Prologue
“Oma, I’m so sorry.”
If I had a fucking million dollars for every time I heard that over the last few weeks, I’d be set for life. How could someone’s life go so wrong so quickly? Was I an evil person in a previous life? That had to be it.
I shove more clothes into my suitcase, ready to be done with this life and find another.
FAST.
“This is all my fault. Please don’t take the blame.” He couldn’t fucking be serious.
“Oh, I know it’s your fault. My dick didn’t fall into another woman.” I slam the suitcase shut and spin to face my ex-fiancée.
The one I came home to cry to when I learned my school was being shut down and my paid internship was now gone. Instead, I walked in on him balls deep in his ‘cousin,’ or so his family led me to believe when they introduced me to her last weekend.
“I never meant for this to happen.” I scoff and grab my bags.
“I’m sure you never meant to get caught. How long has your family been lying to my face for you? You know what, never mind. I don’t fucking care! Move,” He blocks the doorway with a look of pleading that I’m not used to seeing on him.
“You can’t just leave.” I let the hysteria I’m feeling bubble out in a manic laugh that even scares me.
“Watch me.” I shove into him, and before his body can move, the door behind him explodes.
“NYPD! GRANT ROSENFELD, YOU ARE UNDER ARREST!” I look on dumbfounded as the last shards of my life crumble.
Turns out his lying, cheating ass was involved in a gambling ring, and as I answer questions about our relationship, finances, and my knowledge of his illegal activities, I realize I’m being reduced to nothing but a shell of the woman I thought I was.
“Ma’am, are you okay?” A police officer holding my only belongings, which are now evidence, asks as if he could offer me help.
“No, but I will be.”
