11. Darius #2
"Which means if a corrupt administration manages to leverage a fraudulent archaeological survey to declare a site completely clear of historical value," Darius reasoned, his eyes narrowing as he traced the operational logic, "they can use emergency executive zoning to bypass the local conservation boards entirely.
They acquire an unblemished, protected sanctuary parcel for pennies on the dollar, clear the zoning restrictions from the capital, and build a multi-million-dollar mega-resort in an area where their competitors are legally barred from even driving a tractor. "
"You hit the nail right on the head," Clyde said, his tone grim over the speaker.
"The strict insulation of the island's wealth makes it the perfect ecosystem to launder that type of high-leverage real estate transaction.
If they control the governor's mansion, they control the state preservation board, and the entire coastal sanctuary becomes their private playground. "
"And they make it look like they are saving a small coastal community in the process," Darius said, rubbing his hand over his face. He let out a dark, mirthless laugh, his fingers pressing into his temples as the sheer cynicism of the plan settled in.
"Exactly, it's classic corporate gaslighting," Clyde continued, his tone sharp.
"Back then your parents threw a massive spanner in the works by switching sides.
They decided they wanted to invest directly in George Heart's vision and preserve the Sweet Blossom Bay community rather than help the Winebergs bulldoze it.
Once George and Anna were married and expecting a child, the localized alliances shifted. "
"And the Winebergs' entire predatory plan fell to pieces," Darius stated, his eyes locking onto the architectural blueprints of the bay sitting on his desk. “Both their legal and illegal business fronts did not come to light.”
"It all went quiet from the Winebergs for a while," Clyde said, a paper rustling over the line as he toggled between historical land deeds. "The administrative ban kept their front companies dead in the water. Then you stepped onto the island and bought the beach house property."
"And the market indicators flared back to life," Darius realized, a sudden chill settling deep in his chest. "The moment I started aggressively trying to acquire the hotel registry to protect it, they panicked.
Thompson Wineberg Junior suddenly restarted his gubernatorial campaign, Dr. Debbi Wineberg is dispatched to the island with a falsified survey crew, and it is all systems go for them again. "
"Yes, because according to their recent corporate audit reports, the Winebergs are struggling severely," Clyde explained.
"Well, not struggling like everyday people, but for a dynasty accustomed to unchecked political influence and high-leverage lending lines, their level of financial stress is catastrophic.
They have overextended their credit structures across three separate legacy developments in the Carolinas, and they are bleeding cash trying to fund a statewide political campaign. "
“Because they’ve done this before,” Darius leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk.
"It means they would be completely prepared for any incoming findings of historical significance down at the pool basin.
If Owen and Anna validate that Calusa settlement, the Winebergs won't just try to ignore it.
They'll actively bury it, use Thompson's pending executive powers to rewrite the state preservation guidelines, and force a commercial seizure under the guise of municipal redevelopment. "
He stared out at the mangrove channels, his jaw setting into a hard, rigid line.
The fight for Sweet Blossom Bay was no longer just about protecting the Heart’s legacy or Sweet Blossom Bay or outmaneuvering a rival developer.
It was a race against a desperate, cornered dynasty that was willing to break every law in the state to build their empire on top of George Heart's legacy.
Because they needed to reopen their not so legitimate business and would take pleasure in crushing George Heart in the process.
Darius wondered if there was more to the George and Hyrum story. He shook the thought off. There was no time to ponder if he needed to look into that part of this he’d do it when necessary.
"They could potentially take over Florida's illegal business dealings while looking squeaky clean," Clyde added grimly.
"That won't just ruin Sweet Blossom Bay and Sanibel," Darius stated, his grip tightening around the plastic housing of the phone receiver. "It will bring every bad element there is in this state directly to our shores."
"Yep," Clyde agreed, a heavy sigh traveling over the digital connection. "What do you want me to do next?"
"Carry on digging," Darius said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense authority.
"We have to move with absolute caution from this point forward.
I still have to root out the active mole inside the Wayne Group, because that person has been remarkably clever about covering their tracking footprint.
We need to secure concrete, undeniable evidence of exactly what, where, and why the South Coast Group is coming for Sweet Blossom Bay. "
"Are you still planning to go ahead with your current counter-strategy?" Clyde asked, a distinct note of worry filtering through his words.
"I can't stop now," Darius told him, his jaw setting into a firm line. "The gears are already turning. The process has started."
"Be careful, and call me the exact second you need backup," Clyde told him. "Oh, and for peace of mind, I do have every single other security parameter you asked for already securely in place."
"Thank you, Clyde. I'll be significantly less panicked knowing that the secondary defenses are locked down," Darius said, a faint wave of relief easing the tension in his shoulders.
Before Clyde could respond, a sharp, rhythmic vibration buzzed against Darius’s palm as a text message popped up on his phone screen. He pulled the device away from his ear, his eyes narrowing as he reviewed the short line of text.
Could you meet me at the diner in thirty minutes?
Darius read the words twice, his pulse ticking upward as he recognized the high-leverage nature of the meeting. He lifted the phone back to his ear. "I have to go."
"Where?" Clyde asked instantly, picking up on the sudden shift in his demeanor.
"Fishing," Darius told him, utilizing their private shorthand for tracking a high-value lead.
"Be careful," Clyde warned him, his tone turning entirely serious. "Stick to the established plan in every single detail, because everything on our end has been meticulously set up."
"Don't worry," Darius assured him, his boots already pivoting toward the office door. "I won't deviate from the parameters. I have my watch on."
"Keep me posted," Clyde made him promise. "I'll call you the second the corporate asset trace yields anything else."
They hung up the line, the small office falling into a heavy quiet. Darius set the phone down on the mahogany surface, took a long, steadying breath, and walked through the side corridor toward his bedroom to go put on a change of clothes.
Time for phase two of the plan. When he was on his way out the front door he took out his phone and typed a message: Contact has been made and I’m on my way there now.
Dots appeared as the message was read right away. Darius couldn’t help but smile and his heart gave a crazy little flip when the message came on the screen.
Contact: Be careful. Keep me posted. Do you want me to call ahead for you?
Darius: It’s okay. It’s already taken care of. Oh and if you see shadows, don’t worry they’re from my clouds.
Contact: Thank you for providing the shade. It’s getting really hot here lately.
Darius: Make sure everyone stays out of the sun.
Contact: I will. Send me a message when you’re finished.
Darius: I will.
He opened the garage and climbed into his car.
“Let the games begin,” Darius muttered, pulling out of his driveway.
