Chapter 17
The approach to the mine came with dawn light filtering through the jungle canopy in thin shafts that made the Cagayan Valley look peaceful.
Raven sat in the driver’s seat of the lead SUV and watched the road ahead. Peaceful and safe were two entirely different things.
They'd been driving for six hours through increasingly remote terrain. Paved roads gave way to gravel, and gravel gave way to packed dirt. Civilization fell behind them, kilometer by kilometer, until there was nothing but jungle and mountains.
The mine was another two kilometers ahead, according to Ring's coordinates. Close enough that they should be staging now. Moving on foot. Silent approach.
Except—
"We're being watched," Dan said quietly from beside her.
She felt it, too. The prickling awareness that came from operational instinct and years of staying alive by noticing things before they became problems.
"How long?" she asked.
"Last fifteen minutes. Maybe longer."
Ring's voice crackled in her ear. The new comms device Dan was wearing integrated seamlessly with the team network. "I can’t confirm, but I'm picking up movement in the tree line paralleling your route. They may be tracking you."
Raven's hands stayed steady on the wheel. "Options?"
"Abort and reposition," Ring said. "Or proceed knowing you've lost tactical surprise."
She looked at Dan.
He was scanning the jungle with the kind of attention that missed nothing. "They're herding us. Letting us come in. They want us in the tunnels."
"Why?"
"Because underground is defensible. Limited exits. Known terrain for them. Unknown for us." He paused. "It's what I'd do."
Fury's voice came through the comms, gruff and certain. "Raven, you have eyes on the ground. It’s your call."
She thought about it for three seconds.
They'd come too far. Gathered too much intelligence. Staged too carefully. The Scroll knew someone was coming, though; that much was clear. Aborting now just meant Alexei would relocate, and they'd spend more time tracking him down.
Or he'd come for them first.
"We proceed," she said. "Everyone stays sharp. Assume hostile contact the moment we enter the facility. No one goes anywhere alone. Dead ends mean you fight your way back. Understood?"
Acknowledgments came through the comm one by one. Phantom's voice carried a hint of approval. "Knew you'd say that. Good. I was getting bored."
"You're always bored," Demon said.
Phantom frowned, "And your point?"
The road curved ahead. The jungle opened slightly, and there it was, the mine entrance. Old. Weathered. The kind of industrial ruin that looked like it had been abandoned decades ago and left to rot.
Except it hadn't been abandoned.
The main shaft entrance had been reinforced. New timber supports visible even from a distance. Fresh gravel around the perimeter. Tire tracks leading in and out.
And standing near the entrance, visible and unconcerned, a figure, not in tactical gear.
Waiting.
"Contact," Raven said quietly. "One visible at the entrance. Assume more inside."
"Don’t forget whoever’s in the tree line," Ring said.
Specter's voice came through, calm and precise. "I have eyes on the entrance. Target confirmed. I can drop them before you reach the perimeter."
"Negative," Raven said. "We go in the front door. Let them think they're in control."
She brought the SUV to a stop fifty meters from the entrance. The two vehicles behind her stopped in formation. The team dismounted in practiced silence with weapons ready, formation tight, and every person exactly where they were supposed to be.
The Scroll operative at the entrance didn't move. Just watched them
Cocky.
Or confident he … no, she … had the advantage.
Probably both.
Raven walked toward her with her team at her back and her weapon in her hands. She knew whatever happened in the next thirty seconds would determine how the rest of this went.
Twenty meters.
Fifteen.
Ten.
The Scroll operative raised her hand.
"You must be Emi," she said. Her English was accented, Russian maybe. "Sensei has been expecting you."
"Really? I couldn’t tell by the welcoming committee in the tree line." The woman’s eyebrows rose, and she glanced toward the trees. “I don’t know anything about that. Sensei Yuki sends his regards. He's looking forward to seeing you again."
Yuki.
Alexei.
He knows I'm here.
She kept her expression neutral. "Where is he?"
The woman smiled. "Inside. Waiting."
"Then let's not keep him waiting."
The woman gestured toward the mine entrance. "By all means. I will be leaving. As an administrator, I’d be in the way." The woman turned and walked in a different direction from where they’d come.
* * *
“Keep your eyes open,” Raven whispered. All weapons were up, and the team entered with the skill of the most well-trained special ops team on the planet.
The descent was immediate and steep. The main shaft angled down into darkness, old mining rails were visible on the floor, and the air recalibrated from jungle heat to underground cool in the space of twenty meters.
Emergency lighting had been strung along the walls. Not much. Just enough to see.
Just enough to know where you were going.
But not enough to see what was waiting.
“Rook, lights.”
“On it.” Rook moved and cut the line, plunging the shaft into darkness. As one, the team lowered their NVGs. No more tactical advantage for the home team.
The team moved in formation. Raven on point with Dan beside her. Phantom and Jinx behind them. Demon, Rook, and Viper following. Z brought up the rear, already marking positions for demolition charges with the kind of focus that suggested he was having the time of his life.
Specter's voice came through the comms. "I'm in position topside. Overwatch established. Limited sightlines into the facility. The ones in the trees are no longer in the game."
"Copy," Raven said. "Stay sharp."
The tunnel forked ahead. Left and right, both descending and disappearing into a darkness that the NVGs couldn’t penetrate.
Ring's voice crackled. "Based on the mining plans I accessed, the left tunnel leads toward what used to be the primary excavation area. The right tunnel accesses the administrative and equipment sections. Central command is likely deeper, accessed from the primary excavation route."
"Copy," Raven said.
Fury’s voice came over the feed. "Dan, Phantom, Jinx, you take the right fork toward central command.
Find Alexei. Demon, Rook, you clear the barracks and training sections off the primary excavation route.
Z, you're everywhere. Plant charges, create chaos, but don't bring this place down until the team is clear. "
"Understood," Z said cheerfully. "Controlled demolitions. My favorite."
"Viper, you're with Raven. Take the left fork, cut off escape routes, and work back toward the center."
"Copy," Viper said.
Fury continued, "I'm watching your feeds. First sign of trouble, you call it. No heroics."
"Understood," the team said as one as they split.
Dan looked at her for one moment before turning toward the right fork. Something passed between them. Not words, not even a gesture, just the communication of people who'd trained together and knew what the other was thinking.
Then he was gone, disappearing into the right tunnel with Phantom and Jinx while Raven moved left with Viper at her back.
* * *
The left tunnel was a maze.
Ring hadn't been exaggerating. The old mining plans showed a simple network.
Three main routes, a few side passages, logical structure.
But the Scroll had modified it. New tunnels branched off at irregular intervals.
Some looked recent with fresh timber and smooth walls.
Others looked improvised, rough-cut, the kind of thing done quickly without concern for aesthetics.
Raven moved carefully, weapon up, checking corners, cataloging variables. Viper followed three meters back, covering their six, his movements economical and precise.
The emergency lighting flickered on.
Then went out again.
Her night vision reacted immediately to the light surge. Then the world recast into green-tinted clarity again, and the darkness became navigable. She heard Viper's gear adjust behind her. Heard the rest of the team calling status over the comms.
Phantom's voice came through. "Looks like they’re trying to repair the lights."
"Keep cutting the wire as you go," Demon suggested.
"They want to slow us down," Dan said quietly. "Make us more vulnerable."
"Keep moving," Raven said. "Watch for—"
The attack came from a side passage she hadn't seen.
Two Scroll operatives, weapons up, firing before she could fully process they were there.
She dropped and rolled, returning fire, the confined space of the tunnel turning the gunshots into something that echoed and popped against eardrums, making everything difficult. Viper engaged from behind her, his shots precise and controlled.
One Scroll operative went down. The second retreated back into the side passage.
Raven pressed forward, weapon up, clearing the passage.
Empty.
“They're hit and run. Slowing us down. Forcing us to burn time clearing spaces that might be empty. Contact in the left fork," she reported. "Two hostiles, one down, one retreated. We're continuing."
Fury's voice was tight. "Copy. Watch for ambush points."
“No shit.” Raven may or may not have said that in her big person voice as they moved deeper.
The tunnel forked again. Then again. Each choice felt more like a guess than a decision. Ring's mining plans were useless down here. The Scroll had rewritten the entire layout.
A dead end appeared ahead.
Raven stopped. Checked the walls, the ceiling, looking for hidden passages, secondary routes.
Nothing.
"Backtrack," she said quietly to Viper.
They turned.
Their retreat was blocked by four Scroll operatives who'd moved into position behind them while they'd been checking the dead end.
Shit.
The fight was immediate and brutal in the confined space with no room to maneuver. This was when close-quarters combat training mattered more than equipment.
