22. Karolina
KAROLINA
York is gorgeous in the waning autumn sunlight. It gleams on the ancient city walls, making them shine with a golden glow.
Brandon holds my hand as we walk towards Bootham Bar for the first time since he whisked me away to our country estate to protect me from his enemies.
That’s all over now.
We’re starting our new lives together. Outwardly, we’re still Rand and Lena, but we’re our true selves with one another.
It’s a secret that bonds us, and I enjoy the fact that I’m the only one who gets to call him by his real name.
I’m every bit as possessive and unhinged as he is.
“What are you grinning about?” he asks, studying me with that slightly maniacal smile.
“I’m just happy,” I say, squeezing his fingers. “Happier than I’ve ever been.”
We’re walking past King’s Manor, where I’ll return to my MA studies next week. My department chair agreed to grant me an extension when Brandon’s private physician wrote a sick note for me.
He didn’t mention anything about my almost fatal stab wound. The prolonged illness he invented seemed to satisfy the administrators.
“Will you miss being a professor?” I ask Brandon.
He snorts. “Not in the slightest. That job prevented me from being with you. How can I possibly miss it?”
I consider him more seriously. “What do you want to do with your time when I return to my studies? I don’t want you to get bored.”
He lifts our intertwined hands and kisses my knuckles. “I could never get bored when I’m with you,” he says earnestly. “But I’ve been thinking I might teach piano lessons. I need to keep my skills sharp so I can play for my favorite ballerina.”
I beam at him. “I’m your only ballerina. And I think that’s a wonderful idea.”
The prospect of a musical career is so wholesome in comparison to his assassin past. It would be almost comical if I weren’t so relieved that he’s decided to pursue his passion again rather than enduring further pain.
I never want him to feel like he’s evil ever again.
“Lena?”
I whirl at the familiar voice. Amala is exiting the gates from King’s Manor, and she eyes me cautiously.
Her gaze flicks to my hand where it’s captured in Brandon’s.
“Professor Hirst,” she says, tense. “I wasn’t sure if you were still teaching.”
“I’m not,” he replies smoothly. “But Lena will be returning to class on Monday.”
His fake English accent is back. I have to smother a laugh. It’s not very convincing now that I know the truth.
“Where have you been?” Amala asks me. “I’ve been worried. You didn’t meet me at Brownie Bakehouse, and then you didn’t answer any of my texts. I haven’t seen you in months.”
My heart squeezes. I never meant to cause her distress.
“I’m sorry,” I apologize. “Someone stole my phone that day, and I lost your number. Then I got really sick, and I had to take time away from school. But I’m all better now.”
She glances at Brandon again. “That’s a relief. I’m glad you’re okay.”
“I never got a chance to explain myself,” I say quickly.
“I should’ve told you sooner, but Rand and I know each other from before our MA started.
I knew I shouldn’t be with my professor, so I tried to stay away.
” I look up at him with open devotion. “But I love him. I can’t live without him, and I don’t want to hide our relationship. ”
She considers us for a long moment, then finally asks Brandon, “So, you’re not our professor anymore?”
“No,” he confirms. “I didn’t want to cause more issues for Lena at the university. She deserves to finish her course.”
The tension eases from her face, and she offers me a genuine smile. “It’ll be good to have my study buddy back. I’m glad you’re feeling better. You look happy.”
“I am,” I assure her. “I’m up for a study session anytime. I have a lot of catching up to do.”
“That sounds great. Do you need my number again?”
“Yes, please.” I pull out my new phone, and she enters her contact details.
“Can we meet for cheesecake sometime?” I ask hopefully. “We never did get to compare our Tbrs.”
She grins. “That would be great. How about after class on Monday?”
“I’d love that.”
She checks the time on her phone. “I need to get to a meeting with my supervisor. On Monday, I’ll bring my e-reader to class, and we can head straight to the dessert bar for the afternoon. I’ll see you then?”
“Perfect,” I confirm. “Can’t wait.”
For the first time in years, I have a real friend.
I can hardly believe this is my life. I’m pursuing my academic goals, I’m forming a social network, and I have the love of my life at my side.
It’s surreal and wonderful.
Amala offers me a final wave and heads off in the opposite direction.
Brandon keeps my hand tethered to his and leads me into town. We make our way through the entrance to the city walls and down the street to York Minster. It shines rose gold as it reflects the setting sun.
We approach the stunning cathedral, and I allow myself to take it all in, to try to process that this is reality.
When we reach the ancient edifice, Brandon allows me several quiet minutes to simply study the ornately carved stone features of the historic building.
“It’s so beautiful,” I breathe.
His thumb brushes my palm. “Beautiful.”
His gaze is fixed on my face, not the Minster.
I flush with pleasure.
He’s beautiful, too. His reconstructed face is almost painfully perfect, but it’s his familiar eyes that will always captivate me.
My breath catches when he drops to one knee and pulls out a small box covered in navy velvet. He pops it open to reveal a sparkling round diamond ring set in platinum. The design is simple and classic, but the sheer size of the stone makes my jaw drop.
“Brandon…”
His eyes flash with quiet, desperate hunger as he drinks me in, memorizing every nuance of my expression.
“Karolina Taylor.” He uses my real name, and my heart flutters at the sound of it in his deep, rich voice.
“I’ve been in love with you since the moment I first saw you.
You are the reason for my existence. It’s only ever been you.
I swear I will love and protect you every day for the rest of our lives.
Will you do me the honor of being my wife? ”
“Yes!” I burst out, almost before he can finish the question.
I hold out my hand eagerly. That slightly crazed grin lights up his face as he slides the ring onto my finger.
He drops a kiss over the sign of our promise to one another. Soon, he’ll wear a ring, too. Everyone will know that he’s mine.
I grasp his shoulders and haul him to his feet so I can crush my lips to his. He’s still smiling against my mouth, delighted at my possessive hunger for him.
I kiss him deeply, claiming him publicly for all to see. I don’t care if they know I’m with my former professor. I’m proud to have him holding me.
He’ll be by my side forever. And in our bed. In our home.
My fiancé. My love. My reason for breathing.
I’ll never live without him again.
Even death won’t part us. Our souls are bound for eternity.
I can hardly wait to be his wife.
