The plane banked low over the water and I saw the city before I heard Grisha say anything about it, red roofs stacked up a hillside like something poured rather than built, a river wide and pale gold in the late light, a bridge strung across it that looked, from that height, like something a child had drawn with a ruler and too much confidence. Three years married and I still hadn't gotten used to the particular vertigo of watching him plan something for weeks without a single word of warning, and then simply handing me the result the way other men hand over a grocery list.
