9. Goldie

NINE

The next morningdawned bright and clear as Fenris and I set off from the minotaur farm, our sights set on the nearest port town in search of a ship and crew for hire. With Tumble perched on my shoulder and the picnic basket containing the Source Stone slung over my arm, we made our way through the Enchanted Grove, the sounds of the forest coming alive around us.

I couldn”t help but marvel at how quickly Fenris was healing from his injuries, his strength and vitality returning with each passing moment. As we walked, I found myself stealing glances at him, unable to shake the sense of awe that filled me at the sight of him.

”Feeling better?” I asked, unable to resist teasing him as we walked.

Fenris nodded, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. ”Much better, thank you,” he replied, his voice gruff with embarrassment.

I grinned at his reaction, enjoying the way he squirmed under my teasing gaze. ”You know,” I said playfully, ”I think I might have a talent for healing after all.”

To my surprise, Fenris” response was not what I had expected. Instead of his usual stoic demeanor, he let out a low chuckle, the sound sending a shiver down my spine. ”Perhaps you do,” he said, his voice laced with amusement. ”Or perhaps it”s just the magic of your presence.”

I felt my cheeks flush at his words, my heart fluttering in my chest. But before I could respond, I caught sight of something out of the corner of my eye that made me burst into laughter.

Fenris looked at me in confusion, his brow furrowed in bewilderment. ”What”s so funny?” he asked, his tone curious.

I pointed to his tail, which was wagging back and forth behind him like an overexcited puppy. ”Your tail,” I managed to say between giggles. ”It”s wagging.”

Fenris” eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was referring to, his cheeks turning a deep shade of crimson. ”I-I can explain,” he stammered, his embarrassment evident.

But before he could say anything else, Tumble let out a squeaky laugh from my shoulder, its tiny voice filled with amusement. ”It”s adorable,” the little creature chirped, its eyes twinkling with mischief.

I couldn”t help but agree as I watched Fenris” embarrassment deepen, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. I felt a sudden surge of boldness wash over me. Without a second thought, I reached out and gently took Fenris” hand in mine, the warmth of his touch sending a jolt of electricity coursing through me.

And then, before I could second-guess myself, I leaned in and pressed my lips to his, the world around us fading away as we shared a brief, but electrifying, moment of connection. His lips were soft against mine, and for a heartbeat, time seemed to stand still.

When we finally pulled away, I could see the surprise and longing reflected in Fenris” eyes, mirroring my own emotions. ”Goldie,” he whispered, his voice barely above a breath.

But before he could say anything else, I placed a finger against his lips, silencing him. ”No need to say anything,” I said softly, a smile playing at the corners of my lips.

As we approachedthe port town, a cacophony of sounds assaulted our ears, mingling together in a chaotic symphony of shouts, laughter, and the clinking of tankards. The streets were alive with activity, bustling with a colorful array of characters straight out of a magical pirate movie.

Weaving our way through the throngs of sailors and traders, we passed rowdy taverns adorned with weathered signs depicting fierce sea monsters and swashbuckling pirates. The air was thick with the smell of salt and sea breeze, mixed with the tantalizing aroma of freshly cooked seafood drifting from bustling market stalls.

Everywhere I looked, there was movement and noise, the port town alive with the energy of sailors returning from sea voyages and merchants haggling over exotic goods from distant lands. It was a world unto itself, a place where magic and adventure intertwined in the most unexpected of ways.

As we navigated through the rowdy port town, we couldn”t help but attract the attention of some particularly boisterous sailors who had clearly indulged in one tankard too many. With a raucous cheer, they stumbled towards us, their eyes alight with mischief and merriment.

”Hey there, sweetheart,” one of the sailors slurred, his breath heavy with the scent of ale. ”Fancy a drink with a couple of fine lads like us?”

I felt Fenris tense beside me, his jaw clenched tightly as he bristled with barely-contained anger. With a low growl, he flicked his hand dismissively, sending the sailors flying backwards as if they were nothing more than mere pests.

The sailors stumbled to the ground with a series of yelps and curses, their drunken laughter quickly turning to shock and disbelief. But before they could recover, Fenris loomed over them, his gaze dark and menacing.

”Stay away from her,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. ”She”s mine.”

I felt a shiver run down my spine at the intensity of Fenris” words, the possessiveness in his tone sending a thrill of excitement coursing through me. For a moment, I was rendered speechless by the raw power and protectiveness he exuded.

But as I looked into Fenris” eyes, I saw something else there, something tender and vulnerable beneath the surface. And in that moment, I knew that I had found something truly special in this fierce and enigmatic werewolf who had come into my life so unexpectedly.

With a smile tugging at the corners of my lips, I reached out and gently took Fenris” hand in mine, squeezing it reassuringly.

As we walked away from the scene, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within me, I couldn”t help but feel a sense of surprise at my own reaction to Fenris” protectiveness and possessiveness. As an independent woman who had always prided myself on my strength and self-reliance, I should have been angry at his presumption.

And yet, as I looked at Fenris, his eyes still smoldering with the intensity of his earlier display, I felt something stir deep within me. Maybe it was the way he had stood up for me, the way he had fought to keep me safe, or maybe it was the undeniable connection that pulsed between us, drawing us together like magnets.

Whatever it was, I found myself strangely drawn to him, a part of me secretly reveling in his possessive growls and protective gestures. It was a side of myself I hadn”t known existed, a part of me that craved the security and stability that Fenris offered.

As we continued on our journey through the bustling port town, I couldn”t shake the feeling that maybe being Fenris” mate wouldn”t be so bad after all.
