Chapter Twenty-Five

Madison

The morning sun bathed Madison”s kitchen in a warm, golden light. It streamed through the window, casting a soft glow on the countertops and appliances.

She stood at the stove, humming softly as she flipped bacon in a sizzling skillet. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the enticing scent of the food.

Madison”s heart swelled with contentment as she moved about the kitchen, feeling at peace for the first time in what seemed like years.

Her cheeks flushed a rosy hue as she thought about Kyle, who had become such an integral part of their lives in such a short time.

”Breakfast is ready!” Madison called out, setting plates piled high with eggs, bacon, and toast on the table.

Kyle entered the room, his arm draped over Ellie’s shoulder as he poked James in the side, making him laugh. Jack snuck out from the pantry and dashed over to Ellie and started tickling her. The situation quickly devolved from there into a war.

”Mom! Make him stop!” the little girl squealed, dissolving into giggles as James squirmed away and started attacking Kyle in return.

”Alright, you guys,” Madison laughed, waving them towards the table. ”Call a cease-fire. Time to eat.”

As they all settled around the breakfast table, the room filled with laughter and gentle teasing.

”Mom, can we go to the park today?” Jack asked.

”Sure, sweetheart,” Madison replied, smiling at the excited look on his face. She didn’t often have the time to take them to fun places and she missed it.

”Great idea,” Kyle chimed in, grinning conspiratorially at the children. ”Maybe I can teach you all some new basketball moves.”

”Like you could keep up with us, old man!” James retorted, sticking his tongue out at Kyle playfully.

”Old man?” Kyle feigned offense, placing a hand dramatically over his heart. ”I”ll have you know, young man, I”m still spry enough to outplay you any day!”

”Ooh, big words,” Madison teased Kyle, her eyes dancing with mirth. ”You sure you can back that up?”

”Of course,” Kyle replied confidently, putting a hand on her thigh under the table. ”Just you wait and see.”

Her cheeks heated at his double-entendre.

After breakfast, Madison began clearing the dishes while Kyle took charge of helping the children with their morning routine. He knelt beside James, patiently tying his shoelaces as he chattered away about his excitement for their upcoming trip to the park.

”Remember to double knot them, so they don”t come undone,” James instructed him, and Kyle chuckled, nodding in agreement.

”Of course, kiddo,” he replied, his strong hands expertly tying his shoes before moving on to Jack.

She knew Jack knew how to tie his own shoes, but he let Kyle do it without saying a word. As Kyle bent down to help him, Jack looked up at him with wide eyes filled with trust and admiration.

Kyle”s gentle smile and reassuring words showed just how much he cared for her kids, and it warmed Madison”s heart to see them bonding so effortlessly. She’d been kind of worried at first, especially with Ellie and James, but there hadn’t been any issues at all.

While Kyle moved on to attempt to braid Ellie’s hair, Madison allowed herself a moment to gaze out the window, her mind wandering to the incredible changes that had taken place in her life since Kyle entered it.

Kyle was like a miracle for her. She sighed and bit back a smile.

Madison”s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden crash from the other side of the room. She turned to see James grimacing as he held a broken plate, clearly having attempted to carry too many dishes to the sink.

”Were you trying to play frisbee?” Madison teased gently, crossing the room to help clean up the mess.

Kyle joined them, picking the shards from his hands. “Careful. Don’t want any war wounds.”

Together, they gathered the shattered pieces, the room echoing with the kids’ excited chatter. She took the dustpan to the trash and he left to wash his hands before disappearing into the living room.

”Hey, Maddy,” Kyle called from the other room, his voice laced with excitement. ”I”ve got a surprise for you.”

She heard shushing sounds and faint giggles coming from Ellie.

Curiosity piqued, Madison followed the sound of his voice. As she rounded the corner into the living room, she found Kyle grinning widely, a large wicker picnic basket in his hands.

Her eyes widened as she took in the array of her favorite foods nestled inside— savory sandwiches, fresh fruit, and even a bottle of sparkling cider. There were some things in there for the kids too. He’d thought of everything.

”I thought we could all use a little fun today, so I planned to show you all a spot I know. What do you think?”

”Kyle, this is amazing!” Madison exclaimed, her eyes shining with appreciation. ”The kids will absolutely love it. Thank you!”

As they gathered the children and loaded up the car, Madison couldn”t help but steal glances at Kyle, marveling at how seamlessly he”d become a part of their lives.

”Did you pack any dessert in that magical picnic basket of yours?” Madison asked as they drove, raising an eyebrow playfully.

”Maybe,” Kyle replied with an enigmatic grin. ”You”ll just have to wait and see, won”t you?”

”Ah, always keeping me on my toes, I see,” she said, feigning exasperation as laughter danced in her eyes.

”Of course,” Kyle winked. ”Wouldn”t want you to get bored.”

They spent the afternoon playing at a nearby river, Maddy watching from the blanket as she nursed Em. When they’d had enough of that, they went to the park down the road from her house.

It was the best day that she remembered having in years.

Later, they went back to Kyle’s with the children. As the daylight began to fade, they worked together in the kitchen, with Kyle following orders and starting the supper.

When he finished and put the pot on the stove, he washed his hands and snatched up a cooing Emmie from her seat nearby and started making faces at her. Madison grinned as Em’s chubby cheeks broke out into a huge smile.

It almost made her want to cry, seeing her baby interacting with Kyle like that when she’d never know her own father.

Kyle, leaning casually against the counter with Emmie cradled in his arms, watched Madison with an affectionate, slightly amused expression.

”You know, Maddy, if this whole rehab retreat thing doesn”t pan out, I think I’ve got a solid backup career as a chef,” he teased. “As long as you teach me everything you know.”

Madison shot him a playful glance. ”Flattery will get you nowhere, Kyle. Besides, I”ve seen you try to make toast. The world’s safer with you off kitchen duty.”

At that moment, Murdock lumbered in, his demeanor one of suspicion as he looked around. ”I smell food, but Maddy isn’t wearing an apron.”

Maddy smirked at Kyle before turning back to Murdock. “Kyle cooked.”

Murdock paused. “I’m out…just gonna go find a squirrel or something…”

“Wait, it won’t be a total disaster,” she assured. “I watched him the whole time.”

He still looked skeptical.

Wyatt entered with his usual flair, a cheeky grin plastered on his face. ”Speaking of disasters, I heard Murdock”s been voluntold to do the dishes tonight. That”s a horror show I”ve got to see.”

“Hey, I wasn’t briefed on that,” Murdock grunted and shot a threatening look toward Kyle.

John followed Wyatt in, chuckling. ”As long as Murdock”s cleaning skills are better than his tea party skills, we might just survive the experience.”

Murdock gritted his teeth, crossing his arms. ”You guys keep it up. Just remember, I know where each of you sleeps.”

Madison couldn”t help but laugh. ”Gentlemen, how about we focus on eating first? Murdock, you can critique the stew to your heart”s content.”

Kyle nodded, shifting Emmie to a more comfortable position. ”Maddy”s right. Let”s give our resident food critic the first taste.”

“That son of a bitch eats MREs and rodents by choice!” Wyatt jabbed. “He isn’t gonna know good food if it bites him on the ass.”

“You forget who saved your ass last night at Paddy’s when you were trying to cozy up to the wrong girl?” Murdock growled.

Wyatt held his hands up in surrender. “Fine, go ahead. But I’m not trusting your word on food.”

Murdock turned to Kyle. “If I’m being ordered to do the dishes, then I expect this stew to be nothing short of miraculous.”

Wyatt leaned in, a conspiratorial whisper to John. ”Ten bucks says he asks for seconds.”

John grinned, accepting the challenge. ”You”re on. But if he smiles, I”m doubling it.”

Once dinner was finished and the kids were occupied with drawing at the table with Aiden and John, Madison and Kyle settled on the porch, their bodies sinking into comfortable chairs as they admired the view.

The sky transformed into a canvas of deep blues and purples, the first stars beginning to twinkle above them. Crickets serenaded them from the shadows, and the evening breeze carried the sweet scent of honeysuckle.

“It’s getting cold at night now,” she mentioned, shivering.

Kyle patted his thigh and she moved over to his lap, where he wrapped her in his arms. She hummed and snuggled down into his solid warmth, wishing they had time to be together tonight.

”Thank you for today, Kyle,” Madison said softly, her gaze lingering on the horizon. ”It was wonderful.”

”Anything for you and the kids,” he replied, his voice low and sincere. He shifted in his chair, turning to face her. ”Madison, I hope you know how much I care about all of you.”

She looked at him, her eyes filled with gratitude and a vulnerability she hadn”t allowed herself to show before. ”I do, and it means more to me than I can say. I”ve been through so much, and trusting someone again hasn”t been easy. But with you... it feels natural, like it”s meant to be.”

Kyle reached for her hand, his fingers gently intertwining with hers. ”You”re incredibly strong, Madison. You”ve built a life for yourself and your children despite everything. I want to be there for you, to support you and protect you. If you”ll let me.”

Tears shimmered in her eyes, but she blinked them away. ”It’s hard, but…I trust you. Not just because of what you”ve done for us, but because of who you are.”

”You can trust me with anything, Maddy. I would never do anything to hurt you. I couldn’t. Let”s take this one step at a time,” he said softly, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. “I’ll prove it to you.”

As the evening wore on and it was time to return home, Kyle helped Madison gather the children, their sleepy faces illuminated by the soft glow of the porch light. The ride back was quiet, the kids dozing off in the backseat while Madison and Kyle talked.

When they arrived at Madison”s house, Kyle walked them to the door, his presence providing comfort and safety. As they stood on the doorstep, their eyes locked, and it felt as if an unspoken promise passed between them.

”Goodnight, Madison,” Kyle murmured, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face before he leaned in and brushed her lips with his.

”Goodnight, Kyle,” she whispered back against his lips.

He pulled her head into his chest and she wrapped her arms around his middle, listening to the steady thump of his heart.

“I love you,” he murmured, almost to himself. “I think I always have, even before I knew you.”

She smiled and touched his cheek. “I love you too.”
