222. Demeter’s Home
Demeter’s Home
was close to Kore’s forest.
I once walked her golden fields
marvelling at each ripe,
golden stalk of wheat
shaped so perfectly.
Now it was barren,
the soil so acrid
it reminded me
of the Stygian Marsh,
where nothing could grow.
Her lodgings were in view.
A humble home, still beautiful.
White pillars and white walls.
A courtyard that once,
I imagine, bloomed with flowers.
Even now some crimson petals
lay frozen in the snow.
And there, sitting on the floor,
tears streaming down her face,
was dark-haired, golden-eyed
Demeter herself.
