STORM
Grandpa used to tell me...
"Every voyage begins with a question."
"The trick is surviving long enough to hear the answer."
No one looked away from Mariner's Crown.
She remained on the horizon.
Never changing course.
Never getting closer.
Never disappearing.
Waiting.
It somehow felt worse than if she'd been charging straight toward us.
Nathan finally turned away from the bridge windows.
His shoulders seemed older than they had an hour earlier.
He looked at me.
"I owe you the truth."
I swallowed.
"I've been waiting for it."
He nodded.
"I know."
He took off his cap and held it in both hands.
"When your grandfather disappeared..."
"...he wasn't fishing."
I stared at him.
"I know that much."
Nathan shook his head.
"No, Captain."
"You know where he was."
"You don't know why."
Ward quietly closed the bridge door.
Scott moved beside it without saying a word.
Not to keep anyone in.
To make sure no one interrupted.
Ben noticed.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
The SEALs had slipped into protective mode without anyone asking.
Nathan looked around the bridge.
Every face was waiting.
Even Frank and Rose stood silently together.
He drew a slow breath.
"James and I served together long before we owned boats."
Hazel frowned.
"Served?"
Nathan nodded.
"We weren't Navy."
"We weren't the Coast Guard."
"We worked for a government agency that officially didn't exist."
Silence.
Even the engines seemed quieter.
Willow blinked.
"What kind of agency?"
Nathan gave a weary smile.
"The kind that never puts your name in a history book."
I looked at Grandpa's bell.
At his logbook.
At the compass sitting on the chart table.
Pieces.
I'd been collecting pieces.
But they had never fit together.
Until now.
"You were intelligence."
Nathan met my eyes.
"Sometimes."
"Sometimes we recovered people."
"Sometimes we recovered information."
"And sometimes..."
His voice grew softer.
"...we recovered things that should never be found."
Ward's expression sharpened.
He knew that tone.
He'd heard it before.
Operations no one admitted existed.
Missions erased from official records.
History buried because it was easier than explaining it.
Ben folded his arms.
"What were you looking for?"
Nathan answered immediately.
"We weren't looking."
"We were hiding it."
The words settled over the bridge like heavy fog.
"What?"
I whispered.
Nathan looked at me.
"Twenty-two years ago..."
"...James helped hide something."
Hazel frowned.
"What?"
Nathan slowly shook his head.
"I still don't know."
"You hid something without knowing what it was?"
"We were told it could never fall into the wrong hands."
Scott couldn't help himself.
"So naturally..."
"...it did."
Nathan gave him a tired smile.
"Eventually."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"The compass."
Nathan nodded.
"It wasn't a keepsake."
"It was a marker."
My eyes dropped to the cracked brass compass lying on the chart table.
"The one in the floating case?"
"Yes."
Nathan stepped closer.
"James carried two."
"They matched."
"When aligned together..."
"...they pointed somewhere no ordinary chart could."
I stared at him.
"That's impossible."
"So did most of what we dealt with."
Ivy slowly lifted the cracked compass.
She turned it carefully beneath the bridge lights.
"There's something inside the glass."
Everyone gathered closer.
Ben accepted the compass.
His eyes narrowed.
"Not inside."
He gently wiped away years of salt residue with the edge of a clean cloth.
Tiny scratches appeared around the brass rim.
Perfectly spaced.
Deliberate.
Ward leaned closer.
"Those aren't scratches."
"No."
Ben's voice was quiet.
"They're coordinates."
The bridge went silent.
Nathan's eyes widened.
"I never saw those."
"They weren't visible before."
Ben continued cleaning the brass ring.
More tiny markings emerged.
Numbers.
Letters.
And one symbol.
A single silver star.
Nathan stared at it.
His face drained of color.
"No..."
Storm looked at him.
"What is it?"
Nathan's voice was barely audible.
"James never told me..."
"...he marked the first location."
"The first location of what?"
Nathan looked toward the distant silhouette of Mariner's Crown.
"The place where everything began."
Far across the Pacific...
Aboard Mariner's Crown...
The older man watched Sea Whisper through a bank of polished windows.
A younger crewman approached quietly.
"Sir..."
"They've opened the compass."
The older man's smile returned.
"Good."
"And if Nathan remembers?"
He looked out over the endless ocean.
"He won't."
The crewman hesitated.
"And if James wrote it down?"
For the first time...
The older man's smile disappeared.
He turned slowly.
"Find the logbook."
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
"But if you cannot bring me the book..."
He glanced toward the white yacht on the horizon.
"...bring me the captain."
The order hung in the air.
Cold.
Precise.
Unmistakable.
Storm Sinclair had just become far more than a witness.
She had become the key to a secret someone had been willing to kill for...twenty years ago.
