ELENA
The wind had picked up sometime after midnight, and I could hear it moving through the trees outside the penthouse, a low constant sound that made the rooms feel smaller, like the whole building was holding its breath along with us.
Ash and Tank had gone home hours ago, both of them talked out, both of them useless for anything further until morning, and Sergei and I had come back here because there was nothing left to build or refine or double-check, only the waiting itself, and it felt easier somewhere that smelled like him instead of like burnt coffee and cold metal desks.
I lay on my side facing the window, and Sergei lay behind me, not touching, both of us staring into the same darkness from different angles. Down the hall, the monitor sat black and silent on the desk where we had left it, no alert, no flag, nothing at all.
I had checked it twice already, walking barefoot across the cold floor each time and coming back to bed with nothing to report except the absence of anything to report, which was somehow its own kind of exhausting.
The sheets were cool where I had left them and warm where he still was, and I found myself measuring that boundary with my whole body, the way you measure a border you are deciding whether to cross.
"You're not asleep," Sergei said. It was not a question.
"Neither are you."
"No."
I turned over to face him. In the near dark I could make out the shape of his jaw, the line of his shoulder, the place where the sheet had slipped down.
He was watching me with the kind of stillness he wore when he was deciding how honest to be, a stillness I had learned to read over these last weeks and was still learning to trust instead of fear.
"I keep running the numbers," I said. "Wren's habits. How fast he moves on things he thinks are unwatched. I keep telling myself if he hasn't touched it by now, that means something, and then I remember it's been eleven hours, and eleven hours means nothing yet."
"It doesn't," Sergei agreed. "But you already knew that before you said it."
"I know." I let out a breath. "I just wanted to hear you tell me I wasn't wrong to think it."
"Your instinct is sound. Where you're wrong is thinking it will change anything tonight.
" He reached out then, not for my hand but for a piece of hair that had fallen across my cheek, and moved it back with two fingers, slow, deliberate, the kind of touch that asked for nothing.
"There is no version of tonight where checking that screen a third time tells you more than it told you the second. "
I almost laughed, quiet and short. "You've checked it three times."
"Four," he admitted, and there was no embarrassment in it, only the plain fact of it, offered the way he offered most things to me now, without armor. "I got up while you were in the bathroom. I didn't think you saw."
"I always see."
"I'm aware. It used to be a professional liability. It has since become something else."
"What is it now?"
He considered that longer than the question probably deserved, the way he considered most things I asked him when he actually meant to answer honestly instead of just quickly. "It's a comfort," he said finally. "I am not sure I have ever said that word about anything before you."
The wind pushed against the window again, and somewhere in the apartment a pipe ticked as it cooled.
I found that I did not want to talk about Wren anymore, did not want to talk about Renner or Mateo's case or the seven months my name had sat on someone's list before I ever knew it was there.
For the first time in longer than I could easily measure, I wanted only silence, or something that had nothing to do with strategy at all.
"Sergei."
"Mm."
"Come here."
He did not ask what I meant. He closed the space between us the way he did most things, without hesitation once the decision was made, and I felt the warmth of him along the length of my body, felt his hand settle at my waist with a weight that was more anchor than heat.
For a moment neither of us moved beyond that, just breathing in the dark, listening to the wind and the silence beneath it where the monitor waited.
There was no clock in that stillness, no version of this that had to end in a certain number of minutes so we could get back to the case, and I let myself notice how rare that was, how much of the last six months had been measured out in exactly those terms.
"I keep thinking about how we got here," I said against his shoulder. "Not tonight. All of it. If I trace it back far enough, somebody set the first domino falling before I ever met you, and I spent months hating that I never chose any of it."
"I have thought about that too," he said, quieter than I expected.
"More than I have told you. A version of me from a year ago would have called you a liability the moment your name surfaced in that folder, and closed the account, and never once looked back to ask what it cost. I have spent a great deal of this year unlearning what that version of me considered efficient. "
"And what about now?" he asked.
"I think about what's happening right now instead. And this I chose." I tipped my head back to look at him. "No one put me here. No one is making me want this."
Something shifted in his face, something that had been braced and was no longer bracing. He touched my cheek, and his thumb moved once along my cheekbone, unhurried, like a man committing something to memory he intended to keep.
"I have spent twenty-one years not saying things until I was certain of them," he said. "Certain enough that saying them could not be undone or walked back or used against me. I have never once regretted the waiting. I regret it now."
"Then don't wait."
"I love you." He said it plainly, without any of the careful architecture I had watched him build around harder truths in every conversation before this one, no qualifier, no strategy folded into it.
"I love you," I said, in the same breath, so close behind his words that I could not afterward have told anyone which of us had spoken first, and it did not matter, because for once neither of us needed credit for saying it, only the truth of having said it at all.
He kissed me then. Not carefully. Not like a man still testing the ground.
His mouth claimed mine with a hunger that had been held back all night, tongue stroking deep, and a low sound escaped him when I answered in kind.
I felt the last of the night's tension leave me in a long unraveling wave, replaced by something warmer and far more consuming.
His mouth left mine only long enough to travel down the side of my throat, open and wet, and I tipped my head back to give him more.
"You have no idea," he murmured against my skin, voice rough, "how long I've wanted to take my time with you like this. No clocks. No one waiting."
I answered with a soft moan as his teeth grazed the place just above my collarbone.
His hand found the hem of my shirt and this time he did not pause for permission.
He pulled it up and off in one smooth motion and tossed it aside.
Cool air touched my bare breasts for only a second before his hands covered them, warm and sure.
"Look at you," he said, almost to himself, thumbs brushing over my nipples until they peaked hard under his touch. "Perfect. Every time."
He lowered his mouth to one breast, closing over the peak and pulling slow and deliberate until my back arched off the bed.
A quiet, helpless sound left my throat. He gave the second breast that same unhurried care, tongue circling, teeth barely grazing, until I was breathing his name into the dark.
"Sergei… please."
"What do you mean, please?" His head came up, eyes dark on mine. "Tell me."
"I want your mouth. Everywhere."
A low, approving sound rumbled in his chest. He finished stripping me with unhurried efficiency, then his own clothes, until nothing remained between us.
When he settled between my thighs his cock was thick and heavy against my stomach, the head already slick.
I reached down and wrapped my fingers around him, stroking once, and he groaned into the curve of my neck.
"God, your hand," he said, "feels so fucking good."
He kissed his way down my body as if he had all the time in the world and intended to use every second of it.
Open-mouthed kisses along my ribs. The soft underside of one breast. The flat plane of my stomach.
When he finally settled between my legs he parted my thighs wider with gentle hands and simply looked for a moment.
"Beautiful," he said, voice low and reverent. "You're already so wet for me."
The first long, slow lick of his tongue along my pussy drew a sharp, broken moan from me. He took his time, tasting every fold, circling my clit without quite giving it the pressure I needed, until my hips were lifting off the bed.
"Sergei… don't tease."
"I'm not teasing." He pressed a soft kiss to the inside of my thigh. "I'm worshipping. There's a difference."
Then he closed his mouth over my clit and sucked, two fingers sliding deep inside me at the same time, and the combination broke a louder cry loose from my throat.
He worked me with patient, relentless focus, tongue and fingers in perfect rhythm, until I was moaning his name in a steady, helpless stream.
"That's it," he murmured against me. "Let me hear you. I want every sound."
When he finally rose over me again I was trembling. He braced himself on one forearm and guided the thick head of his cock to my entrance, rubbing it slowly through my wetness.
"Look at me," he said.
I did. He pushed inside in one long, measured thrust, filling me completely, and the stretch drew a deep, shared moan from both of us.
"Fuck," he breathed, forehead dropping to mine. "You take me so well. Every inch."
