The Sounds Grew Louder
A howl.
Hooves.
The flight of something
far too big to be a bird.
And still we walked towards it.
‘We can go back,’
Styx whispered to me.
But I shook my head.
As we kept walking
I saw it.
A waterfall of flames,
the bright orange strange
against the abyss of black
we had been walking through.
For a second
I thought we would jump,
but instead, Hades
took us right to the edge
and stopped.
Below us, the hot bright liquid
glittered like the sun.
And sputtered like death.
