Chapter 119
Istayed on the Gold Coast last night at a hotel not far from Declan’s. I cried myself to sleep as guilt consumed me. Declan’s kiss was life-changing. But now I’ve ruined everything. I was so wrapped up in myself. I didn’t even consider the fallout. I’m so fucking selfish.
At the hotel bar, I’m on my second Bloody Mary of the morning in an attempt to quiet my mind. I am the problem. The thought keeps replaying in my head. I don’t want to feel anymore. I don’t want to think anymore. I tap the bar for another round.
Then my phone lights up with Gideon’s name. My heart pounds. I don’t want to talk to him yet—I’m nowhere near ready. I’ve barely gathered my thoughts, but I can’t marry him. I liked my kiss way too much with Declan to marry G.
I need to be single. I need to figure myself out so I can stop hurting people. When multiple people in your life tell you to go to therapy, I guess you should do it.
I have to answer this call. It’s the mature thing to do.
“Hey,” I say somberly.
“Is this Dani Sommer?” an unfamiliar voice asks.
“Um, yeah?”
“This is Chicago Police Officer Anthony Reyes.”
My grip on the bar tightens, and then I black out, not from the alcohol, but from what the man says over the phone.
