CHAPTER 34

RAFE

The terminal goes dark three minutes before the plan allows it.

Mina triggered the outage.

That means Nora activated the split settlement.

It also means something forced her to move early.

I stand inside the maintenance corridor with Marcello’s mechanical key in one hand and my weapon in the other. Emergency lighting paints the concrete walls red. The reflective panel near the elevator shows part of the control-room door but not the people beyond it.

Voices.

Tommaso.

Pryce.

Nora.

I arrived through the old freight corridor nine minutes ago. Nico’s team holds west loading. Marcello’s men remain outside the north perimeter, visible and restless. Leo’s legal convoy waits beyond the main gate with the filing orders and federal receiver notice.

Graham is still missing.

The badge Marcello gave me opened the maintenance level, but two internal doors were already blocked from the other side. Tommaso has converted the terminal into a narrow path toward the control room.

He wants me to come this way.

Nora’s plan requires waiting until he removes the physical key from the protected console.

The waiting is worse than every wound I have received.

Tommaso’s voice passes through the door.

“Complete the report now or he dies.”

Pryce makes a sound.

Nora says no.

The lights fail.

My body moves before thought.

I stop after one step.

The threshold.

Active gun at direct range.

I may enter.

But the door remains closed, and I do not know Nora’s position.

Breaking it blindly could place her in the line of fire.

I press the transmitter once.

Signal to Nora: I am here.

No response.

Below us, gunfire begins near the west loading lanes.

Nico’s voice enters my earpiece.

“Private team moved first. We are contained, not advancing.”

“Hold position.”

“Tommaso’s men are crossing the main floor.”

“Do not pursue toward control.”

“Understood.”

A different channel opens.

Leo.

“The receiver filing is active. Mina has her half of the trigger. She needs Nora to complete the live authorization.”

“Location?”

“Control level. Signal moved toward elevator, then stopped.”

“She is still inside.”

“Yes.”

“What triggered the outage?”

“Mina cut terminal lighting after Nora activated her half. Emergency system remains. Evidence timer: eighty-seven seconds if no reconciliation occurs.”

Eighty-seven seconds.

If we wait, evidence releases.

If Tommaso completes the recovery first, he may regain control.

If I enter at the wrong angle, Nora dies.

I look at the reflective panel.

A shadow moves beneath the control-room door.

Someone near the threshold.

The door opens.

An armed guard emerges backward, looking into the room rather than the corridor.

I catch his wrist and pull him into the darkness.

He turns the weapon toward me.

I strike once beneath his jaw, take the gun, and lower him without allowing his skull to hit concrete.

Nora would notice.

The thought is absurd.

It guides me anyway.

The control-room door remains open three inches.

Tommaso says, “Move.”

I see Edward first.

Hands raised, face pale.

Tommaso stands behind him with the gun at his head.

Nora is beside the workstation, left shoe missing, her body angled toward the desk. Her eyes move toward the open door but do not reveal me.

She knows.

Tommaso directs them toward the elevator.

He holds the physical key in his left hand.

The plan says he must reach the freight-level console.

Nora must remain close enough to trigger the freeze.

I can take the shot now only through Edward.

Impossible.

I retreat into the corridor before Tommaso sees the guard.

The elevator opens.

They enter.

Nora is last.

As the doors close, her hand drops beside her thigh.

Two fingers.

Freight level.

Then she touches her thumb to her palm.

Wait.

The elevator descends.

Every instinct tells me to take the stairs and reach her first.

Her signal tells me to wait for the financial authorization.

I take the stairs.

Not to remove her.

To reach the maintenance exit beside the freight console.

The distinction matters only if I obey once I arrive.

Gunfire continues below.

Emergency lights reveal rows of freight containers, parked tractors, and security teams moving through partial cover. Regular workers gather near the east evacuation point, where Graham’s assistant is directing them toward an exit.

Graham may have prepared someone before being taken.

Good.

Nico reports three injuries, none critical.

Marcello’s north teams remain outside.

For now.

I reach the lower maintenance door.

Locked.

The mechanical key turns.

The door opens onto a narrow space behind the freight-control station.

Nora stands twenty yards away.

Tommaso holds Edward by the collar and keeps the weapon near his neck. Dean Mercer watches the loading lanes. Four more men form a perimeter.

Nora is beside the terminal console.

Her left shoe is in one hand.

The clip.

Her trigger.

She told me she would destroy it if compromised.

Tommaso inserts the physical key.

The console wakes.

Nora looks at the display.

“Two-minute offset,” she says.

He enters the altered time.

The settlement begins reconciliation.

My earpiece vibrates.

Mina: “Live window open. Nora must activate now.”

Nora presses her fingers into the shoe.

Nothing happens.

Again.

Tommaso notices.

“What is that?”

Nora throws the shoe beneath the console.

Dean moves toward it.

I have a clear shot at Dean.

Not Tommaso.

I fire.

Dean’s weapon falls as the bullet strikes his upper arm.

The freight floor erupts.

Tommaso drags Edward backward and points toward Nora.

One of his men fires at the maintenance opening.

I move behind steel.

Nora drops to the floor near the console.

Her trigger lies beneath it.

Tommaso shouts, “Get the device.”

A guard reaches for Nora.

She drives the heel of her hand into his throat and uses the console edge to rise.

He catches her coat.

She twists out of it.

The trigger remains on the floor.

I fire again, forcing the guard behind cover.

“Nora!”

She looks toward me.

I point to the console.

Finish.

Not come here.

The choice nearly breaks me.

She understands.

Nora turns back to the terminal.

The screen shows the physical authorization accepted.

The forty-two million begins moving.

Mina’s voice: “Thirty seconds to release. Freeze required now.”

Nora reaches beneath the console.

Tommaso sees.

He releases Edward and moves toward her.

I leave cover.

Two men fire.

One round strikes the steel beside my head. Another hits my right arm, passing through flesh above the elbow.

Pain arrives.

Movement remains.

I reach the loading lane.

Tommaso catches Nora by the back of the neck and pulls her upright.

My weapon centers on him.

He turns her between us.

“Nora,” he says against her ear, “tell him to lower it.”

She looks at me.

Blood darkens my sleeve.

Her face contains fear.

And instruction.

Wait.

Tommaso smiles.

“He will choose control eventually.”

Nora’s hand remains beneath the console.

Her fingers close around the trigger.

She presses.

Mina speaks through my earpiece.

“Freeze active. Evidence released.”

The terminal alarms change.

Financial lockout.

External receiver takeover.

Every screen on the freight floor displays the same notice.

FUNDS FROZEN — RECORDS PRESERVED

Tommaso sees it.

His face empties.

The takeover is over.

He presses the gun harder against Nora’s side.

“You think evidence saves you?”

“No,” she says. “It removes your options.”

Graham’s voice comes through the terminal speakers.

“Security teams, stand down. Tommaso Bellandi ordered Daniel Voss’s closure and falsified Aurelia records. Documentation has been distributed.”

He is alive.

Regular security officers hesitate.

Tommaso’s private men look toward the ceiling.

Nico uses the opening.

His team moves from west loading, disarming two guards before they can choose.

Marcello’s men enter from the north despite the agreement.

The floor becomes unstable.

Tommaso begins pulling Nora toward a row of containers.

I move parallel, weapon raised.

She remains between us.

“I’ll kill her,” he says.

“Yes,” I answer.

Nora’s eyes flash.

Tommaso expected denial.

I continue.

“And then every person here knows you have nothing left.”

His grip changes.

Not enough.

Nora stamps backward onto his foot.

He reacts.

Her elbow strikes his damaged wrist.

The gun shifts away from her body.

I have the shot.

Then a forklift alarm sounds between us.

One of Tommaso’s men drives the machine across the lane, blocking my view.

The container corridor swallows Nora and Tommaso.

I follow.

The threshold is active.

Immediate threat.

I can remove her.

If I reach her.
