Chapter 1 #2
“Yeah, we saw a part of her we’ve never seen before tonight, that’s for sure.
I mean we always knew she could fight but this beating was something different.
” Comanche shook his head. “Kinda makes me wonder where she learned those skills and why she had to learn them.” He sighed hard and reached for his phone.
“I better call Shay and tell him we’re on our way home. He’s probably out of his mind by now.”
“Or he will be when he sees his wife.” Chase shook his head. “Ty briefly had the upper hand for about a minute there.”
“Yeah well, I’m gonna let her explain that. Ty is a dead man walking if Shay ever finds out he mistreated her,” Comanche said as he tapped Shay’s number.
“What?” Shay growled. “You better tell me Kelly is all right or I’ll castrate you.”
“Hello to you too, Shay. She is fine,” Comanche hurried to assure the other man. “We found Char’s sister and both of them will be fine too.”
“Who the hell is Char?” Shay growled.
“A very old friend of your wife, one that goes back fifteen years,” Comanche told him.
Shay went silent for a few seconds then said, “You guys watch over them and make damn sure they get home alright. Is she really okay?”
“She will be Shay. Ole Ty never thought she’d fight back quite the way she did and he wasn’t the only one who was surprised at her moves. Your wife is a dangerous woman when she wants to be.”
“You’re only finding that out now? Where the hell have you been, kid?” Shay quipped. “You tell her that I looked Olivia and Victor Barron up. Tell her those two are going down. Very hard and very public.”
Comanche heard the rage in Shay’s voice and at that moment he wasn’t sure who was more dangerous, Kelly or Shay.
“I’ll tell her and we have more evidence you might want to look over.
Don’t worry, we’ll watch over them until we reach home.
We’ve always protected her even though we know she can take care of herself but we’re guys and we’ll never stop doing that, even if she doesn’t need it. We got her back now and always.”
Shay sighed over the phone. “That woman is my life. I’m gonna get Pappy in on this mission and we’re gonna declare war on the Barrons. It isn’t going to be pretty but we’re going to strip them clean then burn everything they think they own before this is over.”
Bringing The Girls Home...
Kelly sighed as she stared at Shay. “I am sorry it upset you. But once upon a time me and Char were like sisters. It might have been a while ago but I had to help her. When she disappeared, I didn’t know where she went or even if she was alive anymore.
That was just before my mom died. When we couldn’t find her again I was so lost then her mom died and no one knew the truth for a long time.
We only found out when the police looked through the papers still in the house.
That’s when we started to put together what happened the day she left.
” Kelly shook her head. “No one in the area knew that much about her mother’s family.
Hell, we didn’t even know their names yet, or where we could find them.
She was just gone and I missed her so much.
It was a year or so later when I found out.
I didn’t know it yet but Char’s mom had left some paperwork with my mom.
I think she knew her family was looking for her and why.
After my own mom died, I couldn’t go through her things yet.
It was too soon. First, losing Char then her mother, and finally my own mom.
I just couldn’t. It was only when I had no choice that I looked at the paperwork mom left for me.
She had all the paperwork from the things she had to do before I was born.
She left her diary and that’s when I finally learned about my dad, and about what her own parents had done to her.
It’s also when I found the paperwork Char’s mom left behind.
My heart was broken all over again, not for me but for Char and Rosie.
Her mother had left her story written in her own words.
I think I was too young to fully understand what she was saying but those words stayed with me.
Char’s mother lived through such cruelty.
It wasn’t until I lived on the street for a number of years that the horror of what Char’s grandmother was doing really hit me.
I never told anyone but I prayed that Char wouldn’t have to live that life.
I prayed that she and Rosie were safe and happy. ”
Shay just let her talk, thinking she needed to get it off her chest. And she did.
“Then last night, I got that phone call. It had an Iowa exchange and I knew who it was before I even picked it up. It was Char’s voice on the other end and when she told me what danger her sister was in and begged for my help I knew I had to go.
I left that note hoping and praying you would get home early. ”
Shay nodded. “I did. I think I got home just after you left.” He shrugged.
“I was worried about you though. Then since I couldn’t do anything to reverse any of it, I searched the names you left me.
The more I learned the more I began to worry.
Those two are vicious people and they don’t usually leave witnesses alive to tell their stories.
I worried all night until Comanche called me after your meeting with Ty Regis. I just wanted you home safe with me.”
“You aren’t mad that I brought the girls home with me?” she finally asked.
Shay shook his head. “No, I get it. They are welcome here. I think you did the right thing. But I’m afraid they will bear witness to the fallout that’s coming.”
Kelly smiled at him. “That’s not such a bad thing is it? It will give Char and Rosie closure they might not have seen before but closure is closure.”
Later in the evening..
In the front room, Pappy, Drew, Arik, Shay, Kelly and Char all sat at a table. They intended to discuss what the next steps would be to take down Char’s uncle and grandmother.
Dewey came into the room and walked over to the table. “Pappy, we have some... um... visitors.”
Stone looked up at his VP and asked, “What kind?”
Three other men came in after Dewey did.
“The legal kind,” Dewey replied with a sigh.
“The legal—”
“I am the District Attorney for Bexar County,” the man in the suit cut Pappy off. “We are here with a warrant to arrest Kelly Hines Montross.”
Shay shot up from the chair and stared at them. “For what?”
The man in the suit stood with two Federal Marshals. He motioned to one of them and ordered, “Show them the warrant.”
The Marshall stepped forward and handed Shay a piece of paper.
Staring down at it, Shay lost all the color in his face as he whispered, “Murder?”
“Yes, murder,” the man in the suit replied. “Cuff her.” He motioned to one of his Marshals.
“The fuck you will!” Shay growled as he moved forward.
The Marshals reached for their guns.
Pappy stepped over and grabbed Shay’s arm. “Son, don’t do it.”
Shay looked enraged, angrier than anyone had ever seen him before. “They cannot take her to jail!”
“We will get to the bottom of it,” Drew told him as he got on the other side and held his other arm. Both he and Pappy were ready to hold him back so they wouldn’t have gunfire breaking out in this room.
Shay kept shaking his head. “If you hurt her you will pay.” He seethed at the men.
Kelly could see how bad this was. One wrong move and some of them could die from a gunbattle.
These were the people she loved most in this world.
Her family, the one she’d longed for all these years.
“Please stay calm, Shay? Please?” She fought tears.
She could NOT cry now as it would only make it worse on Shay.
“I know you and Pappy will get me free. But it has to be legally.” Cautiously, she slowly stepped toward the Marshalls and turned around.
The agents carefully cuffed her with slow methodical movements as they quietly read her rights out to her.
The entire time, Shay never looked away from her steady gaze. His eyes blazed with a fury that really did make the District Attorney in the suit take a few steps back in fear.
Pappy and Drew kept a hold of Shay as his body looked ready to spring into action to defend his woman. They couldn’t allow this to escalate, they had to keep this contained. Only they didn’t know if they could.
Char wept aloud as she kept shaking her head and muttering softly, “T-this can’t be h-happening...”
Before the agents and Kelly turned away, Shay whispered to her, “I will always love you, woman. And I will free you, I promise.”
