Glass (Knot Club #5)

The door beta nods at me. I nod back. She's been working Thursdays longer than most of the regulars have been members, and she has that flat professional face that never moves except for the micro-acknowledgment she gives me because we've been doing this dance for years.
My membership is older than her kid, Max—she mentioned him once during a flu outbreak in an unguarded moment and has never brought him up since.
He's in second grade now, but he'll always be a toddler to her, from the year she started here.
I don't know why I remember his name. People tell me things and I keep them.
It makes them feel seen. It makes me useful.
That's more or less the shape of every relationship I have.
I drop my coat at check. Underneath I'm in a charcoal button-down, fitted but not flashy, matching slacks, dress shoes I've had resoled twice.
I don't dress for the club. I just dress the way I always do—a little sharper than most people here.
The regulars know me by my shape and my walk, not by what I'm wearing.
The bar beta already has my drink waiting: gin, cold, just a little.
She doesn't smile at anyone, which I respect.
I slide a bill across the bar that's more than the drink costs because I like being liked by the staff.
You should always be liked by the staff.
My mask is matte black, full-coverage, shaped to sit close.
Nothing flashy. I've worn the same one for three years.
I don't need it to tell anyone who I am; my shoulders do that, my walk does that, the fact that the bar beta has a drink ready before I reach the stool.
The people who recognize me recognize me. The ones who don't don't need to.
I take a slow sip. The gin does its precise, familiar work—lands in my chest like a key turning, warm and deliberate, and I let it settle.
It's heat night, obviously. The air is thick enough to make new members stagger when they walk in.
Pheromones layered over pheromones, need stacked on need—a hundred people whose bodies have all decided tonight is the night.
Someone is being knotted in the second alcove near the stairs; I can hear it from here, the wet rhythmic sound of it, the broken little noise the omega makes on each thrust. A beta with a tray walks past carrying bottled water and what looks like a folded shirt, stepping neatly over a pair of legs. Professionals.
I'm in my own early heat, inconvenient but manageable.
My suppressants stopped being enough years ago.
These days I just run my cycle through the club on a schedule that fits the quarterly review calendar.
My assistant has a recurring block in March, June, September, and December.
She calls them "personal development sessions. "
My slick is just starting. Head still clear enough.
Skin hot like a warm bath—pleasant, familiar, the kind of heat that sits low in my stomach and radiates outward through my hips.
My cock has been half-hard since I walked in, not from the heat, just habit.
Peak is still a little ways off. By then I'll be in a private room with the door locked and someone's mouth on me.
I turn on the stool and let my eyes travel.
There's a rut-riding alpha near the floor, young and loud, showing off for a group of omegas who aren't interested and are only tolerating him because the betas will step in if he crosses a line.
I find him mildly amusing, like a dog barking at its own reflection, and go back to scanning.
A bonded pair in the upper gallery leans into each other in a way that would look sweet if you didn't know better.
Two regulars circle a newcomer in the middle of the floor, slow and deliberate, sharks with good manners.
A beta with a shaved head collects empty glasses from a low table and steps around the pooled slick without looking down.
And at the edge of the floor, near the short hallway to the lockers, there's a young alpha.
He's enormous—six-four, maybe six-five, with shoulders that belong to a man ten years older.
I can't see his face, but I can guess what it looks like from the way he holds his neck.
His mask is crooked, off by about twelve degrees, the elastic pulling his hair into a tuft he hasn't noticed.
Hands very still at his sides—too still, the kind of still that costs effort.
Eyes fixed on the far wall. He's trying so hard to look comfortable that every muscle in his upper body is locked into a fake version of ease.
First time. Obvious. Dominant-presumed—the size, the build, the fact that somewhere in his life several people looked at him and decided a conversation about submission wasn't worth having.
Wants to stop being presumed anything, which is why he's here.
Doesn't know what he wants to be instead, which is why he's against a wall.
And Christ, he's built. Not the showy gym kind—the natural kind that comes from growing up big and just keeping on growing.
Thighs like tree trunks under dark jeans that fit tight across the quads and hang looser at the waist, like he dressed for the body he had at nineteen and hasn't caught up.
A plain black t-shirt stretched across his chest in a way that's either accidental or just unlucky, but either way it works.
His forearms alone would make him look like a better alpha from a distance than half the men here, and he doesn't even realize it.
He's the only alpha on the main floor still wearing a shirt.
The rest have their pecs and abs out like a line of fraternity pledges hoping to be picked.
That's the unspoken rule of the club; new members usually catch on within ten minutes.
He hasn't. Either he doesn't know the custom, or he's self-conscious about his body.
I already know which. A body like that doesn't hide behind a t-shirt by accident.
I catch just a hint of his scent from here, threading through the heavy air. Warm and unguarded—the kind of scent that would embarrass him if he knew what he was giving away. Fresh bread and sun. God help him.
Something shifts low in my gut. My slick amps up—not a trickle anymore, a real warmth pooling between my cheeks, and I clench against it instinctively.
My cock firms from half-interested to fully hard in the space of a breath, straining against the flat front of my slacks, and the shift from I am going to fuck someone tonight to I am going to fuck him tonight happens in my body before it reaches my mind.
I enjoy that—the animal recognition of it, the way my hole clenches again, hungry, before I've even thought a full sentence about what I want to do to him.
My mouth tips up.
One more sip of gin. Set the glass down. Push off the stool.
I cross the floor without hurrying. I never hurry here.
The crowd parts easily because people know me and I look like I know where I'm going.
Someone calls out; I lift a hand without turning my head.
The alpha sees me coming when I'm still ten feet out.
He registers me, visibly decides I must be headed somewhere behind him, and looks back at the far wall. His jaw tightens. He knows.
I stop beside him, shoulder to his bicep.
He smells even better close up—and also like nerves.
Eager and anxious at once, like something sweet burning.
Under that, a low hum of something that's going to ripen into a real alpha signature in another hour or two if he gets comfortable enough to let it.
Rut-adjacent, maybe. Hard to tell this early and I don't bother trying.
"You look like you could use a tour guide."
He jumps. Actually jumps—a small full-body startle—then his head whips down toward me. I'm not small; he's just very large. His mouth drops open behind the mask.
"Oh—um, yeah, actually, yeah, I, uh—is it that obvious?"
It's not the voice I expected. I thought it would be low and rumbling, the kind of voice people imagine for someone who looks like him. Instead it still hasn't settled. It wants to crack under pressure, and it speeds up when he's nervous, which he is right now.
"First time?"
"Yeah. Yeah. How can you tell?"
"Your mask is on crooked, sweetheart."
Both hands go to it at once—enormous hands, and I see them clearly for the first time. They're shaking. He fumbles with the strap and makes it worse. A small, frustrated sound escapes him, almost a whimper. I hum something pleased in my throat, though he can't hear it over the bass.
"Here." I step in front of him. Reach up—really up—and put my fingers on the edge of his mask.
He goes rigid—not just still but rigid, like I've put my hand on something dangerous and he's afraid of what he'll do if he moves.
I fix the angle, smooth the elastic into his hair, and let my fingertips drag through it on the way down. Soft. Baby fine. "There. Better."
"Thank you." He says it like I've done something important. "Thank you. God, I—thank you."
"You're welcome."
I take a half step back. Let him look at me. I'm used to being looked at by alphas twice my size—the way their eyes travel down, confused, recalculating. It's one of my favorite parts of the evening.
"Is there—" He swallows. "Are there, like, rules I should—I read the rules, I read them twice, but—"
"You read the rules, honey. You know the rules."
"Right. Yeah. Right, okay."
"What's your name?"
His mouth opens. Closes. He remembers. "We don't."
"Very good. What can I call you tonight?"
He hadn't thought about this. I watch him try to come up with something. The panic of a six-five alpha trying to pick a fake name at a sex club is genuinely delightful.
"Um. Theodore. I mean—Teddy? People call me Teddy."
Of course they do.
