EPILOGUE A New Dawn
POV: Maya (with Julian present)
Flashbulbs popped in rhythm with the chatter of three hundred patrons, art critics, and investors filling the high-ceilinged gallery.
Two years ago, I stood in the background of nights like this, carrying a forgotten glass of champagne and playing the dutiful, invisible wife to a man who looked right through me.
Tonight? The name on the wall at the entrance read The Vance Heritage Foundation.
Mine. My vision, my work, my legacy.
I took a sip of dark red wine, feeling the cool weight of the microphone in my palm. I’d just wrapped my opening speech, and the roar of applause still echoed off the exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling glass. I felt radiant. Grounded. Powerful.
Scanning the bustling crowd, my eyes landed on the tall, sharp-jawed man standing near the back, leaning against a marble pillar with his hands tucked casually into his tailored suit pockets.
Julian.
He wasn't hovering. He wasn't barking orders or trying to take over the room. He didn't come as the corporate mogul who owned the city, nor as the brooding alpha trying to stake his claim over a woman who used to run his life. He was just here for me.
For twenty-four months, Julian had earned every single inch of his place in my life.
Not through grand, empty gestures or buying off my problems, but through the quiet, steady grind of proving he could be a true partner.
He showed up when the cameras weren't rolling.
He listened when I raged about budget cuts.
He stood as my shield without ever stealing my spotlight.
As if sensing my gaze, his dark eyes snapped directly to mine.
A slow, breathtaking smirk played on those sharp lips—the kind of look that still made my heart do a traitorous, delicious drop straight into my stomach.
He pushed off the pillar and began threading his way through the crowd toward me.
Even in a room packed with heavy hitters, Julian Thorne stood out like a force of nature.
Powerful, gorgeous, and terrifyingly devoted.
"You completely owned that room, sweetheart," he murmured, his deep, gravelly voice washing over me as he stopped just inches away. His hand slid around my waist, his warm palm pressing against the small of my back in a gesture that was equal parts protective and wildly possessive.
I leaned into his side, enjoying the solid, familiar heat of him. "You sound surprised, Thorne. Didn't you know who you were dealing with?" "Oh, I knew," he chuckled, his thumb lightly tracing a slow circle through the thin fabric of my gown. "I just like watching you prove it to everyone else."
He dipped his head down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, sending a liquid heat rushing straight down my spine. "You look dangerous tonight, Maya. It’s taking every ounce of my self-control not to pull you into the private office and lock the door."
I let out a soft laugh, resting my hand against his broad chest, feeling the steady, heavy thud of his heart underneath my palm. "Behave yourself. We have ten more minutes of mingling before we can leave."
"Ten minutes," he growled playfully, his dark eyes flashing with that intense, primal hunger he only ever reserved for me. "I’m counting down every second."
When the event finally wound down and the last of the guests filtered out into the cool city air, Julian grabbed my coat, draping it gently over my shoulders.
He didn't ask for a driver. He held my hand, lacing his long fingers firmly through mine as we stepped out onto the granite steps of the gallery.
The night air was crisp, the city lights buzzing around us like a electric halo. Two years ago, I walked out of a cold marriage with a single suitcase and a broken heart, terrified of the blank slate in front of me.
Now, I looked at the man holding my hand. He wasn't my savior, and I wasn't his consolation prize. We weren't tied together by duty, guilt, or legal contracts. We were here because we chose each other. Every single day.
Julian pulled me flush against his chest right there on the sidewalk, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist. He looked down at me, his eyes overflowing with a raw, undeniable reverence that hit me right in the center of my chest.
"Ready to go home, Mrs. Vance?" he asked, his lips hovering an inch from mine.
"Only if you're coming with me, Mr. Thorne," I whispered back, a wicked little smile curving my lips.
He didn't bother answering with words. He leaned down and captured my mouth in a deep, fiery kiss that tasted like victory, freedom, and a love that had finally found its way home.
