Chapter Eight #2
Arriving back at the house at lunch, he made his way into the kitchen and found Harper sitting at one of the counters but slumped over it.
At first glance, it reminded him of how he found his parents, slumped over their food, looking asleep, and yet they had been dead to the world from the poison his wife had given them.
He rushed to Harper’s side, cupping her face, and she opened her eyes and groaned.
“Crap, what time is it?” she asked.
Her face was pale, and he saw the sweat across her brow.
“It’s lunchtime. What’s going on? What happened?”
Harper let out a little laugh. “I don’t think I got a lot of sleep last night, or I am coming down with something.
It could be one of those two. I’m not sure.
But I was so tired, and I thought I would have a coffee and just take a moment.
Only, is it me, or is the coffee, like, off?
It keeps making me want to throw up. So, I went without the coffee, but then I was so tired, and I need the caffeine to stay awake. ”
“What you need to do is rest.”
“I must be coming down with something, right? Coffee is heaven, and it tastes so good. I rarely get ill, but it can always happen.”
He helped her off the stool, not taking no for an answer.
Harper worked herself to the freaking bone.
She struggled with the fact he was a Capo and she was a cleaner, but he didn’t give a flying fuck.
Status and class and all that shit could stay in history.
It had no place here. He carried her up to his bedroom and lowered her to the bed.
She looked absolutely exhausted, and he had a sneaking suspicion she didn’t even realize she was pregnant.
“I’m going to call a doctor. You just rest.”
“No, no doctor. They tend to just tell me I’m fat.” She wrinkled her nose. “He’ll probably think I’m lazy and I’ve eaten too much.”
He was going to ignore that.
Harper was already curling up and falling asleep. Leaving his bedroom, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Kent.
The good doctor answered and agreed to be there in less than thirty minutes. He had no idea how the doctor was able to get to him so quickly. He made his way downstairs, and he couldn’t help but notice that the house looked so clean.
Pulling out his cell phone, he found the link to the security footage, and he rewound it to see what Harper had been up to, and of course, she had worn herself out. She dusted, vacuumed, and ran herself ragged to get the place clean. She didn’t stop from the moment he left.
Kent arrived within the thirty minutes, and Enzo led him upstairs. The doctor had never been anywhere else but in his office. He didn’t like the fact he had to let him into more parts of his home, even though Kent had been nothing but trustworthy. It took a lot for him to trust.
“Before you go in there, you should know that I think she’s pregnant,” Enzo said.
“Does she know?”
“I don’t think she does.”
“Do you want me to tell her?” Kent asked.
“No.”
Kent looked toward the door. “Would you like me to terminate it?”
Enzo frowned and shook his head. “Fuck, no, I don’t want you to do that.” He didn’t want his child killed.
Kent held his hands up. “You’d be surprised how many men would prefer a termination than having little bastards running around.”
The temptation to squeeze the life out of him was strong, but he held himself in check. Killing the doctor for no reason was not ideal.
“I don’t want her to lose the child.” He was aware of the affairs other Capos and men in the Villa Mafia had.
He had no other children. He’d been careful about who he fucked, and he’d never forgotten protection. This was a first for him.
“Would you like me to confirm it for you? I can take a simple blood test, and she wouldn’t have to know what I’m testing for.”
“Do it,” Enzo said.
Kent nodded, and Enzo stepped into the room and watched as Kent checked Harper over. She woke up and was a little groggy, as anyone who had just been sleeping would be. As she spoke to the doctor, she became more alert and the color was back in her cheeks.
“I think he’s worrying for no reason,” Harper said.
“There is a nasty little bug going around, and trust me, it has been knocking people on their ass, but we’ll get some blood, and I will have the results as soon as possible.”
“Don’t you have a clinic we need to go to?”
“Not for this. You and Mr. Castelli get my special treatment.”
For a price. Everything came to him for a price.
Kent took the vials of blood, then he told her to rest and eat something. She was exhausted and needed to hydrate and eat.
Enzo left Harper in bed and showed Kent downstairs. “Were you serious about the bug?”
“There is a nasty bug going around, but I think she is just exhausted and pregnant. I will have the results to you by the end of the day, or tomorrow morning.”
Enzo nodded and paid the man, handing him an envelope full of cash. Kent thanked him and bid him a good day.
Closing the door, he made his way upstairs to find Harper coming back from the bathroom.
“Do I need to spank that ass? You heard what the doctor said, you need to rest.”
“He also mentioned that I need to eat, and the last time I checked, you didn’t cook food.”
Enzo glared at her, but then went to her and picked her up in his arms.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“We’re going to compromise,” he said.
“Compromise?” She held on even tighter, and he had no intention of dropping her, ever.
“Yes, compromise.” He made it to the kitchen without dropping her and placed her ass on the stool. “Tell me how to cook you a meal.”
Her mouth dropped open. “You’re not being real right now.”
“I am. You need to eat and you need to rest. I’m good at following instructions.” He unbuttoned the cuff of his sleeve. All you’ve got to do is tell me what to do.” He winked at her. “Come on, baby, be the boss of me.”
Harper laughed. “I do not for a second think you take orders well, but fine, if you want to be stubborn, you can cook me dinner. I think there’s some chicken in the fridge, and I know I fancy some pesto.” She offered him a smile. “Are you scared yet?”
“Not even close.” He winked at her.
She burst out laughing and that sound was worth it.
