10. What Are We Doing? Cameron

Chapter ten

What Are We Doing? Cameron

I went out of my way to drive by the brewery before work and tuck a sweet note behind Everett’s windshield wiper that said Thinking of you.

He needed to know I wasn’t only after a hookup or something.

I genuinely wanted to get to know him, but he’d put the brakes on pretty quickly the night before, so maybe he thought I was playing him, but that was far from the case.

If I just wanted sex, I could go to Sacramento.

I was already invested in him and his well-being, a lot more than I probably should have been, having only known him for about a week or so.

At lunchtime, I shot him a text.

Then I went back to work. We were finishing up the framing for an addition, and I didn’t want to lag behind any of the others.

“Cam, dude. Can you come over here and help me with this beam?” My uncle, who was also the boss for this job, waved me over.

It didn’t take long, and the rest of the afternoon went by fast. We wrapped up and cleaned the jobsite, then I checked my messages before cranking up my truck. There weren’t any. Huh.

I didn’t hear back from him, so I stopped by the diner and picked up a to-go meal. Hope he likes fried chicken. I figured that would keep the best. By the time I arrived at the brewery, my truck smelled delicious, making my stomach growl, but this batch was for Everett.

As I suspected, his car was in the parking lot, so I went to the front door and pushed it open, stepping into a nice reception area, but there wasn’t anyone behind the counter. “Hello?”

Conroy Selzby walked out from the back. “Cameron?”

“Hey, Conroy. Didn’t know you were working here.”

Conroy grew up with my younger cousins and, last I heard, was attending online college, hoping to get out of here after earning his degree.

I couldn't blame him for that and actually admired him for having the courage to try—courage I lacked. “Yeah. Mr. Lundy gave me a part-time job.” He thumbed over his shoulder. “He’s super busy and needed the help.”

“That’s great. And where is Mr. Lundy now?”

“In his office, working on the books. Said not to disturb him, but man, he works too much.”

“Hmm…” The need for Operation Relax was growing every day. I put the chicken box on the counter. “Well, give him this if he ever peeks his head out.”

“For sure, Cam.”

“Later.” I waved and took off. I was already beginning to see a pattern with Everett. It went work, work, work, and work. That was never going to, for lack of a better word, work. At least not long-term.

I texted him again, letting him know I’d dropped off food and went home.

I was determined to get Everett interested in anything outside the brewery, even if he wasn't interested in dating me.

He was way too focused on business and needed more fun in his life.

That was now part two of my mission. Fun-er-ize Everett!
