STORM
Grandpa always told me...
"A captain's first responsibility isn't the ship."
"...it's the people who trust you enough to step aboard."
I never forgot those words.
Right now...
They weighed heavier than ever.
The bridge had grown quiet again.
Beyond the windows...
Mariner's Crown remained on the horizon.
Never rushing.
Never leaving.
Simply watching.
Waiting.
Nathan stood beside Grandpa's bell.
Ben and Ward quietly monitored the radar.
Scott remained near the bridge door.
No one had to tell the SEALs what to do.
Protecting people was simply who they were.
I looked around the bridge.
At my sisters.
At Nathan.
Then...
At Frank and Rose.
A knot tightened in my chest.
"I'm sorry."
Every head turned toward me.
I tried to smile.
It didn't quite work.
"This isn't the voyage you paid for."
Rose blinked.
"What do you mean?"
I spread my hands helplessly.
"You booked sunsets."
"Dolphins."
"Quiet evenings under the stars."
"A relaxing anniversary cruise across the Pacific."
I glanced toward the distant ship following us.
"Instead..."
"...I've somehow turned your vacation into an international mystery."
For a heartbeat...
No one spoke.
Then...
Frank laughed.
Not a nervous laugh.
A genuine one.
Rose looked at him.
"What?"
He smiled at me.
"My dear..."
"When we booked this cruise..."
"...we hoped we'd see a whale."
Rose nodded.
"Maybe a pod of dolphins if we were lucky."
Frank grinned.
"Instead..."
"...we've got mysterious messages floating in waterproof cases..."
"...a legendary captain with secrets..."
"...former Navy SEALs quietly guarding every doorway..."
"...and someone following us across the Pacific."
He looked positively delighted.
"I have to admit..."
"...this is considerably more interesting than bingo."
Laughter rippled across the bridge.
Even Nathan chuckled.
Rose slipped her arm through Frank's.
"I've always wanted to go on one of those mystery weekends."
Storm frowned.
"The ones where everyone solves clues?"
Rose nodded enthusiastically.
"Exactly!"
"You spend the whole weekend trying to figure out who's lying..."
"...who's hiding secrets..."
"...and what really happened."
She looked around the bridge.
"I just didn't expect ours to happen on a yacht, for ten days. This is even better!"
Scott couldn't resist.
"Neither did we."
More laughter.
Hazel smiled for the first time in what felt like hours.
"I'm afraid this mystery doesn't come with actors."
Rose looked at Nathan.
"Oh, I don't know."
She smiled warmly.
"Our mysterious old sailor seems pretty convincing."
Nathan actually laughed.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"You should."
Frank nodded.
"You've certainly mastered the dramatic pause."
Nathan placed a hand over his heart.
"I've been practicing for twenty years."
Even Ben shook his head, smiling.
"I believe him."
Willow leaned against the chart table.
"You two really aren't frightened?"
Frank looked at Rose before answering.
"Of course we are."
Rose nodded.
"We're not foolish."
"We know someone out there has hurt people."
Her smile softened as she looked at Storm.
"But we also know something else."
Storm tilted her head.
"What's that?"
Rose reached over and gently squeezed my hand.
"We chose this voyage because of you."
I blinked.
"What?"
"We read every review."
Frank nodded.
"Every single one."
"They all said the same thing."
Storm felt her cheeks warm.
"They did?"
Frank smiled.
"They said Captain Storm Sinclair treats every passenger like family."
Rose squeezed her hand again.
"They were right."
A lump formed in my throat.
"I'm sorry your anniversary became..."
I searched for the right word.
"...this."
Rose smiled gently.
"My dear..."
"Our anniversary isn't about where we are."
She looked at Frank with the same love she'd shown him all week.
"It's about who we're with."
Frank kissed the top of her hand.
"Besides..."
He looked around the bridge.
"When we get home..."
"...who's going to believe this story?"
Hazel laughed.
"No one."
Frank nodded.
"Exactly."
"So we'll simply tell them the truth."
He pointed toward the horizon.
"We sailed into the middle of a mystery."
Rose grinned.
"And somehow..."
"...we ended up on the right side."
Silence settled again.
Not an uncomfortable silence.
A peaceful one.
For the first time since the floating message...
The bridge didn't feel filled with fear.
It felt filled with people who trusted one another.
Ben finally broke the silence.
"I already know how this voyage ends."
Everyone looked at him.
Storm smiled.
"You do?"
He nodded.
"I do."
"How?"
Ben looked around the bridge.
At the sisters.
At Frank and Rose.
At Nathan.
Then at Ward.
Finally...
His eyes settled on Storm.
"Everyone aboard Sea Whisper..."
"...goes home."
The smile slowly faded from his face as he looked toward the distant silhouette of Mariner's Crown.
"The people hunting your family..."
"...won't get another chance."
The words weren't spoken with anger.
Or bravado.
They were spoken with quiet certainty.
Ward met Ben's eyes and gave the smallest nod.
Scott folded his arms.
Nathan looked at the three men for a long moment.
Then, for the first time since stepping aboard Sea Whisper...
The weight he'd been carrying seemed just a little lighter.
Because after twenty years of standing watch alone...
James Sinclair's family no longer stood alone.
Neither did his secret.
And somewhere beyond the horizon...
A patient enemy continued to follow.
Unaware that the hunters aboard Sea Whisper had finally begun to hunt back.
