Ch. 10 #2
I stood as my attorney made his way to the table.
The bailiff walked me over before standing to the side.
I looked over at the crowd and didn’t see Adele’s face not one time.
Twenty-One wasn’t gon’ show regardless of what I was going through.
Them boys knew to stay put and wait this shit the fuck out.
I’d get up with them as soon as I touched down.
“Counselor have you and your client came to an understanding with the proceeding of the case?” the judge inquired without even looking us in the eye.
I was confused on why she was asking that nigga anything in the first place.
He ain’t know shit and you could tell by the way his goofy ass started flipping through them fuck ass papers in front of him.
When I said give me a court appointed attorney, I meant one that knew what the fuck he was doing, not the nigga they just hired.
“Uhhh, yes… Your Honor. Let me see here. I’m sorry, my papers aren’t in order.” He leaned over to me and tried to ask me on the low, “How do you plead?”
“Muthafucka not guilty. Aye, Your Honor, he over here playing and shit. I ain’t guilty.” They were ‘bout to add another assault charge to the list from me doing this nigga in. I wasn’t playing with my freedom, and I damn sho wasn’t ‘bout to let him do it.
“No sir. You will watch your mouth in my courtroom and show some respect, Mr. Atkins,” the judge stated getting me together quick.
“Yes ma’am,” I mumbled.
This nigga was still flipping through papers, and I was vexed as to why. What the fuck was he looking for at this point? I genuinely had to turn to him with my head cocked to the side like I was missing something.
Is it me or is this muthafucka trying me?
“We—”
The attorney went to say something else when he was cut off by this boss ass nigga walking through the doors. If money was tailored, that nigga was wearing it. He looked more official than this cracker beside me. My boy was clean from head to toe.
I was usually the tallest nigga in the room, but he stepped in taking that title from me quickly. His broad ass shoulders made him look like he belonged on the line guarding somebody’s favorite quarterback. He was far from the usual.
“Good afternoon, Your Honor. I’d appreciate it if you addressed me from now on. I represent Genesis Atkins and the Atkins family.”
Who the fuck is you?
“Good afternoon, Counselor Taylor. How nice of you to join us. Mr. Atkins are you acceptive of Counselor Taylor as your new attorney?” she asked me directly.
Boss man gave me a stern look like if I knew better, I’d choose better. I gladly accepted him thinking Adele set this shit up for me. She was late as usual, but she came through. “Hell yeah.”
“I’m not warning you again, Mr. Atkins.”
“My bad, Your Honor. I’m just glad I got somebody else besides Poindexter,” I answered.
“Your Honor, I would like a continuance to get up to speed with my client’s case if that’s not too much to ask,” he said smiling from ear to ear. It was clear that nigga was flirting and using his skills to get what he wanted.
“We’ll reconvene in eight weeks,” she said granting him the continuance. She banged the gavel, and the next case was called.
When she said eight weeks, I frowned hard as hell. I already did eight in this muthafucka, now I had to do an additional eight of them? I couldn’t be too upset though ‘cause that White bitch would’ve have me doing life.
“I’d like to speak to my client,” the nigga I now knew as Attorney Taylor said to the bailiff. The bailiff granted him a moment with a head nod. He leaned into me saying, “Give me a minute,” before leaving the same way he came.
I was led out the side door and down the hall to a private room where I was told to sit and wait.
I was curious to know what the hell that nigga had to say and where the hell he came from.
Shit, more importantly, how much was this nigga being paid to step for me.
From the cologne alone he smelled like money and me and Adele wasn’t shitting them kind of bills out.
A mental note was taken for me to pay her a call so I could figure some shit out. She came through when I thought she forgot about me. I fussed a lot, but that lady showed me she cared more ‘bout her son than some bread.
Minutes passed before the door opened and my new attorney walked through it. He sat across from me and stared like I knew what the fuck was up. He was looking at me and I was looking at him both waiting for the other to speak first. I grew irritable and impatient.
“Aight, I ain’t ‘bout to do this with yo’ ass. Who you?” I asked not caring how he took it.
“Yeah, y’all niggas related fa sho.”
I was taken aback by his response. How he spoke in front of the judge wasn’t how he came at me just now. I could tell he was just as hood and could battle with the best but that went for both in the field and in the courtroom. His confidence was that high. I sat back and smirked.
“Who the fuck am I related to exactly?” I’d be damned if I let a cat kill my curiosity behind this shit. If he was heading to where I thought he was, I had words for every party involved.
“Oh, you know who lil’ nigga. Back to yo’ first question, I’m Yonnis Taylor, representative for the Atkins. I was asked to come and see the charges. Good thing I stepped in when I did. Look like yo’ mans was struggling out there,” he replied.
“Boy, he was ‘bout to have me facing football numbers, I swear. Real shit though, who sent you?” I was still looking for an answer behind that.
“Adele reached out to your father for help, and he called me per usual.”
Betrayal always comes from the one you least expect. I had an earful for her ass the next time we spoke.
“I don’t need shit from that sorry ass nigga or whoever else attached to him. And don’t call that bitch my father. He ain’t shit but a donor,” I snapped.
Senior would never see a day where his name was attached to mine as my fuckin’ father. He knocked my mama up and left us to figure shit out instead of making sure his son was straight. I would never respect him.
Yonnis laughed and nodded. “Yeah, you and Royce gon’ get along just fine. You got anything you need to tell me behind this shit? It’s best for you to tell me the real, so I can get you off and out without hiccups.”
Trust was something I didn’t hand out lightly, so I was hesitant to tell this nigga anything.
However, I wasn’t trying to sit too much longer.
If he could get me off and out like he stated, why the fuck not tell the truth.
I gave him the run down from the moment I stepped foot in the coffee shop at the mall to the moment they had me in cuffs at Cheyonne’s crib.
‘Cause the fact still remained I didn’t shoot the guard or steal the jewels.
I even spiced up the story a lil’ bit and told him how I fucked on Brat pretty ass.
“Wait, so you and the hostage had consensual sex?”
“Man, Brat sat that pussy in a nigga lap and went to work. The seducing came from her, not me.”
“The main charge is armed kidnapping so let’s focus on that. Was any weapon confiscated at the time of the arrest?” he questioned with a dipped brow.
“Nah.”
Good thing I put that shit in her nightstand without her ass knowing. I’m sure she would’ve given that up too with her snitching ass.
Yonnis smiled even harder and nodded like he won the lottery.
“Y’all niggas got a thing for barging into people lives and setting up shop.
Look, everything you told me is exactly what I needed to hear.
Give me them eight weeks to gather every detail I can, and I’ll touch bases in between time. You need anything until then?”
“Just get me the hell up out of here, Yonnis.”
“I got you lil’ nigga. Sit tight. Oh, and don’t be surprised if you have visitors over the next few weeks.”
