T he walk of shame across the hall to my bedroom this morning wasn’t on my bingo card for today. But after the marathon of sex Hollander and I had in his bedroom last night, a bubble bath is calling my name—and Hollander’s, as he tags along behind me.
“There you two are.” Klaire steps around the corner, her arms crossed over her chest. “It’s almost noon, you know.” The smile on her face is so different from the sad look she wore when she left my bedroom last night.
“I’m sure they are well aware of how late it is, Klaire.” The Senator walks around the corner, looping his arm around Klaire’s waist and kissing her cheek. “We ordered some brunch for you. It’s in the living room. We have a very important press conference we need to get to.”
Hollander stiffens behind me. “Give us a few minutes to change, and we’ll be ready to go with you.”
Right, we’re still on a job, as undercover bodyguards for the Senator—how could I have forgotten?
All the sex that’s how. Hollander banged it right out of me.
I giggle at the thought as Klaire gives me a knowing wink. “It looks like someone went after what they wanted.”
“Actually,” the Senator begins, “the two of you are fired. You’re shit actors.
” Hollander opens his mouth to protest, only to have the Senator hold up his hand.
“But if it wasn’t for the two of you, Klaire and I would still be hiding our relationship.
” My eyes snap to Klaire, and I see the look of love shining in them as she gazes at the Senator.
“Klaire made me realize last night that she is more important than any official office, and that if I lose the election, I still have my law degree to fall back on. But if I lose her, life isn’t worth living.
We sent out a press release this morning, and we’ll make it official at the press conference. ”
Klaire holds up her left hand, displaying the giant diamond on her ring finger. “Matthew proposed to me this morning.” I launch myself into Klaire’s arms, hugging her tight. “You’ll be my maid of honor, won’t you?”
“Only if you’ll be mine.” I hold up my left hand, showing her my engagement ring, to her squeal of delight. Not only did I find the love of my life in Hollander, but I also found a best friend in Klaire.
