138. Before I Could Speak
Before I Could Speak
I saw something move.
When I turned to look
at what it was, my body
turned entirely rigid.
At first glance it looked like
a strange rock on the hill,
but on closer inspection,
I realized that these
were the glittering scales
of not one but two serpents.
Terrifyingly large, they raised
their flat heads, split eyes
trained upon me and Hermes.
And then, slowly, they began
to glide their enormous
bodies down the hill
towards us, tongues flickering,
their massive fangs visible
even from this distance,
as Hermes waved to them.
