Chapter Twenty One

“Don’t even start with me about looking at Blakely's hand instead of Chief Knight.” I know Drew is going to bring up our little argument.
I wanted to help her. I want to be the one who she comes to when she’s hurt.
“You just wanted to be her knight in shining armor.” Drew taunts me.
We started working at the station together, so we know a lot about each other. Sadly, he has learned all my tells.
“I’m a paramedic. I don’t wear armor. That would make the job a lot harder than it already is.
” Drew laughs at my joke. “All jokes aside. I wanted to be the one to help her. She was fine. She just jammed her hand.” I’m counting down the hours till I’m able to go and check on her.
I don’t like that she got hurt, and I’m not there to take care of her.
“Chief Knight doesn’t like that you’re getting closer to his precious princess,” Drew tells me before laughing.
“Oh, he hates it. He has always hated it.”
I don’t blame him. He’s been the only one to take care of Blakely. She was left on his doorstep when she was only a few days old by her mother. They never heard from her mother again. He didn’t know about Blakely until the day she was left. All he knew was he’s her dad.
He’s used to being the only one who cares about her. He’s a man that doesn’t like change.
“I don’t care, though. It’s not about him…” She’s been my top priority for the longest time.
Drew backs into our spot at the station and turns to look at me. “Just be careful. He’s protective of her and highly liked in this town. He can make your life very miserable.” Drew hops out of the rig and leaves me to my thoughts.
Joke’s on Chief Knight. My life is miserable without Blakely in it. Chief Knight taps on my window and motions for me to get out of the rig.
I listen because I know I have to. “What happened with my daughter?” Chief Knight questions.
“I think you’d know more about what happened than I do. Wouldn’t she have told you?”
“I want to know it from your boss's perspective. Not her father’s.” Chief Knight glares down at me.
I smirk. “Come on, now. We both know you want it from her father’s perspective,” I tease him.
He cracks a small smile before wiping it off of his face. “Tell me.”
“I assessed her hand. There were no obvious breaks or fractures. There was slight swelling where I assume the door made an impact with her hand. I told her if the pain isn’t gone in a few days, that she would need to get checked out by a doctor, but she didn’t need to go to the ER,” I tell him.
If this isn’t what he wanted to hear, I don’t know what to tell him. Chief Knight crosses his arms and doesn’t say anything.
“All she told me was that she was going to get in her car when the wind picked up again, and it slammed into her hand. If you want more information, you’re going to have to ask Blakely. I didn’t have time to get the entire story before we had to go out on a call.”
Chief Knight nods. Does he approve of it? “I’ll go and check it out for myself.”
I snort. “I would expect nothing less. Princess Knight gets only the best, right?”
Chief Knight smirks. “The best is me. Not you. Thank you for checking on her hand. I got stuck on a phone call and didn’t know she was here.” Chief Knight walks off, leaving me standing outside of the rig like a total fool.
“Did he just tell you good job?” Drew asks.
Of course he’d listen to the entire conversation.
“No. But he did tell me thank you for checking on her hand. I heard that, right? Right?” I feel like I could’ve made that entire conversation up.
He’s never thanked me for anything.
“Oh, he definitely thanked you. Do you think Blak-” I growl low at him. “Do you think your girl said something to him?” Drew asks, smiling sheepishly at me.
“I don’t know. When would she have had the time? She left before we did.”
I saw her walk out. I tried to keep an eye on her for as long as I could to make sure she got to her car safely, but I wasn’t able to.
“She could’ve gone back in.” Drew grins at me. “It’s kind of cute that she wants to stand up for you.”
“I want to punch you when you talk about Blakely and say the word cute in the same sentence.”
Drew grins. “I’d complain to King Knight.” I chuckle at his new name for Chief Knight.
“He wouldn’t like you talking about his daughter like that either.”
Drew laughs and walks away from me. “Let’s see who’d win that battle!”
I would lose that battle. Just because of my interest in his daughter. I need to figure out a way to get Chief Knight to approve of me.
