Epilogue - Taylor
Three years later, New Year’s Eve
Looking up at the cute, old-fashioned clock on the wall I realise I have about five more minutes before the cake is ready.
My phone buzzes with a text. It’s Miles.
Hey beautiful, need me to pick anything up for you? Nearly home.
I smile as I text back.
You’re all I need. Cake’s almost ready.
I moved in with Miles a week after we got together at New Year. It was fast but we both knew it was the right thing to do. I was tired of the partying drama at my house share and he was delighted to have me looking after his Grandma’s house with him.
It’s such a sweet house. I haven’t done too much to it, although Miles insisted on buying some new furniture and giving everything a fresh lick of paint.
We sit on the porch swing in the summer and build snowmen in the garden in the winter.
I’ve kept his Grandma’s herb garden going and Paul’s impressed with how I’ve used different herbs I’ve grown to create new and exciting dishes for us to serve.
Of course, Miles was away a lot, but my work and big family kept me busy, and his brother Bobby came to stay with his girlfriend when he was back in Snowflake.
Miles was transferred to the local base on a long-term project and came to live off-base with me.
Our son Oscar was born the following New Year’s Eve, making a special date even more special.
I head upstairs to check on him in his bed. His soft curls are messy and I reach out to smooth them with my hand as he sleeps. Oscar looks so much like his Daddy. He’s going to be so happy when he wakes up and sees his special cake.
The front door closes and I run downstairs.
Miles is standing there, so big and handsome in his fatigues that it makes my stomach do a backflip. I can’t believe this wonderful man rushes home to me every day and has given me the most perfect little family.
He smiles up at me and holds up a bottle of champagne. “How about a stay-at-home celebration tonight?”
I smile back.
“That would be perfect.”
My New Years just keep getting better, every year.
