Chapter 17 #3

He came in again, and this time, there was no testing, no feeling out. Just violence. Pure. Efficient. The kind that came from someone who'd been trained by a master and had spent years refining it into something personal.

Raven matched him.

Strike for strike. Block for block. The confined space of the chamber forced them into close quarters where every mistake was magnified, and every advantage had to be earned.

She landed a solid hit to his jaw that rocked his head back. He responded with an elbow that caught her temple and made the world blur for half a second.

Stay focused.

They traded positions, both looking for the opening that would end it.

Alexei feinted high, went low, swept her legs. She went down hard, rolled, and came up with a knife in her hand.

He smiled.

"There she is. Sensei Kuro's best student."

He drew his own blade.

The fight shifted.

Blade work was different. More lethal. Every exchange carried the weight of permanent consequences. They moved around the chamber, using the space, the support beams, the uneven floor.

Raven felt herself falling into the rhythm of it. The flow state that came from doing what she'd been trained to do since she was twelve years old. Every movement was automatic and instinctive. Her conscious mind stepped back and let training take over.

Alexei was smiling. "I've been waiting for this. Someone who understands. Someone who was shaped by the same hands."

"You corrupted what he taught us."

"I perfected it."

He lunged.

She sidestepped and scored a cut across his forearm. He didn't slow, instead coming back with a combination that forced her into defense, his blade finding her shoulder, cutting through gear and into her flesh.

Burning pain flared. Ignore it. Focus.

They separated again. Both breathing hard. Both bleeding.

Viper was on the ground behind her, conscious, watching, his hand pressed to his thigh. Did he have a weapon? God, she hoped so.

Alexei's smile had faded. "You're better than I thought."

"You talk too much."

She attacked.

Not waiting for him to set the terms. Not giving him space to strategize. Just aggression. Controlled. Precise. The kind that came from years of Guardian operations and, before that, Kuro's brutal training.

She drove him back across the chamber. Landed hits that accumulated to his ribs, shoulder, and face. His defense was solid, but she was relentless. He tried to redirect, use her momentum against her.

She saw it coming. Adjusted mid-strike. Drove a knee into his midsection that folded him slightly.

Then she dropped her knife, grabbed his blade arm, and used a throw that sent him hard into the ground.

She followed him down.

No grace. No elegance. Just brutal efficiency.

They grappled on the chamber floor, both fighting for position, both bleeding, both knowing this was the moment that would decide it.

Raven got her arm around his throat from behind. Full choke. The kind that cut off blood flow and ended fights in seconds if applied correctly.

Alexei fought it. Bucked. Tried to roll. His hand scrabbled for a weapon he'd lost.

She held on.

Kuro taught her this when she was thirteen. Taught her to hold when everything screamed to let go. Taught her that staying in the pain was how you won. Alexei's movements became weaker. Less coordinated.

She transferred her weight, released the choke, and grabbed her knife from where it had fallen nearby.

“You could never beat me. I am the angel of death, and you have been sentenced to die for your sins. Fuck around with innocents and find out what the world will do to you.” In one motion, she pulled his head back and drew the blade across his throat.

The cut was deep, certain, and lethal.

Alexei's hands came up, instinctive, trying to stop what was already done.

She held him while he died. Felt the weight of a life ending. Felt years of Dan’s hunting the Scroll crystallize into this single moment.

When he stopped moving, she let him go and stood.

Raven turned to Viper.

He was still on the ground, hand pressed to his thigh, his face pale but his eyes sharp.

"You good?" she asked.

"Been better. But yeah." He looked at Alexei's body. At her. "Holy shit, Raven."

"Can you walk?"

"With help."

She crossed to him, checked the wound. Through and through. Painful, bleeding, but not arterial. He'd live.

She helped him to his feet. He leaned heavily on her, his weight pressing against her injured ribs in a way that made breathing difficult.

They started moving back toward the tunnel entrance and made it ten meters before two more Scroll operatives appeared from a side passage ahead.

Raven stopped.

Viper couldn't fight. She was holding him up. They were trapped.

The operatives went for their weapons.

Raven lifted her handgun with her free hand and fired. Twice.

Two shots. Two targets. Both dropped.

Viper laughed, though it sounded pained. "You're pretty much over it today, too, huh?"

"Damn straight."

They kept moving as Z announced small demolitions starting. The ground shook under and around them. Dust came down on top of them. She groaned, “Fuck, Z. Give us time.”

“Then get moving!” Z’s reply came with a laugh.
