Chapter 6

SIX

Christian

I leave Quinn’s room to see what Melanie needs and am surprised to find her with a few of the guys from Midnight Haven in the lobby.

“What’s happened?” I ask, rushing to them.

“No sign of whoever shot your mate,” Abe tells me.

My mouth curls up in a snarl.

“Yeah, my thoughts exactly,” Reyes agrees. “We called in a few of the guys. Logan, Knox, and Cooper are out there now. We haven’t heard back yet, but I doubt they’ve found anything we missed.”

“We’re having a meeting tomorrow morning at the cabin,” Russo says.

“I’ll try to make it.”

Abe looks past me down the hall. “How’s your mate?”

“She’s good. Healing.”

“We heard a rumor about a female patient escaping,” Reyes says, biting back a smile.

“Yeah, she took a little walk,” I snap.

He tries to hide his laughter with a cough.

Russo narrows his gaze on me. “Does she know?”

I understand what he’s asking. “I just told her.”

“Is that why she was running?” Reyes asks.

“Yep.”

Reyes smirks. “So, you did a great job of explaining it.”

I glare at him. “I can’t wait for you to find your fated mate. I’ll enjoy watching you explain all this to your girl,” I bark.

“I’ll be sure to come to you for some tips,” he snaps.

“We’ll put security outside,” Abe says.

I frown. “She won’t run again.”

“Not because of your mate,” Abe elaborates. “Right now, we don’t know why she was shot or if she was the intended victim. But if she was, she needs protection.”

“We should ask her a few questions. See if we can find out if someone was targeting her for some reason,” Russo adds.

We’ll find out, my wolf growls.

“I’ll ask her. She seems genuinely confused about why she was shot, so I doubt they were after her,” I explain.

They all nod, looking grim.

“In that case, we have someone out there shooting at random people.” Abe says what we’re all thinking.

We’re silent for a minute, grappling with that disturbing fact.

“It could’ve been an accident,” Russo says finally. “A dumb kid out practicing or something. Maybe he missed and panicked.”

“We would’ve seen them running away,” I point out.

“Maybe they were further away than we thought,” Reyes suggests. “It would’ve been a hell of an unlucky shot, but it’s worth checking out.”

We agree that we have to tell the Alphas and Jameson about our new theory and come up with a new plan.

“We’ll need more patrol teams. If this wasn’t an unlucky shot by a kid, it has to be the cult,” Russo says.

I grind my teeth. “Agreed. I need to stay here for the next few days and look after my mate.”

“We’ll manage without you. Don’t worry about that,” Abe reassures me. “Just focus on your mate.”

“Thanks, guys. Keep me updated. I’ll try to be there tomorrow morning for the meeting.”

Abe claps me on the back. “Will do. Get back to your mate.”

“Yeah, good luck, man,” Reyes adds.

“I’ll be outside. I’m up first on security,” Russo says.

“Thanks, man.”

“Of course,” he replies. “Let me know if you need anything.”

I nod. “I’ll talk to you guys later.”

Once they’ve left, I head back to my mate’s room.

Now we need to convince her to give us a shot, my wolf says, pacing inside me.

I sigh. I think that’s going to be easier said than done.
