Chapter 32

An interview with David and Daisy…

I always forget how crazy your story was with Janey’s emergency taking place in the middle of it…

David: That was a wild day for sure. I’m so glad I was in the right place at the right time. I don’t like to think about what might’ve happened to her and PJ if I hadn’t been right there.

Daisy: I think of that day every time we see PJ, who’s growing into such a handsome, sweet young man.

Is he aware that you saved him and his mom?

David: He is. Janey made a thing of it years ago, and since then, he’s thanked me a couple of times. Once he said, ‘It would’ve been a bummer to croak before I ever got to live.’ That made me laugh. He’s got his mother’s irreverent sense of humor.

I’m sure you’ve saved some other island residents in the ensuing years.

David: A few.

Daisy: He’s being humble. We’re very lucky to have him on our island. He’s also pushed to vastly expand the clinic’s capabilities to better handle true emergencies.

That must be a great feeling of accomplishment for you and a sense of security for island residents.

David: The upgrades have saved some lives, so we’re glad we did it.

Your daughter Helen was born almost nine years ago. How is she?

Daisy: She and her younger sister, Josephine, are the lights of our lives. We call her Josie, and she’s five. Their favorite thing is dance classes with “auntie” Tiffany and the other kids.

David, you’re a girl dad! How is that?

David: I love being a girl dad. They’re in charge of me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Daisy: He’s great with them. They have amazing tea parties, and he lets them paint his nails and do his hair.

Aw, that’s so cute! Daisy, are you still working at the hotel?

Daisy: I am! I’m the general manager these days, since Linda has mostly retired.

Wow, that’s an awesome promotion. Congratulations.

Daisy: Thanks. I was afraid to take it on at first, but Linda is super flexible, and she always says family comes first. I love the job, so it’s worked out well.

David: She’s great at it. She started a networking group for herself, Laura and the other hotel and inn managers on the island. It’s been a great source of support for all of them.

Daisy: It’s nice to spend time with people facing many of the same challenges.

It sounds like you guys have made a nice life for yourselves.

David: We really have, and it’s thanks to Daisy, who makes it all happen.

Daisy: We make it happen together.
