CHAPTER 25 #2
I understand how obsession becomes intimacy in him. Attention is the only language he learned without violence. The problem was never that he noticed.
The problem was believing noticing created ownership.
I move closer, pressing into his palm by choice.
His mouth covers mine.
The kiss deepens while his hand learns what the cameras never gave him. Response. Direction. The difference between observation and participation.
I touch him over his pants.
Rafe’s entire body goes still.
“Too much?” I ask.
“No.”
His answer is strained.
“Then why did you stop moving?”
“I am attempting not to embarrass myself.”
“You threatened an intermediary in a car this week.”
“That required less control.”
I open his belt.
Rafe watches my hands.
Every breath becomes visible now.
I slide my hand beneath the fabric and wrap my fingers around him.
He closes his eyes.
The reaction gives me a strange, fierce pleasure. This man rearranged parts of my life from a distance. Here, he has no distance and no ability to pretend my choices do not affect him.
I stroke him once.
His hand catches my wrist.
Not stopping.
Holding.
“Nora.”
“Yes?”
“If you want this to last, stop.”
“Is that a challenge?”
“No. A request made badly.”
I smile despite myself.
Then release him.
Rafe reaches for the nightstand.
“Condoms are in the lower drawer.”
I open it.
A sealed box sits inside.
I look at him.
“How long have these been here?”
“Before you entered the house.”
“That answer has dangerous possibilities.”
“I maintain supplies.”
“For whom?”
“No one has been in this bed since I bought it.”
The response is immediate.
Possessive satisfaction should not move through me.
It does.
I remove one packet and place it beside him.
“I want you inside me.”
Rafe looks at my face for a long moment.
“Say it again.”
“I want you.”
His hand moves between my thighs.
He finds the wet heat there, and the restraint in his expression nearly disappears.
“Rafe.”
“I need to know you’re ready.”
“I am.”
His fingers move once.
Pleasure catches me by surprise.
I grip his shoulder, then remember the injury and release it.
“Right side,” he says.
I take his uninjured shoulder instead.
He touches me slowly at first, learning the pressure that makes my hips move toward him. When he finds it, he does not change rhythm to prove skill. He stays.
The simplicity undoes me.
My forehead presses against his.
The room contracts to breath, fingers, and the sound of my name when he can no longer say it calmly.
The climax builds before I expect it.
I try to pull back from the intensity.
Rafe stops.
Immediately.
His hand remains still.
“Too much?”
“No.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
His gaze stays on mine.
“Do you want to continue?”
The question gives the sensation back to me.
“Yes.”
He begins again only after I move against his hand.
This time I do not retreat.
Pleasure breaks through me, sharp enough that I bury my face against his neck to contain the sound.
Rafe holds me without tightening.
Waits while my body shakes.
When I can breathe again, he kisses my forehead.
The tenderness is almost more frightening than the rest.
I reach for the condom.
“Now.”
He lets me roll it onto him because I want the act to remain partly in my hands.
Then he positions us on our sides, facing each other.
The angle protects my ribs and his shoulder.
It also leaves no place to hide.
Rafe pauses at my entrance.
“Nora.”
“Yes.”
“I need the word.”
“Yes.”
He enters slowly.
My body stretches around him, and the first pressure borders on pain. I place a hand against his chest.
Rafe stops.
“Wait.”
He waits.
No argument.
No movement.
His face is controlled, but the tendons in his neck show the cost.
I breathe until the discomfort changes.
Then move my hips.
“More.”
Rafe slides deeper.
The sensation fills me.
For several seconds, neither of us moves.
His forehead rests against mine.
I have never felt less observed.
He is looking directly at me, but the gaze does not take. It asks.
I move first.
Rafe follows.
The rhythm begins carefully, constrained by injuries and by the fact that both of us are learning a version of him that does not seize control simply because he can.
Care does not make the sex gentle.
His hand grips my hip. My nails mark his back. His mouth leaves another bruise at my shoulder after I ask.
Each time intensity increases, his eyes return to my face.
Each time I want more, I say it.
The words become easier.
Harder.
Again.
Don’t stop.
The final request breaks what remains of his restraint.
Rafe rolls me partly beneath him without placing weight on my ribs. His movements deepen, controlled only where injury requires. The sound he makes against my throat is raw enough to feel honest.
Pleasure rises again.
I hold the back of his neck.
“Look at me.”
He does.
The command enters him the way his orders once entered other people.
His eyes remain on mine when I come.
Rafe follows moments later, body tightening against me, my name leaving his mouth as though it has been torn from somewhere he kept locked.
Afterward, he does not collapse on top of me.
He disposes of the condom, checks my ribs, brings water, and returns only after asking whether I want him in the bed.
“Yes.”
He lies beside me.
The room is quiet.
No new threat arrives.
No phone rings.
For once, the world does not punish us immediately for touching.
I rest my head near his uninjured shoulder.
Rafe’s fingers move through my hair.
“Do not turn this into a security assessment,” I say.
“I was not.”
“What were you thinking?”
“That you are here.”
“Temporary fact.”
“Yes.”
His hand pauses.
I regret the sentence, though it is true.
“I don’t know what this means,” I say.
“It means what happened.”
“That sounds suspiciously healthy.”
“I dislike it.”
I smile against his chest.
The silence that follows is not empty.
It contains the suspension letter, my father’s fractured wrist, Tommaso’s countdown, and the archive Rafe still has not shown me.
I think he believes I have forgotten.
I have not.
“Rafe.”
“Yes.”
“Is there anything in the NQ file worse than what you already told me?”
His hand stops in my hair.
The answer exists before he speaks.
“Yes.”
My body becomes still.
“What?”
“Interventions you do not know about. Images. Records that were not necessary for protection.”
The warmth between us changes.
“When will you show me?”
“Now, if you ask.”
I look toward the dark hallway.
Tonight I chose the parts of him I wanted to touch.
The archive holds the parts he took without asking.
I am not ready to place them in the same hour.
“Tomorrow,” I say.
Rafe’s hand lowers from my hair.
“Tomorrow.”
“You will not delete anything.”
“No.”
“Or organize it to make yourself look better.”
“No.”
“The complete file.”
“Yes.”
I lift my head and look at him.
“Promise.”
His eyes remain on mine.
“I promise.”
I lie down again.
Rafe stays awake longer than I do.
I know because the last thing I feel before sleep is his hand resting beside mine on the mattress, close enough to touch and waiting for me to close the distance.
This time, I do not.
