah, me too. I also need to get my laptop connected to your Wi-fi.”

“Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that. If you go into my office, there’s a sticky note with the password on it on my desk.

” Unfolding myself from his lap and stretching, I padded over, set my coffee on the dresser, and walked into the closet.

I pulled out a comfy, matching bra and panty set, and a pullover matching set for the day.

I was pulling my panties on when Spencer walked in, still naked.

“Man, this is a nice closet. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one so big in person.” He raised his hands above his head and leaned into the door. I couldn’t help but trail my eyes over his body and the muscles he had packed onto his thighs and arms.
