Epilogue #2

Elias chuckled too, the tension between them easing.

“I’ll be fine,” he said, his tone lighter now. “Besides, if anyone can keep Whitaker in line, it’s you.”

Angela’s cheeks flushed, but she smiled. “I’ll do my best.”

They began walking back toward camp, their steps slower now, their conversation shifting to lighter topics. By the time they returned, the faint awkwardness of the moment had faded, replaced by the easy camaraderie they’d always shared.

Angela watched Elias wander off to join the others, her heart heavy but certain. She’d been honest with him, and he’d taken it with the grace she’d come to expect from him.

But as her gaze shifted toward the wagon where James stood talking with Toby, she felt her heart quicken again.

She was in love with James Whitaker. Truly, deeply in love.

A few days later, Angela stood beside Rachel, scrubbing laundry in a basin of soapy water near the creek.

The repetitive motion was soothing, though Angela couldn’t shake the feeling that Rachel was unusually chatty today.

“And that’s when I told him,” Rachel was saying, her voice animated as she recounted one of her stories. “If he thought I was going to let him charge me double for a new axle, he’d better think again!”

Angela smiled faintly, glancing up from the shirt she was scrubbing. “Sounds like you gave him a piece of your mind.”

“Oh, I did,” Rachel said, her hands moving briskly through the laundry. “But enough about me. How are things with you and James?”

Angela’s cheeks warmed at the sudden question. “Fine,” she said quickly, ducking her head.

Rachel raised an eyebrow, her grin sly. “Just fine?”

Angela tried not to smile, but the corners of her mouth betrayed her. “Better than fine.”

Rachel laughed. “I knew it. He’s a good man, Angela. Stubborn as a mule sometimes, but good.”

Angela nodded, her thoughts drifting to James as she wrung out the shirt in her hands. She’d never imagined feeling this way—this light, this full of hope.

Rachel stood suddenly, wiping her hands on her skirt. “I think that’s enough for now. Why don’t we head back to camp?”

Angela frowned, glancing at the pile of wet clothes still in the basin. “But we haven’t finished—”

“It’ll keep,” Rachel said breezily, already gathering her things. “Come on.”

Still puzzled, Angela followed Rachel back toward camp. As they approached, she noticed something unusual—the camp seemed quieter than usual, almost… expectant.

The moment they stepped into the clearing, Angela stopped in her tracks.

The entire camp was gathered in a wide circle, and in the center stood James, looking more handsome than ever in his clean shirt and neatly combed hair. Nearby, someone had set up a small table with a bouquet of prairie wildflowers and a makeshift arch decorated with strips of cloth and greenery.

Angela’s breath caught as realization dawned.

“Rachel,” she whispered, her heart racing. “What’s going on?”

Rachel grinned, giving her a gentle nudge forward. “Go find out.”

Angela’s feet felt like they were moving on their own as she stepped into the circle. James’s eyes met hers, and the soft, steady warmth in his gaze made her chest ache.

“Angela,” he said, his voice low and rich, carrying just enough for everyone to hear.

She stopped a few feet from him, her heart pounding.

James stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate as he dropped to one knee.

Murmurs rippled through the crowd, but Angela barely noticed. Her entire world narrowed to the man in front of her, the earnest expression on his face as he held out a small silver band.

“I never thought I’d find this again,” James said, his voice steady despite the emotion shining in his eyes. “A reason to hope. A reason to believe. But you’ve given me both, Angela. You’ve given me a home in a way I never thought possible.”

Angela’s throat tightened, tears pricking her eyes as she listened.

“I love you,” James said simply, the words grounding her in a way nothing else ever had. “And I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”

For a moment, she was too overwhelmed to speak, her hand covering her mouth as she tried to process everything. The warmth of the sun, the soft rustle of the prairie grass, the steady beat of her heart—all of it seemed to fade, leaving only him.

“What if I say no?” she teased, her voice trembling with emotion.

James smirked, tilting his head. “Then these good folks would have wasted their morning for nothing.”

Laughter rippled through the crowd, breaking the tension and making Angela laugh through her tears.

She took a shaky breath, nodding as she reached out to him.

“Of course I’ll marry you.”

A cheer erupted around them as James stood, slipping the ring onto her finger. Before she could say another word, he pulled her into his arms, his lips finding hers in a kiss that felt like the beginning of forever.

As the voices shouted their congratulations, the camp came alive with joy. Angela barely heard them, her heart full to bursting as she looked up at James, his smile as radiant as the sun.

“All right,” Minister Sam said, clasping his hands. “Shall we get this show on the road?”

James grabbed Angela’s hand and led her to the arch.

The camp had gathered close, forming a loose circle around James and Angela, the warmth of their smiles creating an almost tangible sense of joy.

“Dearly beloved,” Minister Sam began, his deep voice steady and warm, “we are gathered here today to witness the union of James Whitaker and Angela Hayes. Out here, on this trail, where life is as rugged and uncertain as the land we cross, we’re reminded every day of God’s blessings.

Through trials, through hardships, through moments of doubt, He is always with us, just as He has brought these two together. ”

A hush fell over the gathering, the occasional chirp of a cricket or the soft rustle of the prairie grass the only sounds.

Minister Sam’s gaze swept over the crowd before returning to the couple standing before him. As he spoke the opening words of the blessing, Angela’s gaze wandered briefly over the faces of those gathered around them.

There was Rosie, her expression warm and full of pride, her hands clasped in front of her as if she could hardly contain her joy.

Rachel stood beside them, dabbing discreetly at her eyes with a handkerchief.

For all her sharp wit and independent spirit, Rachel’s emotions were worn on her sleeve today, making Angela’s heart swell.

Toby stood off to one side, his arms crossed over his chest and a rare grin tugging at his weathered face. His eyes twinkled with something like pride, and Angela thought of how much he’d meant to James—how much he meant to all of them.

Thomas and Lucy were there, standing arm in arm, their bond unshakable after all they’d endured. Thomas nodded at her when their eyes met, his quiet strength a steadying presence. Lucy wriggled excitedly, her small hand gripping his, and she beamed at Angela like a little ray of sunshine.

Elias stood at the back, his eyes kind as they met hers.

Angela felt her breath hitch, her heart swelling as she took in these people—her family, not by blood but by bond. Each of them had been a part of her journey, had shaped her life in ways she couldn’t begin to express.

Her gaze drifted back to James, who was watching her with an intensity that made her cheeks flush. In his eyes, she saw everything—love, devotion, and the promise of the future they would build together.

“This trail we travel is long and hard,” Minster Sam continued, his voice carrying the weight of his years.

“There are storms and rivers to cross, and the way is not always clear. But just as we rely on each other to keep moving forward, so too do James and Angela commit to walking this road together, hand in hand, leaning on one another and on the Lord. It’s a promise not only to love but to endure, to hope, and to find joy even in the hardest of times. ”

Angela’s throat tightened, her chest full to bursting as she glanced at James. His eyes were steady, warm and unwavering as they met hers, and she felt strength flow through her like a prayer answered.

Minister Sam nodded toward James. “James Whitaker, do you take Angela Hayes to be your lawfully wedded wife? To love her, to honor her, and to cherish her in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, for as long as you both shall live?”

James’s voice was deep and sure, his gaze never leaving Angela’s.

“I do.”

Minister Sam turned to Angela, his kind eyes twinkling.

“And do you, Angela Hayes, take James Whitaker to be your lawfully wedded husband? To love him, to honor him, and to cherish him in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, for as long as you both shall live?”

Angela’s voice trembled, but it was filled with quiet conviction.

“I do.”

“Now,” Minister Sam said, his expression softening, “James has prepared vows of his own.”

James inhaled deeply, his voice thick with emotion as he began.

“Angela,” he said, his voice steady but low, “before I met you, I thought the best of my life was behind me. I thought I’d lost my chance at joy, at love, at believing in something bigger than myself.

But you… you’ve shown me what it means to hope again.

To trust. To have faith again. I promise to stand by you, to protect you, to love you with all that I am.

On this trail and every trail after, wherever it may lead. ”

Angela blinked back tears, her hands trembling slightly as she held his.

“Angela,” Minister Sam said. “I know you haven’t had time to prepare anything, but if there is something you would like to say?”

Angela nodded and took a breath, her voice soft but steady as she spoke.

“James, you’ve taught me that love is brave, that it’s something worth fighting for, even when it’s scary.

You’ve given me a home when I thought I’d never have one again.

I promise to walk beside you, to trust you, to love you with all my heart.

On this trail and every trail after, wherever it may lead. ”
