Chapter Nineteen

It’s been back to back calls since the chest pain call earlier. I crack my neck and finally sit back down in the rig. We just dropped off another patient to the hospital.

Drew loves to drive, and today, I’m happy to let him. It gives me extra time to talk to Blakely.

“So. Now that we’re alone, tell me about you and Chief Knight's daughter.” Drew struggles to hold back the laugh.

“First. Chief Knight’s daughter has a name.” I roll my eyes.

“So, you want me to call her Blakely?” Drew makes kissy faces at me when we reach a red light. “I would be down for that.”

I growl and cross my arms. “No. You can call her my woman. Because that’s what she is.” I want to punch him.

“So, you asked her to be your girlfriend?” Drew questions me.

Crap. I never actually asked her to be my girlfriend, but she knows that’s what she is. She’s mine. I think I’ve more than proved that. Do I really need to make it that clear by asking her the question?

“You didn’t ask her to be your girlfriend?” Drew barks out a full belly laugh. “I can’t. You’re acting like you’re a gullible teenager who can’t tell his crush that you like her.”

I groan. “Do you really want to get on my bad side when we have to spend one more whole day together?” I ask him.

“Nope. But I can't help it. This whole thing is hysterical. You’re messing around with the Chief's daughter, but you didn't ask her to be your girlfriend. How can you look at me and not laugh at that?”

I know he has a point. I got too used to everyone just knowing she's mine. I have to actually put it into words now.

I lean my head back against the seat. “It’s ridiculous. We were friends in high school, and now I can’t seem to put it into words how much she means to me. How much she’s always meant to me.” I rub the side of my face. “Did I mention her dad hates me?”

Drew snorts. He pulls into the driveway to the station before turning to back in.

“I had no idea that her dad hates you. Wow. I can’t imagine how that one is going to go over.

” Drew’s’s words drip with sarcasm. “Does he have a reason to hate you, or is it just because he doesn’t want any of us near his daughter? ”

I smirk. “Ever since I met him when Blakely was helping me pass math in high school, he’s hated me. It’s probably just because of how I acted back then. Which… I don’t blame him.”

I didn’t like to settle down. I was never caught with the same girl twice.

“But you’re not in high school anymore,” Drew tells me. “You’re the PIC now. Don’t let him scare you into thinking that you’re a little kid. He might be your boss, but only while we’re on the clock. Don’t forget that.”

Drew says that like it’s easy. Mason Knight is not someone anyone wants to mess with. Drew gets out of the rig after shutting it off. I notice Blakely is walking up the drive holding her hand to her chest.

I get out of the car and meet her outside. “Blake?” She looks like she’s been crying. “What happened, butterfly?”

Blakely looks up at me with a pained smile. “I was getting in the car, but the wind blew, and it shut my hand in the door. I wanted my dad to look at it before I went back to your place.”

A sense of pride swells in me that she was going to head back to my house instead of hers. “I can get him. We just got back from a couple of back to back calls. Let me check you out.” I lead her to the back of the ambulance.

I place my hand gently on her lower back before I open the back door and lift her into the ambulance. “Take a seat on the gurney.”

Blakely looks at it before looking at me. “I can stand.”

I chuckle. “We clean it after every patient. Sit down, butterfly.”

Blakely nods and finally sits down. I’m not a doctor, but I can at least check it out to see if it’s broken or not.

“I’m scared.” Blakely is still cradling her hand to her chest.
