Chapter 56

Familiar weight slammed into her shoulders as the resistance on her sword disappeared, white flame surrounding her and a pulse of her power shot out.

Flames scattered the ground, a century of suppressed power blasting out in all directions and she let herself relish the weight of her wings now splayed on her back.

She stood still, letting her body acclimate to the sudden surge of power throughout her body. She dug inside herself, her never ending well of power now accessible to her and every part of her glowed in a white flame.

She flared her wings, more creatures now landing a few yards from her and with a flick of her hand, white flames lashed out across the first line of creatures, incinerating them instantly.

In the face of her powers the Trenchers were at a great disadvantage. Her sword vibrated in her hand, a reminder of just how much power she truly had and she let out a long breath.

Xander landed next to her, his eyes wide in amazement and she watched him halt his approach.

“Stay behind me.” she smirked, hands gripping the hilt of her sword and pointing it towards the ground.

She started to walk casually towards the oncoming creatures, her sword’s tip dragging along the ground leaving a trail of white flame behind her. The flames twisted and grew, her power forming a large figure behind her that towered taller than the trees.

Seconds later, she let out a breath and glanced over her shoulder towards Xander, his body utterly still as he gazed at the fire-made wolf creature snarling behind her.

Fenrir.

Odin's greatest enemy, his soul trapped within her power and now summoned to help protect her people. His golden glowing eyes could be seen amidst the white flames forming his large body, his muzzle growling towards the creatures landing on the ground.

She smirked at Xander and stared straight ahead watching as the Trenchers slammed to the ground, bolting towards her with vicious screams.

Gripping her sword, she charged forward towards them and leaped in the air with her pearl white wings carrying her above. Fenrir pounced downward beneath her and both aimed for the first line of Trenchers incoming.

Both slammed into the ground next to each other, Fenrir’s mouth devouring half a dozen in one bite and ashes poured from his jaws. She lashed out another wave of power, creatures within a few yards of them dissolving in seconds.

Xander had finally joined her, his sword drawn and his eyes watching the next wave of Trenchers a few feet away. She nodded to him, adding her power to his weapon, and he gave her his rare smile before charging forward.

She and Fenrir followed, dozens of Trenchers ambushing them all at once and she let her sword swing. One of the creatures slashed its long iron claws towards her, barely missing her left wing and she instantly used her magic to make them disappear from her shoulders.

Diving to the right she sliced towards the enemy, fire shooting down her sword and killing it easily. Another darted at her from her left and she barely ducked before it almost cut through her neck.

Fenrir continued to slaughter over half the creatures around them, and she could hear them screaming as they died.

Xander was a few feet from her, cutting down a dozen of the Trenchers all on his own and she could see the raw power he himself had. Years of training and fighting were evident as he slaughtered each creature with ease.

A sudden yank to her bond startled her, her eyes darting in the direction of Kaden and she could see the creatures fleeing from her towards him.

“Go!” Xander yelled, seeing the same thing she was.

Bolting, she commanded Fenrir to stay with Xander while she made her way to her mate, that bond tugging more viciously by the second.

Summoning her wings, she launched into the air heading after the creatures, cutting a few down as she flew by them.

She could see Kaden alone, dead corpses littering the ground around him but being overrun by the ones still breathing.

She tucked her wings in, diving down towards the mass of creatures and a few yards above she splayed her wings out. Air caught them, halting her decent enough for her to lash her power out.

Flames spilled from her palm, fire spreading around Kaden and the creatures disintegrated close to him. His eyes looked up at her just before she slammed to the ground in front of him.

When she lifted her eyes to him, pure awe covered his face and she watched him study her wings behind her.

“I knew you could do it.” He breathed quietly.

She gave a quick smile before she sensed danger coming from behind, wings disappearing as she turned to block an incoming attack and then blasted her power towards it.

More were coming towards them, the sound of Fenrir still devouring the creatures could be heard and she knew Xander would be safe.

Kaden was quickly next to her, cutting through more creatures and she kept pace with him.

Seconds felt like hours as both kept killing every Trencher that came towards them, her power starting to get tired but not faltering as she kept Fenrir fueled and Kaden protected.

There were only a few dozen left, her arms aching and breathing ragged.

“Go check on Finnley and Boone.” She yelled towards Kaden, his head nodding before launching into the sky.

More Trenchers barreled towards her and she grabbed at her power, blasting a giant wave towards them and watched them burn to ash feet from her.

No more could be seen around her, and she launched into the air again to meet up with Xander. Her eyes caught him leaning against a building struggling for breath as Fenrir devoured the last few in sight.

“Are you hurt?” she yelled as she landed next to him.

“No.” he groaned.

They both stood trying to catch their breath, her sword pointing to Fenrir and his form dissolved back into her sword leaving no trace behind.

“Neat trick.” Xander chuckled.

“Wait till you see the others.” she smirked and headed towards the center of town to meet up with the others without another word.
