Chapter Seventeen

I grip Selena’s panties in my hand as I stare out the window of my condo. Last night was different for me. When I sent Selena the message to meet up with me, my only intention was to give her the interview she wanted. However, one look at her and I had to have her again.

It’s a dangerous game I’m playing, but I can’t help myself. I can’t have her, but I fucking want her so badly. I can’t let anyone else have her either, which makes me a selfish prick, but I just can’t help myself. I don’t know what I’m going to do, and it's making me panic.

A knock at my front door sends me on high alert. I stuff her panties back into my pocket and reach for my Glock. Slowly, I pad to the front door and look through the peephole. Damon and Xavier are standing outside my door.

Opening the door, I put my gun in my waistband. “Ever heard of calling?” I ask.

They walk into my condo, and I can feel the tension coming off of them in waves. Something is wrong.

“We can’t call. Don’t use your phone,” Damon says. “I’ve got Lily at home with one of our guys stationed outside.”

Xavier glances around the living room. “We’ve got a big problem. Dad said the people after us have been following us. We need to get out of town and make a plan to take them down,” Xavier states firmly. “The detectives who questioned us are still following us and asking around town about us.”

“Wait, what are you guys talking about?” I need them to give me more details. “I gave the detective my alibi, but I figured that was enough.”

“The rival mafia organization after us has ties to that piece of shit from San Diego that we dealt with last year,” Damon offers. “They’ve sent information to the police. This is going to get bad if we don’t act now.”

“If we want out of the mafia, we have to finish this last job for Dad,” Xavier notes.

I feel anger roaring to life inside of me. We’ve worked so hard building Shadows and trying to step away from our duties with the mafia. It feels like this is never going to end.

“Ok, so what are we doing?” I ask.

“We need to leave now. It’s not safe for any of us here. Lily is coming, too.” Damon shakes his head, and I see the worry in his eyes. He would kill anyone who dared to touch Lily. We all would.

Suddenly, my mind flashes to Selena. I can’t leave her here if she could be at risk.

“I need to tell Selena,” I say.

Xavier curses, and Damon shakes his head.

“She knows about Shadows. If someone has been following me, then they have been following her, too.” Panic causes my head to ache.

“Is this serious?” Damon asks me.

Of course, he would be the only one to recognize true feelings. Shit, do I have real feelings for Selena? As badly as I want to fight them, they are there. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if anyone hurt her. I want her even though I know I shouldn’t.

“I don’t know,” I huff out. “I want her, but I also know that allowing her to get mixed up with us is dangerous,” I admit.

“Is she already mixed up with us?” Damon questions. “How many times have you seen her?”

I think for a moment. “She’s come to Shadows twice, and I’ve met up with her a few times after that.”

Xavier storms around the living room, pacing. “Fuck, why can’t you two think with anything other than your dicks? If we’ve been followed, then they have been following Selena, too.”

“Ok, then I have to warn her,” I shout.

Xavier goes to argue, but Damon cuts him off. “You have an hour to let her know and make a decision about what you are going to do. Meet us at the compound tonight.”

I know what I need to do, and it’s not going to be easy.
