Chapter 3 Name on the Slip

"Over here. Hurry up."

The girl from the front desk urged me along and pulled open the Break Room door.

I followed her like a machine. My head was a mess.

Ji Yanli. How the hell was it Ji Yanli?

Six months out, I had gone out of my way to avoid every place I might run into someone from the old days.

I never thought I would smash into the last person I wanted to see, in a city I barely knew.

"Just put them here."

She pointed at a corner of the Break Room.

I set the jugs down and backed out.

"Next time look before you walk in. That's our conference room. Random people can't go in."

She was still going on about something, but I could not hear it anymore.

My head was full of that one glance.

Ji Yanli sat straight in a leather chair, elites in suits all around him.

A stack of papers sat in front of him. A cup of coffee steamed by his hand.

"Sign this."

She held out a delivery slip.

I took the pen and tried hard not to let my hand shake.

In the end I did not sign my own name. I wrote Lao Zhang's.

I lied to myself.

As long as I did not put my name down, it would be like I had never come.

Eight years. He probably would not recognize me anymore.

"Alright. You can go."

She said it like it was just business.

I nodded and walked toward the elevator.
