STORM

Grandpa used to tell me...

"The sea keeps her secrets..."

"...until someone asks the right question."

Tonight...

I thought we were finally asking them.

No one spoke for several moments.

The only sound inside the bridge was the quiet hum of electronics and the soft creak of Sea Whisper moving through the Pacific swells.

"Sea Maiden," I repeated.

"I've never heard Grandpa mention her."

Neither had Hazel.

Nor Willow.

Nor Ivy.

The four of us exchanged confused looks.

If Grandpa had owned another ship...

Why had he never told us?

Nathan slowly ran his fingertips across the edge of the chart table.

"She wasn't just another boat."

His voice carried a sadness that settled over the room.

"She was the finest vessel James ever captained."

Frank frowned.

"So... what happened to her?"

Nathan looked out the bridge windows.

"She disappeared."

Scott raised an eyebrow.

"Ships don't simply disappear."

Nathan looked at him.

"Most don't."

Ben leaned against the chart table.

"What kind of ship was she?"

"A research vessel."

That answer surprised everyone.

Hazel blinked.

"I thought Grandpa only chartered yachts."

Nathan smiled faintly.

"He did."

"After."

Storm frowned.

"After what?"

Nathan looked directly at me.

"After Sea Maiden."

Ward had been quietly studying Grandpa's logbook.

He hadn't said a word for several minutes.

Suddenly...

He stopped turning pages.

"Storm."

I looked over.

"What is it?"

He tapped a page near the back of the journal.

"These entries."

I walked beside him.

"So?"

"They change."

I frowned.

"They're still Grandpa's handwriting."

Ward nodded.

"They are."

"But not his language."

Ben stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

Ward pointed to several entries.

"Early in the journal..."

"...he writes like a captain."

He turned another page.

"'Clear skies.'"

"'Gentle swells.'"

"'Passengers enjoyed dolphins today.'"

Storm smiled.

"That's Grandpa."

Ward nodded.

"Then..."

"...about six weeks before he died..."

"...everything changes."

He pointed again.

"'North current stronger than expected.'"

"'Marker may have shifted.'"

"'Need another look before moon changes.'"

Ward looked around the bridge.

"That's not a charter captain."

Ben nodded slowly.

"That's someone conducting a search."

Nathan stared at the page.

"I never noticed."

Ward smiled faintly.

"You weren't looking for it."

Ivy reached for her camera.

"Wait."

She began scrolling through the photographs she'd taken of the logbook earlier that morning.

"I photographed every page."

Storm smiled.

"You photograph everything."

"I do."

A few seconds later...

She stopped.

"I've got something."

Everyone gathered around.

One photograph showed the inside back cover of the journal.

At first glance...

It looked empty.

Just worn brown leather.

Then Ivy enlarged the image.

A faint impression appeared.

Not ink.

Indented writing.

Something that had been written on a sheet of paper resting above the page.

The words had left pressure marks.

Hazel whispered,

"Can anyone read it?"

Ben accepted the camera.

He adjusted the brightness.

Then the contrast.

The faint grooves became clearer.

Not perfect.

But enough.

Ward leaned closer.

"What does it say?"

Ben read slowly.

"'Meet...'"

He paused.

"'...old friend...'"

Another line appeared.

"'...Sea Maiden...'"

Storm's pulse quickened.

There was one final line.

Almost impossible to make out.

Ben tilted the screen toward the light.

His eyes narrowed.

Then...

His expression changed.

"What?"

Storm asked.

Ben looked at Nathan.

"James wasn't meeting a person."

Nathan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Ben pointed to the final word.

"'Dock.'"

Silence.

Ben looked up.

"He wrote..."

Meet old friend. Sea Maiden Dock.

Nathan's face slowly drained of color.

"Oh, Lord..."

Storm looked at him.

"You know where that is."

Nathan nodded once.

"I prayed no one would ever say those words again."

Ward folded the chart closed.

"So where is it?"

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He walked to the bridge window.

Staring into the darkness beyond the bow.

When he finally spoke...

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"It isn't on any modern chart."

Storm frowned.

"How can a dock disappear?"

Nathan looked back at her.

"It didn't disappear."

"It was erased."

Miles away...

Aboard Mariner's Crown...

The silver-haired man stood over an antique nautical chart spread across his desk.

A crewman hurried into the room.

"Sir."

"They've started reading Sinclair's journal."

The older man smiled.

"I expected they would."

"They're asking about Sea Maiden."

For the first time...

A flicker of concern crossed the older man's face.

He slowly rolled up the chart.

"Then we're running out of time."

The crewman waited.

"What are your orders?"

The older man looked toward the dark Pacific.

His voice became cold.

"If they find the dock..."

"...they'll find what James hid."

He buttoned his coat and headed for the bridge.

"We cannot let Captain Storm Sinclair reach it first."

As Mariner's Crown quietly followed in the darkness...

The hunt entered a new phase.

For twenty years...

The enemy had searched for James Sinclair's secret.

Now...

James's granddaughter was following the trail he had left behind.

And for the first time...

She was one clue ahead of the people hunting her.
