Chapter Nine

Ω Bronx Ω

We ended up talking and just catching up until I drove her home. It was really late, and I didn’t feel comfortable letting her go home alone. But it was really nice.

I didn’t know how much I missed her until yesterday. She’s been texting me all day, but she said she was having a girl’s dinner tonight, and I wouldn’t hear from her until after.

It’s currently three in the morning, and I only have a couple of hours left on my shift, but I can’t sleep. She never texted me to let me know she got home safely. She probably forgot.

She’s probably safe all tucked in at her house. But my mind wonders. I go to the worst possible scenario. I blame my job for part of it. I see the worst possible scenarios all the time when I work. I know how bad things can get.

And if she forgot her wallet and no one knew who she was? Her dad wouldn’t know. I wouldn’t be called.

You wouldn’t be called anyway because you’re not her husband. You have no actual claim to her.

I groan and put my head in my hands. I could go work out, but I need to get some more sleep just in case we get called out.

I stare at the TV. I don’t even know what’s playing. I don’t even care. I just played it for background noise. Something to give me some peace from me staring at my phone. I would leave if I could.

I could call her dad. I smirk. Is that worth it? Yes. I’m doing it.

Before I have a chance to talk myself out of it, I call Mason. He’s off this shift, so he’s home. I’m about to wake him up and not care about it. I'm worried and he'll know where his daughter is. It only has the chance to ring twice before he answers.

“Crew Chief Knight,” he answers quickly.

“Hey, Chief Knight. This is Bronx Miller.” I’m regretting this already. He’s going to kill me.

“What do you need, Miller? It’s three in the morning.” Chief Knight sighs like he’s disappointed in me.

“I was just wanting to know if you happened to know where Blakely is?”

Silence fills the phone.

“Why are you calling me about my daughter?” he growls. “Especially at three in the morning.”

“I’m just wanting to know if you know where Blakely is. That’s all…”

I am not going to tell him that we spent all day together the other day.

“What do you mean where’s my daughter? What did you do to her?” I can hear him getting out of bed.

“I didn’t do anything to her.”

“She tells me everything. I know you two are hanging out again, but you still didn’t answer my question about what you mean by ‘where is my daughter’” Mason grunts.

His daughter is the one thing he really doesn’t play about. Mason mumbles something about how he can’t stand me.

I bite my lip. She wasted no time in telling him we’re hanging out again.

“What do you mean where is she? She should be at home. In bed.” Mason stomps down the stairs.

He mumbles more under his breath. All I can make out is “I can’t believe out of all the people…” And then nothing.

I thought they lived together.

“Doesn’t she live with you?” I ask.

“Stay out of my way. I’ll find her,” he snaps at me before hanging up.

I place my phone softly on the table in front of me. I don’t know what he’s going to do to me, but I’m definitely screwed.

“Did you just call Chief Knight?” Drew asks me out of nowhere.

I jump. How long has he been listening to me?

“You really know how to scare the crap out of someone,” I tell him. “But yes. Yes I did.”

“Why?” Drew comes to sit beside me at the table.

“I wanted to know where his daughter is.”

Drew starts laughing. I have to hit him to tell him to quiet down. “Dude. Shut up. It’s three in the morning.”

Drew is wheezing from laughing so hard. “You called Chief Knight at three in the morning to ask where his very hot daughter is. He’s going to kill you.”

I roll my eyes. “It’s not like that. I can’t exactly call her for a booty call while I’m on shift.”

“Yes, you can,” he tells me.

“No I can’t.”

Drew raises his eyebrow at me. “When’s the last time you got laid?” he questions.

“None of your business.” I cross my arms.

It’s been too long.

“You called our boss at three in the morning to ask about his very hot daughter. Knowing he makes our schedule, but surely doesn’t remember every single paramedic on call if they aren’t on his shift.

Do you see where I’m going with this?” Drew explains while he’s trying to stop his laughing.

He wipes fake tears away. “You’re insane. ” Drew leans back in his chair.

I rub the side of my face. “He’s going to kill me.” Mason knows who I am. He’s my boss.

He’s probably going to think I was trying to get ahold of Blakely this early in the morning for sex. Even if I tell him that I’m just worried about her. He wouldn’t believe me anyway.

“He’s going to kill you, and then make sure that all the ambulances are busy so we can’t save your life. Good luck in three hours when he has free reign to ring your neck.”

Drew slaps me on my back before heading back to bed. I should go with him. It’s late. I need to be on top of my game, but I’m not going to be able to go to sleep until I know she’s safe.
