15. Elena
ELENA
That absence of scent unsettled me more than anything Tank or Ash had said back at the office. Sergei's penthouse smelled like nothing at all, cedar and cold air and the faint metallic tang of glass.
Everything in it looked chosen and then left alone: a couch that seemed like no one had ever sat on it carelessly, a kitchen counter with nothing on it but a single glass turned upside down to dry, the whole place built like a man who never expected to explain himself to anyone who set foot inside it.
He set my bag by the door of a guest room with the kind of care he'd use handling evidence, and for a moment I thought he might simply leave me there.
"You'll sleep here," he said, flipping on a lamp I hadn't asked for.
"There's a lock on the inside, though nothing gets past the front door without my knowing first. Tank will have a car rotation on the block by midnight, unmarked, and if anyone approaches the building from the north entrance the system flags it before the doorman does. "
I stood in the doorway with my coat still buttoned, watching him recite it the way he might brief a room of analysts, flat and clipped, eyes fixed somewhere over my shoulder instead of on my face.
"Tomorrow we'll want to talk about whether you go into the office at all, or whether that's actually the safer play, since visibility cuts both ways when someone's already watching your apartment." He paused there, three sentences in, and the pause went on a beat too long.
"You don't have to do the whole briefing, the floor plan, the car rotation, the north entrance," I said. "I've sat through two weeks of your briefings, Sergei. I know how they go."
"This one matters more."
"They all mattered. You just usually remember to breathe between sentences, and you're not breathing right now."
Something crossed his face in that moment, something I had never once seen on him across a boardroom table or a desk stacked with numbers that could ruin a man's life.
It looked almost like nerves, there and gone in half a second, folded back beneath the flat competence he wore like a second skin before I could be sure I'd seen it at all.
I hadn't moved. Neither had he. The lamp light caught the line of his jaw, the place where he hadn't shaved since morning, and I thought about the photograph we had left face down on the table in the fishbowl, my own face looking back at me from a stranger's camera, and how the fear of it had curdled into something else entirely somewhere in the elevator ride up.
"Sergei."
"Elena."
Neither of us said anything after that. He crossed the room in four steps, and I met him in two, and whatever protocol he'd been building sentence by careful sentence collapsed the moment his hand found the side of my face, thumb along my cheekbone like he was checking I was still real.
"I told myself I wasn't going to do this," he said, low, more to himself than to me.
"You've been telling yourself that for two weeks."
"I know."
"So stop telling yourself."
I kissed him first, or maybe he did. The distinction dissolved the instant his mouth opened under mine.
His lips were warmer than I'd let myself imagine in all the quiet hours I'd spent refusing to.
He tasted faintly of the coffee he'd been drinking at the office and something darker, cleaner, purely him.
His hand slid from my face to the back of my neck, fingers threading into my hair, careful even now, as if he still thought I might pull away.
When I didn't, when I fisted my hand in the front of his shirt and dragged him closer, something in him finally let go of the leash he'd kept on himself since the night he caught me stealing his files and chose to protect me instead of ruining me.
The kiss deepened. His tongue stroked against mine, slow and deliberate, learning the shape of my mouth the way he learned everything else: thoroughly.
Heat unfurled low in my belly. My coat came off somewhere near the window, his fingers working the buttons with the same precise focus he brought to a contract.
His jacket followed, then the soft wool of his sweater.
Bare skin met bare skin at last, his chest hard and warm under my palms, the faint scatter of hair rasping lightly against my wrists.
I was aware of the city glittering below us through all that glass, indifferent and enormous, while inside the room shrank down to the space between his hands and my skin.
He unbuttoned my blouse slowly, watching his own fingers work like he wanted to remember the sequence.
Every so often he'd stop and press his mouth to whatever new place he'd uncovered, my collarbone, the hollow of my throat, the upper curve of my breast just above the lace of my bra, like he was making a map he intended to keep.
When the blouse slipped from my shoulders he paused, eyes dark, and reached behind me to unhook my bra.
The cool air kissed my nipples an instant before his mouth did.
He closed his lips around one peak and sucked gently, tongue circling, while his hand cupped the other breast, thumb brushing back and forth until the nipple hardened against his palm.
A soft sound escaped me. He answered with a low hum of approval against my skin and switched sides, giving the other breast the same slow, thorough attention until my knees felt unsteady.
"You don't have to be careful with me," I said, and my voice came out rougher than I meant it to.
"I know exactly what I have to be." He drew back enough to look at me, really look, the way he did in meetings when he was deciding whether to trust a number. "I've spent two weeks being careful. Tonight I just want to be honest."
I didn't have an answer for that except to draw him back down.
We moved toward the bed without any real decision behind it, shedding what was left of our clothes in pieces.
My skirt pooled at my feet, his trousers came off next.
When he stepped out of his boxer briefs his cock was already hard, thick and heavy against his stomach, the head flushed darker than the rest. I reached for him without thinking, wrapping my fingers around the hot length of him, feeling the smooth skin slide over the rigid core as I stroked once from base to tip.
He exhaled sharply through his nose and caught my wrist, not to stop me, only to steady himself.
He laid me back against the sheets, cool and unfamiliar and already smelling faintly of him, and followed me down with the weight of his whole attention.
His mouth found my throat first, unhurried, and worked lower in a slow line that left me arching up into him before I'd decided to.
One hand fisted in the sheet, the other buried itself in his hair, holding him exactly where I wanted him.
He was thorough about it, patient in a way that should have felt like torment and instead felt like being memorized.
The soft gasp when his teeth grazed my collarbone was answered a moment later in the same spot.
The catch in my breath when his palm slid up the inside of my thigh was met with a slower pass the second time, as if he wanted to be sure he'd gotten it right.
When his fingers finally slipped between my legs he found me already wet.
He parted my folds gently, stroking the slick heat of my pussy with the pad of one finger, drawing lazy, maddening circles over my clit that made my hips lift seeking more.
Every place he touched felt like the only place that had ever mattered.
By the time he pressed two fingers inside me, slow, deliberate, curling just enough to stroke the sensitive front wall, I had stopped keeping track of anything except the low, insistent ache building beneath his hand and the sound he made against my skin when he felt exactly how much he'd undone me.
"Sergei." His name came out half a plea, half a warning.
He lifted his head just enough to look at me, dark-eyed and wrecked, every trace of his usual composure stripped away. "Tell me what you need."
"It's you. Only you."
He kissed me like the words had cost him the last of his restraint.
I felt the broad head of his cock nudge against my entrance, hot and blunt, and then he was pushing inside, inch by careful inch, eyes locked on mine, watching every flicker of sensation cross my face.
The stretch was exquisite, a slow burn that made me dig my heels into the mattress and open wider for him.
When he was fully seated, buried to the hilt, neither of us moved.
We just breathed each other in, foreheads pressed together, his hand finding mine and lacing our fingers tight.
It was somewhere in that suspended moment, his thumb tracing the length of my arm to my open palm, that he stopped.
"What's this?" His thumb moved over the small raised line at the base of my palm, pale and thin, the kind of scar you forget you're carrying until someone else finds it.
"It's nothing. Just old."
"Tell me anyway." He didn't move to keep going. He stayed exactly there, propped over me, the thick pulse of his cock still buried deep inside me, waiting, like the answer actually mattered more than what came next.
"I was eight. My father let me help in the kitchen at Casa Marin on slow afternoons, and I wanted to prove I could dice like the line cooks did, fast, no looking.
" I laughed a little, remembering it. "The knife slipped on a wet cutting board and I caught myself instead of the tomato.
He wrapped my hand in a bar towel and told everyone in the kitchen I'd earned my stripes, like it was some kind of honor. I cried the whole walk home anyway."
Sergei brought my palm to his mouth and kissed the scar itself, slow and deliberate, and something in my chest turned over at the simple gravity of it, like he was pressing the story into memory rather than just my skin.
"Your father sounds like he knew how to make a wound feel like a badge."
