Chapter 10

They were entering dangerous territory. She was dropping off right next to him. A drowsy Miranda always pushed his buttons real fast. A drowsy Miranda…alone with him…with a bed right there—temptation he wasn’t going to be able to resist for long.

He was just a man, damn it. And this woman—

It was time she went back to her own room before he did something completely stupid.

During the light of the day, he kept himself in check with her easily enough.

They were professionals, and damned good at what they did.

Neither of them wanted to screw that up.

But when it was like this, and just the two of them, and darkness surrounded them…

every thought of resisting what she did to him flew right out of his head.

Knight knew himself well.

His one weakness now had cinnamon hair and the most perfect mouth he’d ever seen.

A mouth made for dark things that most every man with a pulse fantasized about.

And that was just the start. He wanted nothing more right now than to get his damned hands on her—and damn the consequences. Therein lay the danger.

“Ok, Sunny. Back to your own room.” He stood, probably faster than he should have. She jerked back and looked at him. Those green eyes just blinked.

She had on her glasses, meaning she’d taken out the contacts. The eyes were still just as green.

She had been seriously blessed in genetics to get eyes just like that. But it wasn’t her eyes he wanted to see up close and personal. And that was why this sweet-smelling temptation had to get her ass back to her own room.

Right now.

“Yes, boss,” she drawled. “I forgot you had a nine-o’clock bedtime, and it is way past that.”

But she was the one yawning.

“Get out. Rest. We’ll pick this up in the morning.”

He reached out and did something completely stupid. Knight touched her.

Knight knew better than that. He had rules against it, damn it. The temptation was just too real. He used his grip on her hand to pull her out of the chair. “You better go soon. Call the kid. Or he’ll be in bed before you can.”

“He’s with my dad and stepmom now. Two hour time difference.”

“Doesn’t he have school?”

“Brynlock’s on a two-week break. They go year-round and break frequently. He likes to spend as much time in Masterson as he can. I took him up with me when Ed Dennis sent me home for that OPJ case and left him with my dad.”

And the bruises had barely faded for that one.

She’d ended up in fender bender on the ice. Knight hadn’t breathed right until he’d heard from Jac that she was okay.

“Then, go make the kid happy and call him. I’m going to check in with PAVAD. We’ll meet back at eight?”

“Sounds like a plan.” She sent him a cheeky grin. “I don’t know what I’d do without you to keep me on the right path, Knight. You’re just so…knightly.”

“Go.”

Before he did something he would regret. Like tuck her into his bed and not let her out until morning. She just gave him a little wave and a sleepy grin that had him scowling. “Go.”

She went.

Taking the sun with her.

Damn it.

The woman was going to ruin him one day. It was a given.
