2. Dax #2

“Wait, there’s more you haven’t told me?”

“You wanted to know about the house, right?” I asked.

“Alright, we have fifteen minutes left on the timer. Can you get it all out in that amount of time?”

“It’s pretty straightforward. I have a secret admirer who was tired of me ignoring him and decided this was the best way to make me give him my full attention.

Which, I might add, he absolutely has. Now my sole purpose in life is finding the best way to destroy him in every way possible,” I concluded.

“Damn, I haven’t heard you this upset since they called to tell you Devin was killed,” Harper said with a whistle. “So, this mystery guy is the one who blew up your house?”

“Yeah, and he did it as he was talking to me on the phone, knowing I was watching from the security cameras.”

“What an asshole!” Harper yelled.

“Couldn’t agree with you more. He also somehow managed to break into a safe in the house and steal my parents’ wedding rings and my mom’s locket Dad gave her when we were born. The cocksucker took the last things I have from my parents and left a note in its place,” I growled.

Wes didn’t even know about those. I’d told Harper about them after Devin called me, asking for Mom’s ring to propose with.

I told him over my dead body I’d give it to him for some two-bit whore he’d been dating for only a month.

Later on, I found out it was Kimber and felt even more justified in denying my brother the ring.

I’m sure our mother would have been rolling in her grave at that point.

I didn’t remember much of her or have any pictures left of her, having lost them at such a young age, but what I do remember was she was a pure soul and loved my brother and me.

My dad was even harder to remember, but what I do remember is the comforting timbre of his deep voice as he read to me before bed.

Then, it was all gone in an instant, leaving Devin and me to navigate the world on our own.

“How can we help?” Harper asked, her voice full of the same anger I felt.

“Let me talk to Magnus, and I’ll explain what I need done,” I answered just as the timer started to chime, letting me know our girl’s time was up.

“Hold on while I go get him,” Harper said as I heard her moving through wherever they were staying. “Hey, Mag, Dax wants to talk to you.”

“Hello?” Magnus answered.

Magnus was the oldest out of the triplets and their self-proclaimed leader, so if I were going to talk business, he was the man to speak to.

“Look, shit just got real, and Marco Tesoro made his first official move against me. I know he’s the one to make the hit on Harper that you turned down as well. ”

“So, you finally figured out who has a major hard-on for you, I see,” Magnus stated with a hint of snark.

The triplets and I have had a tug-of-war game going on about who’s the better criminal.

Let me tell you, it’s a close call. For him to know this information before me was a badge of honor for him to hold on to and a massive reason why he didn’t tell me back at the beach.

He was more than happy to make it work for himself, though, getting to keep Harper all to themselves.

“Yeah, it’s real cute of you to keep that kind of information to yourself,” I grumbled. “That isn’t why I needed to talk to you, though. I need a favor, or more specifically, I’m cashing one in. Jaxson said you owed me, and I’m going to collect it right away.”

“You have my undivided attention. What could be so bad you need to use up a sacred favor so quickly?” Magnus asked. If I didn’t know better, he might even sound a tad worried.

“Really, this affects us both. If I don’t get Marco out of the picture, then Harper won’t ever be safe. I know you guys are more than capable of keeping her alive and out of his hands, but at what cost to your business?”

“Get to the point, Dax. I already know we’ll say yes to the request. Something you mentioned to Jaxson earlier has him curious, and that isn’t easy to do,” Magnus pointed out.

I took a deep breath, knowing Harper wasn’t going to be happy about this, but for both our sakes, it needed to be done. “Ever smuggled a person out of Russia before?”

“Oh, Dax, this is why we’re friends. You always come up with the best sources of entertainment.” Magnus chuckled. “Tell me more.”

“I have a contact whose granddaughter is going to be sold off to the Mafia to cover debts her father racked up. She’s sixteen, and her grandfather wants her out of Russia and brought to the US.

Apparently, she’s been training with the KGB for infiltration, so you won’t have some scared, timid girl to deal with.

I still need to reach back out to my contact and get a picture, name, and location of where she’s at now,” I explained.

“Hmm, definitely sounds interesting. What does this contact have that you want?”

“Well, a tank, of course, because I’m not fucking around when it comes to destroying Marco,” I answered brightly.

Magnus laughed at that. “Damn, girl, you better make sure we’re in on this party.”

“Yeah, let me know if you still feel that way after you tell Harper you’re taking her to Russia,” I teased, knowing that wouldn’t go over well. “I’ll reach out when I get the details, but you need to leave right away to make this happen.”

“Send it the usual route, and we’ll pack our bags.”

I felt better knowing I had that matter settled. Now to call Levin and tell him the good news.
