To Cast a Shadow Prologue

“I need to tell you, Detective, that it was me. I did it. I killed the two women they found.”

He confessed before I’d even sat down opposite him, my coffee still in my hand, and the solicitor next to him sitting up so straight I thought he might’ve had a broom-handle up his back.

“I can give you the details of how and where. I’m sure you’ll need them.”

I sat down, smoothing the shirt I’d put on. It was a mistake; by now it was one big crease, and no amount of smoothing was going to make me look any more presentable.

“Detective, I’m not sure you’re listening to me. Did you hear what I said?” His hand slammed down the table between us.

“Oh, I heard, Mr Devlin. There’s a small problem though.” I stopped trying to smooth it.

“And what’s that, Detective Sergeant McAllister? What is this problem?”

“It’s quite straightforward. I don’t believe you.”
