CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR #2

"Welcome to my domain, firecracker," he whispered, his voice dropping into that dark, possessive register that always made my blood turn to liquid gold.

He didn't just look powerful; he looked like the apex predator this realm had been waiting for.

The grime on his face and the soot on his leathers only added to the lethal, regal air he carried.

He reached out, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw, wiping away a smear of dried lizard blood.

"In here," he murmured, his gaze flicking to the shifting corridors of the maze behind us, "the shadows don't just hide us. They hunt for us."

I grinned, the lingering sting of Jeremy’s betrayal finally being drowned out by the sheer, exhilarating roar of the bond. I could feel Asher’s strength pouring into me, a steadying, obsidian anchor.

"Then let's give them something to hunt," I said, my own palms flickering with a white-hot spark that looked like a star trapped in the heart of the void.

A low, haunting howl echoed through the maze—the sound of a shadow beast catching our scent. But as Asher’s shadows surged forward to meet the sound, I knew we weren't the ones in danger.

"Ten minutes, right?" I asked, stepping up beside him.

Asher’s grin went wicked, sharp enough to draw blood.

"Ten minutes of them trying to survive us. Stay close, my flame. I want to see you burn in the dark."

The maze groaned as the walls began to shift...

The maze didn't just accept Asher and Zya; it inhaled them.

But the maze was never silent for long.

Asher moved through the oppressive gloom with a fluid, terrifying grace I’d never seen before.

His shadows didn't just follow him—they acted like extra limbs, brushing against the stone walls as if whispering secrets to the maze. Beside him,

Zya was a phantom, her sleek black fur merging so perfectly with the darkness that only her glowing silver eyes remained, tracking threats I couldn't even see yet.

They looked like they belonged here. They looked beautiful, like ancient royalty returning to a forgotten kingdom.

In this world of endless darkness, my fire felt different. It didn't just burn; it bled.

The deep oranges and flickering reds of my flames cut through the suffocating black like a wound, casting long, dancing shadows of us against the obsidian walls.

Every time I looked at Asher, I saw him watching the way the light played across my face with an expression that made my breath hitch.

He leaned in, his voice was a low vibration against my ear.

"See, darling?" he murmured, gesturing to the way my fire pushed back the encroaching void. "This is what you do to my heart. You’re the only light that matters in the dark."

He gave me a slow, devastating grin, and gods, I melted.

After the betrayal in the Earth Realm, after the blood and the bile, his words were the only balm I needed.

I felt so fucking lucky to have him—to be the flame to his shadow.

But the Shadow Realm was never silent for long.

A sudden, cold pressure clamped around my ankle. It wasn't a hand; it felt like a coil of living smoke, freezing and impossibly strong.

"Asher!"

Before I could even ignite my palms, I was yanked off my feet.

I hit the stone floor with a bone-jarring thud, the wind knocked out of me.

Whatever had me didn't hesitate. With a violent, predatory tug, I was dragged backward at a blurring speed, my fingers scraping uselessly against the smooth obsidian floor.

"Ava!" Asher’s roar echoed through the corridor, his silver eyes flashing with a sudden, panicked ferocity.

I saw him lunge for me, his hand outstretched, but the shadows between us seemed to stitch themselves shut.

I was pulled through a narrow fissure in the wall that shouldn't have been there, my orange flames sputtering against the suffocating thickness of the abyss.

The cold wasn't just in the air; it was inside me, a living, biting frost that tried to extinguish the dying embers of my fire. I kicked out into the void, my orange flames sputtering against the oily thickness of the abyss.

"Get off me!" I screamed, my voice flat and hollow in the airless dark.

From the shifting walls, they emerged—Umbral Reapers.

They weren't solid, but their claws were.

They were made of the very essence of the Labyrinth, jagged and hungry.

One lunged, a blur of smoke and teeth, and I felt it before I saw it. A searing agony ripped across my thigh as its claws tore through my leather trousers and deep into the muscle.

I let out a strangled cry, my palms erupting in a frantic, desperate burst of crimson fire.

I tried to force magic into the healing runes woven through my leathers, but they barely responded. The wound ran far too deep.

It was going to scar—I could feel the jagged wrongness of it in my marrow.

The darkness began to press in, the edges of my vision fraying, until a sudden explosion of shadow shattered the silence.

"AVA!"

Asher didn't just arrive; he tore the realm apart to get to me. He was a storm of lethal, silver-eyed fury.

The Reapers didn't even try to fight him; they recoiled in absolute terror, hissing as his shadows touched them.

Under his touch, the beasts didn't just die—they dissolved, turning into harmless mist that fled back into the cracks of the stone.

He was on his knees beside me in a heartbeat, his face pale beneath the soot and blood.

"Stay with me, darling. Look at me!" he roared, his hands hovering over the gash.

He began chanting, his voice a low, frantic vibration as he tried to force magic into the healing runes woven through my leathers.

But the runes wouldn't take. The wound was too deep, too tainted by the Shadow Realm’s magic.

"Fuck!" he snarled, his eyes widening in a rare moment of sheer panic when the healing failed. "Fuck, it’s not closing!"

He stopped the spells, his breath hitching, and immediately pressed his bare hands directly over the wound.

He didn't have any cloth, didn't have anything to bind it—he just used the weight of his palms to try and force the blood to stay inside me. I cried out, my head falling back against the stone as the raw pressure sent a new wave of white-hot pain through my nervous system.

“Hold on, little flame,” Aether’s voice was a booming, desperate command in my mind. “Do not let the dark take you. Stay!”

I coughed, and the metallic tang of blood filled my mouth, spilling over my lips.

My lungs felt like they were collapsing under the crushing pressure of the Shadow Realm.

30... 29... 28...

The timer above the dome was a mocking, blood-red countdown. It was the most agonizing thirty seconds of my life. Every breath was a war, every heartbeat a jagged spike of pain.

"Ava, look at me!" Asher grabbed my face with one blood-slicked hand while keeping the other clamped on my leg, his fingers trembling, his silver eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic light.

"Don't you dare close your eyes. You fucking stay with me, do you hear? If you leave, I will take down this whole godsdamn realm. I will drown everything in darkness until there is nothing left.”

I looked into his eyes, and I knew he wasn't kidding. He would tear the stars from the sky if it meant keeping me here.

"I'm... here," I managed to whisper, my fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt.

3... 2... 1...

The warping began, the world stretching and screaming as the transport magic finally reclaimed us.

I felt the familiar, sickening pull, but this time, the darkness was already waiting for me.

My eyes drifted shut, Asher’s desperate face the last thing I saw before the void took me for real.

···

The warp spit us out into the blinding glare of the Arena’s medical bay. The transition was a violent sensory overload, the absolute silence of the Shadow Realm replaced by the deafening roar of thousands of spectators screaming our names.

I was still cradled in Asher’s arms, my fingers white-knuckled in the fabric of his shirt. He didn't wait for a stretcher; he simply started walking, a blood-stained, soot-covered force of destruction carving a path through the panicked officials and healers.

His jaw was set in a line of pure iron, his silver eyes fixed on the white tents ahead.

Through the bond, it was a secondary war.

Aether’s panic was a rhythmic, golden thrum of distress, his mental voice a jagged snarl. “Hold on, little flame. Stay. Do not fade!”

Beside him, Zya’s presence was a sharp, cold spike of protective fury, her usual composure shattered by the scent of my blood filling the air.

"Fuck me," I ground out through gritted teeth, my head falling back against Asher's shoulder as the gash on my thigh pulsed with a hot, rhythmic agony.

Asher looked down at me, his face a terrifying map of shadows, grime, and my own crimson blood. Despite the carnage, a wicked, predatory grin slashed across his lips. "I will, darling. Trust me."

He reached the primary healer's tent and kicked the flap aside, the shadows at his feet flaring out to shove anyone in his way. He lowered me onto a medical cot with a gentleness that didn't match the lethal light in his eyes.

"Stitch her. Now," he commanded, his voice a low, vibrating threat.

As the healers swarmed in, their hands glowing with pale blue mana, I saw Ember and Ezra stumbling into the tent. They looked like they’d crawled out of a sewer, drenched in a foul, brownish liquid that smelled like stagnant rot.

"Yeah, fuck... I smell like an earth troll," Ezra murmured, wiping a smear of the sludge from his forehead, his eyes wide as he took in the state of my leg.

Then, Zaria and Maddy appeared, weaving through the chaos. They were already in clean, normal clothes, their hair damp from the baths. They looked normal again, while I felt like a monster.

"Oh my gosh, Ava!" Maddy gasped, her eyes dropping to the jagged ruin of my thigh.

"You guys got eliminated?" I seethed, the pain making my voice sharp as the first magical needle pierced my skin.

“Yeah, fucking Jeremy and Sienna,” Zaria spat, her jaw tightening with a cold, simmering rage.
