Chapter 98

“Oh shit,” I mutter, looking at my phone.

“What?” Gideon asks, changing into workout clothes. Today’s our last day at Declan’s house. “Please tell me you’re not working,” he scolds.

“I’m not!” I throw a pillow at him. “I forgot I have a doctor’s appointment on Thursday.”

“Why do you look stressed?”

“It’s an appointment I made months ago. It’s a pre-conception consultation.”

“A what?” He shakes his head. “Cancel it.”

I take a deep breath. I’m curious to learn about what I should be doing and thinking about if …

“Baby.” G looks at me. “What are you thinking?”

“I want to do it.”

He buries his head in his hand, holding the posture for an uncomfortable amount of time before he says, “You know where I stand on this.”

“I do. This appointment is for me.”

He shakes his head. “If you want a baby …” He trails off, and I know what he’s saying. He’s never going to give me a baby.

“I don’t know.”

“I’m going to work out,” he says, and I get the urge to scream but push it down.

“My birth control,” I say before he leaves the room. “I have it scheduled to get replaced next month. What do you think of me just getting it removed and not replaced?”

“I can’t get you pregnant,” he says before leaving the room.

I put a pillow over my face and scream into it. At that moment, it fully sinks in. If I decide I want a baby, that would be the end of Gideon and me.
