CHAPTER ELEVEN #2
She unsheathed the ceremonial dagger, the rubies in its hilt glowing like banked coals. I offered my hand, my breath hitching as the blade dragged across my palm. It was a clean, biting line of heat. Red welled instantly, hot and thick.
Asher didn't even blink when she cut him.
His expression remained a mask of silver-eyed focus as our hands were brought together.
The moment our palms met, the slick friction of our mingled blood acted like a conductor.
Jules pressed our joined hands over the rim of the chalice, the droplets falling in a heavy, rhythmic pulse.
She turned to the sacred pit before the towering statue of Ignis and tipped the vessel. The mixture of our blood hit the eternal flame.
It didn't just burn; it detonated.
A column of fire roared upward, turning a blinding, celestial white-gold. The flames twisted into a double helix, dancing with a sentient, roaring approval that shook the very foundations of the temple.
Jules's voice rose above the crackle. "The roots take hold. Through spirit, through blood, through soul—be bound!"
The moment the decree left her lips, it hit me.
A surge erupted from deep within my core, radiating outward like a supernova. It wasn't just a sensation; it was a second pulse. A shadow-dark heartbeat thudding in perfect, agonizing sync beneath my own.
I gasped, my head snapping back as the sheer scale of the intrusion overwhelmed my senses. I had to close my eyes. It was too much.
I could feel him.
Asher wasn't just in front of me anymore; he was in me.
Every fiber of his presence wrapped around my nervous system like electrified wire.
His power danced along my veins, sharp and cold as starlight, clashing beautifully with my own heat.
My body reacted before my mind could—my legs locked tighter around his waist, grounding myself against the sheer force of the merging.
He pulled me flush against his bare chest, one hand sliding up the curve of my spine while the other crushed my bleeding palm against his. I felt the ripple of his muscles, corded and tense with a restraint that felt like it was about to snap.
And then the floodgates opened.
His emotions hit me like a physical wave, nearly drowning my own. A searing flash of raw, unadulterated lust. A hunger so deep it felt ancient. The iron-clad purpose of a protector. And beneath it all... a vast, swirling darkness that felt like the edge of the universe.
My eyes snapped open, searching for him.
His silver eyes had vanished, replaced by pits of pure, bottomless onyx. A void that didn't just reflect the temple fire—it seemed to swallow it whole.
And then, it was gone.
His eyes shifted back to silver—calm, deadly, and breathtakingly beautiful.
My heart was a chaotic forge of fire and shadow. Raw, divine power coursed through my veins like molten gold laced with ink. It burned. It sang. Every nerve ending felt electrified, and gods, I wanted more. I wanted the weight of him, the cold of his magic, the heat of his skin.
I gasped as the force of the merging settled, my head falling back, exposing my throat to the flickering temple light.
I didn't care who was watching. His shadows were a physical presence now, swirling possessively around my legs, cinching my waist, and tracing the curve of my spine.
Our eyes locked, and for the first time, his silver gaze wasn't a mask.
It was feral, wide open, and filled with a desperate, heavy need that mirrored my own.
His hand slipped from mine, but he didn't let go. His blood-slick fingers dragged slowly across the bare skin of my back, leaving a trail of fire I swore I could feel in my very soul.
I pressed my palm flat against his chest, our mingled blood smearing over the hard, heaving plane of his muscle.
His jaw was so tight I thought it might crack, his brow furrowed as he weathered the storm of the bond.
He was feeling everything—every flicker of my pulse, every surge of my magic, every jagged breath.
And then—it settled.
The magic didn't vanish; it simply sank into our marrow. Our breaths were still ragged, our skin glistening with sweat in the humid temple air. The bond had sealed, but we were both trembling in the wake of the collision.
"It is now complete," Jules announced, her voice echoing with a solemnity that felt like a closing door.
Just as the flames in the chalice died to embers, a sharp, biting sting bloomed above my collarbone. It was hot, then ice-cold, then a searing burn like a thousand needles stitching a pattern beneath my skin.
I gasped, looking down.
A soft, golden swirling sigil was etching itself into my flesh, right above my heart.
It shimmered in the firelight, pulsing with a life of its own.
Opposite me, Asher hissed, his hand flying to his own collarbone as the mirrored mark appeared—inked in shadowed black, sharp and coiled like a blade made of eclipsed starlight.
It was a sacred symbol: a ring shaped like a partial eclipse—half sun, half crescent moon—encircling a single, flickering flame.
"By Ignis' flame," Jules whispered with a reverence that bordered on fear. "It's done. The bond has taken root."
Asher looked at me then—truly looked—and for the first time, the arrogance was stripped away. In its place was a terrifying, absolute devotion.
Our marks glowed in a synchronized rhythm, twin sigils of fire and shadow.
Mine pulsed gold. His pulsed black.
We were no longer just two students at the Academy. We were a single, tethered soul.
"Witnesses may now leave the pair alone… with Ignis himself," Jules said, her voice dropping into a respectful hush as she stepped down from the dais. She caught my eye, a small, knowing smile tugging at her lips before she turned and disappeared into the shadows of the nave.
Behind us, the rhythmic shuffle of footsteps echoed—robes whispering against marble, a few hushed murmurs of the witnesses—but I couldn't look back.
I was anchored. The heavy thud of the great temple doors sealing shut vibrated through the floorboards, leaving us in a silence so thick it felt like velvet.
Just the two of us. And the silent, burning judgment of the fire god above.
The braziers crackled, the only sound in the cavernous hall. Asher was still right there, his presence a physical weight. He was so close his breath brushed my lips like a phantom kiss.
"It's you who makes the decisions now, darling," he murmured, his voice a gravelly, low vibration that skipped down my spine. His gaze was unyielding, locked on mine. "I wait on you."
Gods.
My mind was a scorched battlefield, my body molten lead. I felt like I could scream a thousand yeses or shatter into a million golden shards. I was completely, utterly undone.
And then, I laughed.
It wasn't a delicate, royal chuckle. It was a raw, hysterical burst of sound—hand clamped over my mouth, eyes watering—the kind of laugh that only happens when the world becomes too absurd to navigate.
Asher tilted his head, a slow smirk spreading across his face. "Something funny, Princess?"
I exhaled, doubling over slightly as the tension broke in waves of ridiculousness.
"You've finally lost the plot," Aether muttered dryly through the bond.
